Prince was better at playing/programming the drum machine back in the day....

Listen to his new stuff to his old stuff. The beats are just flat, uninspired, lacking rhythmical diversity.

Compare The Chocolate Invasion to the 1999 album. TCI is just WEAK in comparison.

What do y'all think? Personally, I'm in agreeance with me.

Prince was better at a lot of stuff back in the day

Show them my motto!

I'm trying to think of any artist who had the same edge, fire, etc. when he is in his 40s...as he did in his early 20's..

I totally understand if one wants to judge Prince on his past catalouge...but I think folks are using a standard that isn't applied to anyone else...

I just don't see it as being practical to compare Musicology to say...dirty mind. other then the fact that there is a 20 year time span...I don't see any artist who are held to the same standards 20 years apart....I think it's kind of a given that the raunchy, rude boy Prince of 1983 is not the same as the 40 year old Musician he is today

i think he just wanna change. so he is not using those kind of beats anymore, i mean, he did everything he could with the linn. but i agree he could work more on his beats, he should listne to trent reznor who is the new drum programmer king.

don't agree. his beats on this aren't as interesting as any of his work with the time or 1999 or purple rain onwards.

I've never heard "The Chocolate Invasion" but I can imagine. Everything changed with "Around The World In A Day" and in my opinion, for the worse. Everthing after it is OK but nothing says "Prince" like the old sound. I've been missing the "old Prince" since 1985.

I guess I'm numb to 1999 (except for dmsr) and the time (most of their actual beats really bore me) Now a beat like irrisitible bitch, housequake, or tambourine is really too cool, but I also like the beat to the studio days of wild, musicology (a chopped up edited live beat), and I find what do want me to do very nice to listen to.... but that little hiccup in Why should I do that when I can do this also draws me.

Does anyone actually prefer drum machine to a real kit / drummer? I don't think there's any comparison.

When I hear the drum machine, I always feel that Prince is trying too hard to be 'the guy who plays all the instruments'. Everyone knows he can do it, so why not use the band where the sound is much more layered and rich. Maybe it's something to do with royalty payments to the band?? smile

I like the live drums, but my favorite is the drum machines. Don't get me wrong, I love the way they sounded when Prince used to use them but I hate the way they sound when hip hop uses them. They just don't sound the same, the beat is too weak like a casio keyboard and the tempo is too slow.

I prefer the drum machine to live drum. Live drum are old fashion like Rolling Stone and Prince is new. I think you must be old person Levi.

He's also used the drum machine creatively in SOTT, but I get your point. Yeah... while I don't wanna say your creativity goes with age... Prince has definitely become more conservative with his programming in recent years. But just as I say that I remember "WHy should I do that" which shows its still in him... somewhere.... I think.... ???
Change it one more time..

That's funny cuz Irrisitble Bitch has been done with both live drums and Linn (although it sounds like the Linn is being triggered by live pads). But even on the studio version on B-Sides, he's using live drums but still has drum machine sounds layered on top (the clap).

I think that was part of Prince's genius was how he pushed the envelope on drum machines (playing them backwards, putting in effects on them) and mixing them with live drums.
FOr studio records I prefer the classic Prince Linn sound.

Just so you don't take him too seriously, HenrikLarsole is a "character" who comments with dumb posts - he's not for real, just look at his name.

AT LAST!!!Someone who says what I´ve been thinking 4 a long time.
Whenever I was dissapointed about a new album or song I asked myself:why???
Well,it isn´t always the song that´s no good but sometimes it´s just the SOUND,
the production and the chosen instruments.Imagine SOTT or Lovesexy with the sound
of NPS!!I got some downloads of the Parade tour-not his best,I know-but feel that bass,
the drums AND drummachine..a groove man.(AUTOMATIC)
The Parade album is full of different sounds and slow grooves but it never sounds dull.
Maybe Emancipation was 2 clinical but I´m glad that on Musicology He seems 2 be
using some of the older sounds again-What do U want...
Sure Prince will keeping on changing and we don´t want 20 PR or SOTT,
and Musicology has it´s own sound and it´s GOOD!
