The Anti-Hit List http://www.eye.net/eye/is...c/ahl.html
8. PRINCE, "The United States of Division": As with much of the over-rated Musicology, this virtual B-side (available as a 99-cent download on Prince's website) is a warm, agreeably unambitious Sly & The Family Stone-inspired slab of funk. What distinguishes it is the contrast between its joyful groove and the earnestness of its message: liberty, justice and tolerance for all. That, and continuous love-making. If you re-hash something enough it will always be over-rated. I say. . .just sit back an enjoy it!! Don't analize it!!

But Rick James and Teena Marie are listed at #5.....

Musicology is as overrated in the press as his 90's albums are underrated. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

i often wonder just how many unessential lists we need from unessential media outlets.... something to ponder. there seems to be a plethora of this sort of thing this week. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

Especially TGE. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

I don't think that dismisses the list (though there may be other reasons). Like Musicology, Teena Marie's new album has been generally well-received.

In time, people will realise that The Rainbow Children is a much better album than Musicology.

It's a pretty funk jam, not his best but it's not terrible. You can bob your head to it and it's catchy. Keep the new music comin Prince! I can dig it! Blue

Interesting...everyone that I've played the song for (all of whom put up with my Prince obsession just barely) just LOVE this song. Every last one of them - 5 or so people in all. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Especially TGE. My friend, you have no idea how much I agree with you on this. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I feel the song is adamitly on FOCUS with what has 2 be... especially this part of it all... and continuous love-making... If everybody was making love 24/7 ... nobody would have time for thoughts to hurt each other. Such a simple thing "back to basics, yet majorly overlooked". GODBLISS SingMia

Musicology was not meant to be a classic album for hardcore fans. It was meant to capitalize on the 20th anniversary of PR, the RRHOF etc. and re-introduce him to the public.
Keeping that in mind, I think Musicology is a great album, albeit slightly rehashed and purposely engineered to appeal to the broadest spectrum of listeners. Unfortunately we hold our here to a standard that is impossible to live up to. Peace PS. If you take Pussy Control out, TGE is one of his best. Shh alone is quintessential Prince and worthy of immortalization.

I agree that on first listen the song seems to be about that, but after some deeper consideration it's clear the song is not about tolerance at all, it's about conversion ... unity will only come from adhering to the truth as Prince understands it... that's what the song is really about. It's still better than most of the crap out anyway. I like United States of Division.
