Countries where P had no success?

Has Prince been successful around the whole globe or are there countries where he has not sold records like he did in Europe and the US?
thanks.

You can add Thailand to the list. Nobody apart from musicians seems to know anything about him. I was in a bar in Bangkok and I shouted at the house bands singer to play Purple Rain. He said who sings that? When I told him, he said, "What, the ladyboy?"

Can't get away from the jibes anywhere lol

Thailand is famous for it's (Prince)bootlegs, isn't it? And back to the question: I think Prince didn't do very well in the Netherlands.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Prince did too well in Mexico either. The only songs people I've talked to seem to remember from Prince are "Purple Rain" and "Batdance" ...or maybe I'm just talking to the wrong people. neutral

Yeah, He's huge in Japan. I heard that several people came over from Japan to tour Paisley Park and see his shows in St. Paul.

Yeah right! What kind of statement is this? Duh! eek
He was THE man during the 80's over here in Holland, had heaps of hits, Prince toured intensively during 86/87/88/90, and Dutch fans were his fave audience (hence Dortmund 1988). He only fell down a little during the 90's, but hey even The Most Beautiful Girl In The World hit the number 1 spot here! (barf!)

Maybe you were kidding? wink

I agree with most you are saying, but Dortmund is in Germany, so why didn't he choose a dutch city like Rotterdam?

Yeah, I was at some Prince concerts in the Netherlands and the crowd was great and Prince really seemed to enjoy playing there. But still Dortmund is not in the Netherlands no no no!

Good point! smile
But here's the story: (seatbelts! wink )

Prince played three times in Rotterdam that summer (88) with the Lovesexy tour (+/- 120.000 people).
He continued touring, but he decided to make a film of the Lovesexy show.
He absolutely wanted a 'Dutch' crowd for the filming.
Running out of time, and not being able to find a big enough venue in Holland at the last minute, he rented the Westfalenhalle in Dortmund (pretty close for Dutch fans).
Ticket sales started in Holland (I think exclusively, but I'm not 100% sure) making Prince sure that he got his 'Dutch' audience for the film, while the concert was ,obviously, in Germany.
The recording of the show was also in the hands of a Dutch filmteam, resulting in a liveshow on television (I watched it that night, and became a Prince fan from that day, I think it was the 9th September 1988) and the two Lovesexy videos (part 1&2).
I hope they'll be released on DVD sooner or later.

I hope this story answers your questions. wink
ANy people on this forum who were at the show in Dortmund in 1988?
Ta!

Thanks for the info LookUp2C. I thought that it might have something to do with the fact that Dortmund is not that far from the Netherlands. But I still think that the majority of the crowd was German not Dutch nod.
I was not at that show, I just saw one of the Lovesexy shows, the one in Frankfurt. I didn't know about the Dortmund show a long time before it took place, but then again I am not from Germany, so I don't know how much it was promoted there.

Ok, I'll look up the facts, and post it later.
I'm pretty sure there were not a lot of German fans there, only some 'international' fans who got their tickets through Dutch distribution canals.
Could be wrong though. wink
