Will Prince Win a Grammy 4 Musicology?

So, what do you think Prince's chances are of winning a Grammy this coming year? I think he's going to get at least one of the little gramaphone trophies smile

Just think, he was nominated for a Grammy for N.E.W.S but didn't win. This time, he has the Sony machine behind him, so he's guaranteed to get a couple of nominations in traditional R&B categories. wink cool

Doubtful that he'd win anything. Nominated? Sure, but winning's another thing altogether. This has been a banner year for industry veterans (I'm thinking of Prince and Loretta Lynn, specifically), so who knows?

I do know this; many of the greats in cinema and music have a near-empty mantle over their fireplace. Hitchcock and Altman never won on Oscar. Beach Boys, Patsy Cline, The Supremes, Bob Marley, Little Richard and many others have never won Grammys. I know Prince has won a few, but they seem almost incidental and hardly reflective of his best work.

If the grammies are given to most popular artists, he stands a chance. biggrin

If grammies are given to the best of the available music, he won't even get nominated. neutral

I could see Musicology getting nominated in a few categories. Whether it would win or not, I don't know. He's brought out lot stronger albums that have gone by unrewarded but a lot of people seem to like Musicology, so who knows? Perhaps it is just middle-of-the-road enough for the judges!

More likely, I think next year he will be offered lots of 'lifetime achievement' awards, whether he turns upto accept them or not is another matter...

I think he'll be nominated in the traditional R&B categories. He won't get a nomination in the Urban R&B category, where Usher, Justin Timberlake et al. compete...but I can see Prince in a traditional R&B category, where say, Luther Vandross would be nominated. cool

Very interesting...if he gets a 3rd single out that does fairly well i think he will b nominated. Now will the academy vote 4 P and give him a grammy bcuz they owe him 1 4 D&P bcuz they f'ed up that year 4sho by not givin P 1. I hope so but i'm not going 2 hold my breath!

I follow the Grammys and Oscars closely as a hobby...

Don't want to jinx it, but Prince would be a perfect candidate for following in the recent Grammy footsteps of Santana, Springsteen, Dylan, etc.

The ingredients are there for him to be the artist who's honored for "returning to glory," so to speak.

Of course, a hit song on the airwaves would make this easier in the record and song of the year categories. Airplay doesn't affect the vocalist categories because they'll nominate a performer for an album track, released single or not. If this is the case, Prince may not be nominated for any record-breaking amount of Grammys, but I think we'll see him!

Not saying it'll happen, but it's the pattern with Grammy voters.

Yeah, I follow the Grammys pretty closely as well, and if you go by that formula, it's a win for Loretta Lynn. She's 70-years-old and this is more of a "comeback" for her than it is for him (we know he hates that word wink). I like Musicology a lot, but I think Lynn's Van Lear Rose is a stronger candidate for many reasons.

Oh, I agree on the Loretta Lynn thing...especially since she has the "hip" factor of having Jack White as her producer/collaborator and the White Stripes were up for album of the year last year...

I still think Prince is right up there, though...

The Grammy Awards haven't really snubbed Prince. I think he has about 4 Grammys, so that's not really a "snub."

Remember a couple of years ago when Prince received the Soul Train "Male Artist of the Decade" Award? What a crappy show that was. Whitney Houston got the "Female Artist of the Decade" Award and they showed a long video montage of her work. Nothing was shown for Prince, and the guy introducing Prince flubbed up the intro.

BET should give him a lifetime achievement award...but that's a longshot because I think P might have dumped on them after they fired Tavis Smiley.

if u notice the grammys is usually just like alot of other award shows. no more than a popularity contest ...which songs is most popular...which artist...50 cent was wayyyyy more popular than evanescence, but they still ended up winnin 4 some strange reason...so the only way Prince will win is if the powers that b let him. and i kno he is not as great as prince..and i wasn't comparin them....i was just doin an example...another example is the bet awards...i think it was best female artist...beyonce won...now n my personal opinion alicia keys should've won but she didn't bcuz right now among ALOT of ppl beyonce is more popular.

read my above post..i'm not realy comparin...@least not their music...i'm sayin that n most catagories n the grammys its a popularity contest...50 was REALLY popular...but he didn't win...so what makes u think Prince will? the only way he will is if the powers that b let him.

Prince asked that they not do the long video montage so he could give that wack speech.

I think this is very much why he could win something. I wouldn't bet money on it, but I could see it happening. The Grammys are typically out of touch and questionable in their choices, and while Prince would be a "soft" choice (although I can't speak for the year's competition), I could see a "right the wrong" approach to giving him an award.

The academy loves "comebacks" and since there hasn't been a good album (Loretta Lynn is a critical exception) released this year yet I say right now he has a good chance of winning Best Album (Remember Steely Dan?). So yeah, right now I think he'll pick up that award.
