US of Division - Is that Wendy??

Hey,

Is that Wendy I hear singing on this track?

When they went on the Tavis Smiley show together, it was reported that they had
got together earlier that day or week and recorded a brand new song together.

Since this new song incorporates several Revolution-ish elements and sounds a
lot more off-center and less predictable than a lot of recent (pre-Musicology) songs
I figured it might be because this is the song he wrote and performed together
with Wendy.

Shame they don't give us more info on occasional downloads regarding who is
playing what instrument and who's on backing/co-lead vox

I thought the same things about Wendy.

I must say though that I think the chorus is corny. The musical arrangements are okay. I usually like Prince songs the more I hear them...but I don't think I'll change my mind about the chorus.

I think it's purposely corny-- the music blends this sort of late '60s "summer of love" groove with '70s funk and other "divisive" sounds. And then the lyrics-- "Everybody stop fighting/Everybody make love"-- highlight the fact that it's the same old message, yet despite its simplicity, there is a deep spiritual truth in there. But Prince can't keep his wit out of the game-- this track is winking at itself even as it drives its heartfelt message.

W&L could supply some really annoying background vocals, but they usually worked well in context.

these background vocals sound like annoyin-ass Candy. gawd, i can't stand her. it's even worse having her sing with him live. she really favored my side of the stage during the musicology show... and she's even worse when you have to look at her. all those corny-ass gestures and pantomiming to the music..... barf.

Prince's official site made a whoo-haaaw over the Tavis show.

This makes me thing, if Prince and Wendy were on a track that Prince thought was worthy of release through official routes, he would make it be known.

Makes me think, this ain't Wendy. neutral
