are you weighing this in terms of stuff owned, or knowledge retained, or concerts attended, or purple kool-aid consumed, or all of the above, or....???

i think this is a difficult thing to measure, if not impossible. i have a friend in new york who has maybe three prince CDs (other than stuff that's been copied for her), and i'd consider her a bigger prince fan than most of the people who run around in their moonwraps calling themselves "fams", just because hanging out with this friend of mine and seeing her enthusiasm and joy over the music - not how many shows she's been to or how much rare shit she has, but just how HAPPY the music makes her - i dunno, man - it's infectious and inspiring, moreso than a lot of the carrying on i see from lotsa other people.

How can that even be measured? Most of us only know each other by posts. I could tell ya who's most knowledgable or who has the best insights. I think for the most part the crazy fams are not here. They pop up every once in a while when the meds have worn off. But I have to say for the most part, we have Prince fans who are music lovers around here. I don't think anyone would proclaim that they are P's number one fan...as that seems a bit wierd to begin with...IMO.

i think you gotta just love music in general - prince ain't the end all and be all of music, though i have my moments when i think he's pretty close. i think a "real" fan is one who has used their love of prince's music as a stepping stone to explore other stuff and who realizes there aren't boundaries to what can be appreciated. prince says it best at all his concerts - "real music by real musicians" - anyone who can dig on that is a "true" fan, whatEVER it is that they like to groove to.
