it is a very concepted album somewhat like rainbow children in that it all blends 2gether very musically well, what im really starting 2 dig thou is CHAOS AND DISORDER its beggining 2 sound like it now fits the time.how brilliant I WILL AND INTO THE LIGHT WORKS 2GETHER. SOUNDS LIKE HE DID ALL THIS STUFF 2GETHER ALSO AS A CONCEPT. NO AIR PLAY BUT I WILL ADMIT IT WAS A LITTLE AHEAD OF ITS TIME. OR US THE LISTERNERS WERE A LITTLE BEHIND. BUT ITS ACTUALLY A DAMN GOOD ALBUM. stickman

One of the best albums purely because it marked or should I say unmarked The Brother and society putting him into a pigeon-hole. Of course they tried to compare it to Sgt.Peppers. Why do they do that? It's like he has nothing better to do than copy off of the Beatles. His genius passes them by leaps and bounds. Watch out! Here comes the people getting mad at me. Anyway, the trip has been a fantastic one ever since. I'm glad I never left.

I agree. The album is great. The only song I don't like too much in there is "The ladder".Sounds too similar (but not as good as) the "Purple Rain" song and I was not a big fan of that one in the first place. But the album is great, all the same.

THis is one of those 3 or 4 very underrated Prince albums. I think the most underrated is Parade.
I think it had a difficult situation as the follow up to Purple Rain, no tour, and no video initially

ATWIAD is barely tolerable. Too much of a pop sound, though I do like hearing "Raspberry Beret" once every 8 years test

AROUNDTHEWORLDINADAY IS A GREAT ALBUM. It was such a change from Purple Rain and it may have hurt his commercial success at that time in the game. But it showed the world that Prince had the balls to take an incredible risk at the peak of his career @ that point. He showed he was an artist and a musician first. There wasn't an album like it at the that time or since. A part of me would like him 2 try 2 make an album like it 2day. Just wonder when CB 2 & RoadHouse Garden will see the light of day.

too much of a pop sound? The title track, Condition of the Heart, The Ladder, Pop Life hardly have a "pop sound". But I don't really like The Ladder. The version he did during this filmed soundcheck is amazing and beautiful, but can't stand the production on the album version. Ruins the song in my opinion. BTW, Lovesexy was the first record recorded at Paisley Park.

I like this album and believe it was overlooked. I don't know that P intended for all of these songs to be on one album but certainly "I Will" and "Into the Light" work together perfectly. As for ATWIAD-- great album. It's not as good as Parade which is what he was working up to but it was the necessary predecessor/aboutface from PR. Paisley Park, Condition of the Heart, America, Tambourine, and the Ladder are among my favorites. Paisley Park really touched me as it did some of you.

Weird to see this posted because I was listening to ATWIAD last night.....& I just could NOT get into it. 1st time that ever happened. It scared me! Then I put in Parade & all was well with the world again! I guess I prefer Parade to ATWIAD. Don't know when that happened. Oh's wells.

I appreciate it and used to love it less than I do now, but I was a little let down when it came out. It's very Beatles pop and not funky enough for me. Of course my standards were so high then for Prince it would be tough to meet my expectations. ______________________________________________

awesome...its great to hear all of us that love "Around the World in a Day". I get tired of hearing reviews of the album, saying it's things like "lackluster" and "a failed attempt at psychedelica." I think that every song on that album is tight as can be(even tamborine...the whole song is just percussion and bass and a few handclasps-plus at the time it reminded me of my favorite thing to do!)....anyway, I remember I first had it on cassette, and a friend and I were sitting in my room listening to it and when we turned the cassette to side B for the first time and "America" came on, our eyes got big as plates because we thought the stereo was eating the cassette! That was also the first clear, see through cassette I ever saw. Up until that point, I had only seen cassettes that were white or beige. "this is where the PURPLE PARTY PEOPLE be"

Around the World in a Day is ALL THAT!!! I love 'Condition of the Heart". 'Tamborine' is even better!! (damn Prince got skillz on the drums!) But my favorite on the album... is 'Raspberry Beret'. The violins, the cymbals, the cough, the whole-funk-meets-classical feel, the cloud suit, the fluid sound of the guitar.....shear brilliance! ~~If u had a chance 2 see the future, would u try?~~

Yeah!! Cloud suit! Cloud suit!
As you can see by my avatar, I have somewhat of a fascination with the cloud suit.

I loved the album when it first came out. Then I remember reading an article with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis critisizing the album for being too much like Purple Rain. They said that musically, the Ladder was a retread of Purle Rain and America was an alternate version of Baby I'm a Star. It's funny, but when I read that it sort of ruined what I thought was such an original album. So I put it away for a while and came back to it in 88 or so when I heard the brilliant live version of the Ladder that ends the documentary on Prince. But, it is a brilliant album, although SOTT is my favorite, and I think Parade is his most experimental. "I dare any man in here to look in his eyes and not feel...something."

I love the audio challenge presented by this album, one full of risks. I remember buying the vinyl on the first day of release and listening to it all the way through, confused and stunned....I love how it grows on you.
I still think Condition of the Heart is the most beautiful of all Prince ballads.

I'm glad to hear all your positive comments about AWTWIAD. The album is fantastic by itself and even better with the extended versions and the long b-sides found on the 12" singles. The extended versions of Pop Life (both UK and US are different), Paisley Park and America (endless and wonderful with that almost-hidden but great guitar solo) plus the long versions of Girl, Hello and She's Always in My Hair, add up to make this album a fantastic body of work. I love the cover art on the album and singles too. Life it ain't real funky unless you got that orgPop.

I agree that this album is fucking brilliant! I just recently rediscovered this overlooked gem. There haven't been many Prince albums that I've been into over the past several years. I've been hooked more on the outtakes, side projects like Madhouse, NPGMC and whatever current P album is out. But not too long ago I listened to this and it was the best it had ever been. It has a really bittersweet and vibrant feel that's hard to describe but the song "Tangerine" fits the same description exactly. I think this is one of Prince's more overlooked/underrated works up there with Controversy, Batman and Come. Hopefully revisionism will be kinder to this album- it deserves all the praise we're giving it here. Plus, it doesn't have that overly familiar feeling that some of his albums get with time. "Paisley Park" at the soundcheck was a dream come true.

ATWIAD is a killer album. I love Paisley Park and The Ladder. It's a shame it doesn't get the credit it deserves. My favorite Prince album is Parade. It didn't get the greatest reviews either but I love the sound. I guess the Revolution really were a positive addition to Prince's "family" One day they'll get their dues.

When I first hrd this album when it came out I said, this brother is out there!
The opening is crazy incredible In the words of Miles Davis, the sign of a great musician is the ability to stretch , and Prince can definitely stretch.
