1981: Prince's obsession with Rockabilly

During that year he recorded a whole bunch of Rockabilly influenced tracks:
According to The Vault
guitar
Released:
Jack U Off
Delirious
Horny Toad

unreleased
Broken
There's Something I Like about Being Your Fool
Dance To The Beat
No Call U
Turn it Up
You're All I want(actually early 82)
guitar

He could have released a whole album if he wanted to.It seems he lost interest in that genre in 1982. cool

mmm..."turn it up" wasn't exactly rockabilly, compared to the other songs on the list.

Agreed, but the rest of the songs on those list pretty much fall in that category (at least the circulating ones). Courtin' Time is the only post-1981 rockabilly song I can think of off the top of my head (assuming I'm using the term 'rockabilly' correctly). What others are there?

nah, "courtin' time" was more of a big band/swing-type number...

Damn!! I hate being envious of anybody, but I break rules all the time. Where did you hear those unreleased tracks? Since they seem to be from 81-83, is there a way to hear them today? Did they come from a bootleg session, concert, squaredance, prom night show? What else have I been missing? eek mad

Wow, seems like you've missed these and a lot more gems. They were circulating with ease of finding before the RIAA started monitoring file transfers. Now you just have to come across someone with them...whistling

What about "Gotta Stop Messin About"? Or is it TOO new-wave to have a rockabilly twing?

no, "gotta stop" doesn't fall in the category of any of p's rockabilly output, either. seems to me that some of you aren't too familiar with rockabilly music...

Dez's book mentions that Prince was really impressed with the Stray Cats. That he even changed his hair after he seen them play. It's better told in the book but it's something to that effect.
