Consider This: SOTT

Ok...imagine this...

Take the track listing for Sign O' The Times...Got it? Good...

Now...instead of "Play In The Sunshine", replace it with "Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance"...

And instead of "Slow Love", replace it with "Call My Name"...

Does SOTT become a better album, a worse one, or does the level of quality remain the same in your eyes??

(Oh, and Supernova is not allowed to answer with the ol' "apples and oranges" retort..lol mr.green )

Play in the Sunshine is one of the highlites of SOTT in my opinion. In fact, I think it's one of the peaks of Prince's career as a recording musician. It's one of the greatest displays of Prince's talent ever captured in the studio. ICPC is a relatively decent track by Prince's recent standards, but in no way does it represent an improvement on Play...

Call My Name for Slow Love??? Meh...I'm not terribly keen on either of them. I think Slow Love is one of the few dead spots on SOTT, but I don't really consider Call My Name much of an improvement.

I love all four of these tracks. But Slow Love edges out Call My Name, imo. I really, really like that track (I think it's a highlight of SOTT unlike what many others think). I also love ICPC, it's a great track- but again, doesn't quite match up to the level of genius that is Play in the Sunshine (I'm being serious). Like someone else said, I think that's one of his peaks in studio recording.

SOTT was a work of genius in its time - Musicology is far less groundbreaking. 2 slightly weaker tracks inevitably slightly weaken the album. It's better off how it was originally done, without the two tracks.

But it IS apples and oranges. One is now considered a classic, with over 15 years of hindsight , the other is a new expirience that doesnt have that benefit.Who can say how "Musicology" will be considered in 15 years time?

Read again, amigo...I wasn't asking you to compare the two albums....I was merely asking you to imagine listening to the tracks on SOTT for the first time, and imagining hearing ICPC in place of Play In The Sunshine...and Call My Name instead of Slow Love. Would SOTT sound/feel more R&B-funk oriented with those two replacements??...Would the vibe of the album sound perhaps a little darker??...Would those two songs possibly make the overall experience a better one?? Worse?? More or less the same??

I get it . I guess it would sound awkward to me.When I listen to Prince (or mix CDs of him),I tend to keep things to their respective eras.

Imagine this!

Take Lovesexy...but...

Instead of Positivity, have Scandalous

Then instead of I know, have Lemon Crush

Then Instead of Glam Slam, have Trust

Take off Alphabet St, and replace it with Batdance!

Now swap Annastasia, and try Electric Chair.

I wish you heaven makes way for The Future

Lovesexy clears the decks for Vicki Waiting.

Replace When two are in love with Arms of Orion.

Finally, swap Dance On with Party man.

What do you think, would it work as an album?????

"Play in the Sunshine" is irreplaceable IMO. "Call My Name for "Slow Love" would be an OK exchange. I think the level of quality for SOTT would remain the same.

ICP&C is definitely a better choice than Play in the Sunshine (which I can't stand mad ) BUT I think Slow Love fits perfectly on SOTT. Call My Name feels like a different album, and you've already got Adore on there - no sense trying to compete w/ that classic. Slow Love is nice but it knows its place on the album, so to speak lol Call My Name holds weight to me & would try to compete as THE killer ballad of the album.

Now that I'm done explaining "battle of the songs" nuts I think ICP&C would fit fine, but not Call My Name. And yes, the addition of ICP&C would have made SOTT a notch better in my eyes b/c I wouldn't have to hit skip for a change. smile
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Leave it as is. If you're making a CD-R based on favorites/themes/eras and you move them around, that's one thing. It was sequenced as an album that way for a reason.

It just wouldn't fit with those two in there. That would make it worse. Nothing against ICP&C or Call My Name, I like these tracks-just on Musicology.

SquirrelMeat has got the best reply so far though. lol

Sequence it as one track, put Bruce Wayne naked on the cover and call it-

Batsexy. batman yes

It'd be weaker. "Play" is the perfect antidote for the title track; without the juxtaposition of those two tracks, the intentional messiness, and the all-over-the-map-ness, of the tracklist gets lost. Replacing the extreme dispair-extreme joy relationship with extreme despair-cute but funky weirdness (or whatever) wouldn't work.

And I enjoy "Slow Love" and "Call My Name" about equally, I guess. That change would probably make the overall album more 90s-style R&B-oriented, but some of the diversity of the overall package would get lost, since "Call My Name" is almost an "Adore" rewrite, nor does it sport the same 50s soul-ish horns that "Slow Love" does.

Ewwwww

ICPC is one of the worst Prince songs in recent years IMO.

Saying it could replace Play In The Sunshine?? Sir, I challenge thee to a duel *slap, slap* biggrin

And as much as I am indifferent to the insipid 'Slow Love', it's at least better than Call My Name.
