Why is THE GOLD EXPERIENCE out of print? Why is TGE out of print? That CD is barely 10 years old! | |

Because P negotiated to get the master tapes back of this album. WB does not own the masters to strike new prints (at least, that was how it was explained to me). If it were ever to come into print again, it would have to be P doing it.

Whatever the reason its a darn shame. I just listened to this all the way through two days ago and it is one of my favorite Prince albums. Just some incredible stuff on this one. Always loved it. | |

I never heard of P getting ANY WB masters back. It's probably outta print cuz nobody bought it anymore, that's the only reason an album gets outta print. | |

Prince himself has stated that WB do not own The Gold Experience (When asked why TGE was OOP - "We own that one!"). Most likely he has always owned the masters for this album, and struck a deal with WB outside of his existing contract with regards it's release. The album cover features both WB and NPG Records logos, the only album to do so. The only other releases of his that have both NPG Records and another record label on the cover are Exodus - edel (distribution) Emancipation - EMI-Capitol (manufacturing and distribution) NPS - RCA/BMG (distribution) Rave un2 - BMG/Arista (distribution) TRC - Redline ("in association with") Musicology - Columbia (manufacturing and distribution as stated by press release) and of course TMBGITW single - Bellmark (distribution) - Prince's first foray into independent distribution of his music (and very successful at that) WB delayed the release of TGE for over a year - they originally had no intention of releasing it at all. This was the start of Prince's very public dispute with WB, who announced that he would tour the world and not return to USA until 1999 when his contract with WB expired. It was during this period that the "contractual obligation" albums were negotiated with WB for early release from his recording obligations - ie The Black Album and the Vault. The inclusion of the NPG Records logo on The Gold Experience would indicate that it's release was entirely independent of Princes existing contract with WB, and therefore WB did not in fact own the masters. Actually, the "p" in a circle, which indicates who possess a record's masters, says (p) 1995, Warner Bros Records, so @ the time or release, it belonged 2 WB, or maybe there is an error on the booklet... | |

Wasn't that Chaos & Disorder and The Vault? I thought Warner Bros. did release The Black Album against Prince's will. I could be wrong. | |
