Help! N.E.W.S., is it any good? Hi! Please help me...
I live in Finland and old Prince records are hard to get here. I only own D&P, Symbol and Musicology. Today I saw N.E.W.S. in a record store, but I don't know anything about it! What songs does it include, what kind of music it is, are there lots of guests on it and when was it made? If you can answer these I could maybe decide if I need to sacrifice the food money for this week.... I like: The Gold Experience---whole album. Purple Rain---whole album 1999---whole album. D&P---almost everything Lovesexy---Esp. Anna Stesia, Glam Slam, Lovesexy and Positivity Symbol---all of it, except The Max and The Flow Rave un 2 the joy fantastic---esp. The greatest romance ever sold, my favourite! Batdance, Electric chair and Thieves in the temple, haven't heard the whole Batman Paisley Park I don't like: The Rainbow Children The Vault Whatcha think? Sirah

If you don't enjoy the Rainbow Children you might not enjoy the CD NEWS.I would suggest opening up to the diverse Prince music catalog. Listen to TRC. for just the music quality. It is amazingly well put together and is a concept CD.

No need to pick up NEWS, it's really more of a trinket than an album, containing four 14 minute instrumentals, plenty of albums for you to pick up before this one. Based on your list I'd say the two surrest bets for you would be The Gold Experience and Sign o the Times. Diamonds and Pearls and the symbol album are basically in a similar style as the Gold Exp. and Musicology is a return to the bare boned music of Sign o the Times.
Avoid NEWS, doubt you'll like it.

I think he should have called it S.N.O.O.Z.E or N.O.O.S.E or S.P.E.W.S because it's utterly boring, directionless dross. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

N.E.W.S is a great jazz cd. It takes a few listens to really let the music catch up 2 u. But what really makes this whole cd great is the packaging. The package is like a compass. I think N.E.W.S, The Rainbow Children, and Come should be your only purchases if you really like Prince doing jazz. Nevertheless, this makes is a great buy..... Check me out and add me on:

Listen to it and find out.
Never trust Prince fans. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

I still haven't listened to that whole album yet.
When I got it, I hit listened to a little of track 1...pressed next...listened to a little of track 2...pressed next....listened to a little of track 3...pressed next...listened to a little of track 4...pressed stop. Then I started over from the beginning and scanned to the middle of track 1, listened a little, and continued this process through the rest of the album. Then I threw it on the shelf. I said "This is DEFINATELY one of those I am going to have to listen to over and over to appreciate." I keep meaning to put it on one day when I am in the mirror doing my hair getting ready to go to work. Or maybe put it in when I'm cleaning the house. Sometime I can let it play all the way through several times to get to know it. I can tolerate jazz but it takes me a LONG time to warm up to it. Andy is a four letter word.

Sirah Well I can tell you I love it and for me I listen too it alot. Most of the people around here aren't familiar with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Miles Davis and the like. Oh they know the names but they don't have the music and really can't and don't relate to it. You have to get NEWS knowing that Prince is not asking for you to like it. He is more or less doing an experimental Jazz CD that too me is one the best things released in 2003. However I am a musician so I know what I am listening to and for. Most other people were expecting something else or just keeping their collection current and therefore did not enjoy the CD. If you really enjoy music on a deeper level. I mean you take your time and just marinate in the music. N.E.W.S is an awesome display of music. Also it is one of the best lovemaking CD's Prince has ever made imo. Personally I put NEWS up there with the later Madhouse albums (to me very few albums come close to 8). My advice buy it and love it for what it is, great music. Peace THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

My suggestion next time you are going to take a long trip by car. Pop in NEWS. I find that is the best time for me to disect a CD. I listen to NEWS everytime I take a long trip and I tell you it just rocks in that enviorment. Peace THE CARDINAL HAS SPOKEN!!!

If you don't like The Vault or The Rainbow Children then your taste is obviously lacking. or just different from yours. i like the Vault and TRC. NEWS is just rubbish. I appreciate the level of playing on it, but the music goes nowhere. It's not as clever as it thinks it is. Showboating pretentious bollocks.

Thank you, everyone. I appreciate you taking time to answer. As I stated before, I do not have all the money in the world and my taste is usually pop, as well I am not a musician so I think I am going to skip N.E.W.S. this time. I might pick it up later when my financial situation is more stable and I want to add to my collection, but not this time
If you have any more comments I'd love to recieve them, if you have the names of the songs and more opinions about them, share, and if you just look at my likes-list and want to suggest an album, please do! Cream, Sirah

Regards Marrk. whatever, mate. Right the Wrong is not a brilliant song, but it's better than a lot of stuff he's done. As for NEWS, I don't rate it as highly as headhunters for example, but I think it's a well-executed piece of fusion. i'm not telling ANYONE to like it. I'm just saying that hey, I know a lot about music if i do say so myself, I've played it all my life and had a lot of training, etc, etc and yes, I'm being very arrogant by saying that you probably don't know shit if you think NEWS is crap. It's not brilliant, but it has some divine moments especially in eric leeds' playing (i say that as a sax player myself, hrmph, hrmph) though it is not comparable to the jazz greats, that's not the point. it's good music...better than a good 5-10% of Prince's crappier output.

Hmm...well, I decided to skip. I went into a record store, and that one had NEWS, Lovesexy, Dirty mind, For you and Emancipation. I ended up buying Lovesexy and For you, firstly because I like Lovesexy and am curious about For you, and secondly because both had stickers saying if I buy two stickered records I'll get them for 20 €. Good one!
And I'm not saying my music taste is good, at least to anyone's standards here. I also listen to Lenny Kravitz, Disney music and Backstreet Boys. I'm just a pop kind of girl. Sirah
