We Are The World Incident

Can anyone tell me the story behind prince sucking a lollipop onstage during the 22nd AMA (which looks like mid 90's)??

I just downloaded the clip - crazy, what's the deal? I know the reasons behind not taking part in the original version, but why bother being up on stage, sucking a lollipop and refusing to sing it ten years later?

I know Asianbomb will try convincing me that the lollipop is a vagina and he was just doin his job, and hey, i'm open to that, but any other explanations??

I think he was just being pissy because he didn't want to take part in the big singalong at the end of the awards show, but (I think I remember reading this) Quincy Jones cajoled him onstage.

...and then stuck the mic in his face and got dissed by Prince.

I agree with Anxiety, and also that he probably didn't want to appear as a hypocrite.

First came Band Aid with 'Feed the World' where UK artists volonteered their time to record the song. Plenty of other artists didn't appear but they didn't get lambasted for not doing so.

Then that gave the Americans the idea to record a single, 'WE are the World' (so I guess that meant we should be feeding the Americans! biggrin ), I believe they all went off and recorded it after a Grammies ceremony, followed, ironically, by a slap-up banquet. And Prince got picked on because he didn't join in.

He recorded '4 the tears in your eyes' for the project though, and later he replied to the bad press he got with the song 'Hello' with the lyrics,

"I tried to tell them that I didn't want to sing
but I'd gladly write a song instead
They said 'OK' and everything was cool
'til a camera tried to get in my bed

We're against hungry children, our record stands tall
But there's just as much hunger here at home
We'll do what we can if y'all try 2 understand
A flower that has water will grow
And a child misunderstood will go"

No wonder Prince felt uncomfortable singing 'We Are The World', a song which had caused him much trouble, and Quincy Jones putting him on the spot didn't help. Like, if I'm in church for whatever reason, I won't sing the hymns because I don't believe in god and I refuse to be hypocritical - it would be easier to just go along with it but I'd rather be true to myself. So I can identify with Prince refusing to sing a song which although well intended, is hypocritical in that it comes from a bunch of mind-blowingly wealthy well-fed people.

By giving 4 The Tears In Your Eyes, he gave a piece of himself as opposed to singing in a community song. IMO, that's a far greater contribution and if those oafs where too self-centered to get it, SHAME ON THEM!!!!!

Everyone forgets that he also bought the first mile of Hands Across America, so he gave money to the cause, as well as a great song.

Before Band Aid, Willie Aid, We Are The World and all the other events, Prince was asking concert goers to bring canned foods to his concerts to help the homeless in each cities respective community.

I'm sure at the time MJ was buying a new nose, Lionel was buying Brenda boxing gloves and Q was getting his Peggy Lipton alimony money ready.

Susan Rogers said that "4 the Tears..." was a "Sunday" song, and the two of them had a Coke and some left over cold cuts. No banquet spread.

And I think that people dismissed the contribution to "Hands Across America" as a calculated move to make up for "missing" WATW. Some people just like to criticize!
