I haven't seen it but unless they had the original tapes they didn't really mix it into 5.1

It's still bootleg quality. It's picture is better than the brazilian version, not perfect, but better. The sound is improved but it runs too fast (Prince almost sounds like Camille). I'd definitely say hold out on an "official" release of this if you've got a DVD-R of this.

The picture isn't that bad - better than VHS quality. The sound is very good, but it runs 4% too fast due to converting from NTSC to PAL. Annoying if you listen to the cd a lot, but bearable if you haven't heard it in a while.

i bought it and i am very happy with it, but i live in the netherlands, so it wasn't expensive.

the sound is just great, because it's mixed in a way Prince would probably never have mixed it. that way it has some sounds to the forground that are great to discover, like Fink's keyboards.

HOT THING sounds great with the programmed little funky sounds.

in my opinion, Prince's voice and his guitar are too low in the mix though.
yes SIR!

redface I forgot about that PAL conversion. That's probably why mine looks a little shitty.

This leads me to ask this question: Why is Grafitti Bridge being given a dvd release this summer while Prince's finest celluloid moment is on the shelf gathering dust? Surely the demand for SOTT must exceed the demand for GB.

There must be legal/distribution issues...

I bought a copy of the Brazilian version on eBay for like $10 American. I knew it wasn't going to be DVD quality but I was fine with that -- I was looking for a format that wouldn't degrade over time like VHS does, and that's what I got! If you're looking for that, you're fine with the Brazilian version. Don't know much about the Dutch.

I don't think Warner has ever distributed SotT. It was distributed theatrically by Cineplex Odeon Films and on VHS by MCA Home Video.

I don't know. They may have some home video distribution rights, but that's just a guess. I wonder if it might have been sold to some 3rd-party distributor by now or if Prince himself has some control over it.

Now that I think about this more, I'm wondering if the fact that this wasn't distributed by Warner is what's holding up its DVD release. As is often the case with musicals, one group owns the rights to the film, the other to the music. Since the music was on Warner and the film was a Cineplex Odeon release, that may be what has complicated any further home video release. When a company distributes something on DVD, home video, etc., more often than not they only have the rights to do so for a certain amount of time: usually about 3 - 5 years. That would explain why Universal hasn't released it (unless they re-obtained the rights). Like I said, it's just speculation, but I'm guessing that likely has something to do with the fact that Grafitti Bridge has found it's way to DVD before SotT has.

To tell you the truth, I hadn't even really considered the juxtaposition. Huh...I did something clever without even thinking about it.
