Prince enjoying his Purple Rain 20th anniversary

07/07/2004 01:59 PM
ScreamingMedia

Pop superstar Prince is enjoying his Purple Rain 20th anniversary reunion because he wasn't able to tour with his co-stars in the movie back in 1984.

The film and its soundtrack became phenomenons and propelled Prince to superstardom, but he has never been able to take the show on the road.

But, during recent concerts on his Musicology tour, the pop star has been linking up with Morris Day & The Time, Wendy & Lisa and Sheila E to relive Purple Rain's biggest hits.

He says, "We never got the chance to do the real Purple Rain tour, because The Time broke up.

"But then there they were onstage... and people started tripping. I was watching my favourite band."

Purple Rain's hit soundtrack was released in America on 18 July, 1984. It went on to sell 10 million copies in the US alone and spent six months at the top of the album charts. The score also earned Prince an Oscar.

The film was released to cinemas on 27 July, 1984, and grossed US$60 million at the box office.

I guess I missed something when reading over recent concert/show reports - when has Lisa performed with P lately? I know Wendy has, but when has Lisa?

You didn't miss anything - I've seen this wrong in a few articles. The journalists are so fucking lazy they can't fathom the name "Wendy" without tacking on "& Lisa" in conjunction w/ anything Princely. Lisa hasn't performed w/ him recently, only Wendy has.

Somebody correct me if I'M wrong, but I doubt it biggrin

I thought so too, but maybe the triple threat tour predated PR. & when that hit he just toured on his own w/ the Revolution (and Sheila for some opening dates, right?)... shrug

Sheila for sure for some dates of the PR tour! My first Prince concert ever was the Dec. 28, 1984 PR concert in St. Paul and Sheila was his opening act. One of the best memories of my life! biggrin

the triple threat tour was in support of 1999. for the Purple Rain tour sheila was the opener the entire tour and at the end during I would die 4U Appollonia( how ever you spell it) 6 would come out too.

The time were disbanded, they did not "break up"

Morris left and the remaining Time members became The Family with Susanah Melvoin.

Then Jerome and Jellybean were intergrated into the Revolution until at some point Jelly bean left too.

Just a history lesson for the young ones wink

A correction for the young ones...Jellybean was never intergrated into the Revolution. Jellybean, St. Paul and Jerome were all intergrated into the Family first. Then after they disbanded Jerome went into the Revolution, and Jellybean went to Flyte Tyme with Jimmy and Terry as a producer.

Thank you for making that correction.....I think what the article was really trying to point out was that Prince never toured with The Time. We all know he toured with The Revolution and we all know Sheila was around here and there.

Wouldn't it be a wonderful thing if the "original" Time came back together? C'mon Jimmy, Terry, Jesse.....where ya at?

Thanks for clarifying that.It amazes me how journalists never get their facts straight.

The article claims that the 'Purple Rain' soundtrack was released on July 18,1984 and that the movie was released about a week later (July 27,1984).Is this correct? I could have sworn that the album was out WEEKS before the film came out.Or am I just imagining this?

DAMMIT!

see? it's THIS type of bullshit by that little purple man that PISSES ME OFF.

FUCK YOU PRINCE, & all the bullshit & headgames & manipulations you've perpatrated on those around you for all those years.

he has the fucking nerve to say "oh, The Time is my favorite band.."

really?
well, that wasn't the case 20-some years ago,
when the ORIGINAL members of The Time were together,
when they had that TIGHT, VERY funky music,
those precise moves
& enough attitude to fill the moon..

no, it's hard to imaging The Time being littlepurpleman's "favorite band" when they were, by Prince's own admission back in the day, "the only band I was afraid of"..
where it got to the point that, during stops at the larger venues during the 1999 "Triple Threat" tour, that insecure littlepurpleman resorted to taking The Time's name off the bill, lest they upstaged him-
like they often did during that tour.

yes, yes, yes.
what was supposed to only be "an opening act" grew into something MUCH bigger than that.
but before it got "out of control", littlepurpleman fortuitously had the "excuse" to fire Jimmy & Terry for missing a gig in Texas during the 1999 tour (yeah, yeah, most of you know Jerome strapped on a bass & pretended to play it while Prince actually played it offstage, while the always stunning Jill Jones put a suit on & hat over her head to be the other synth player for that set..)

with all due respect to Gerry & Paul, The Time was NEVER the same after littlepurpleman "did a Donald Trump" on Jimmy & Terry. YES, the "Ice Cream Castles version" of The Time became better known, but really.. that was from the momentum of their BRILLIANTLY TIGHT & FUNKY 2nd release What Time Is It?, as well as the breakout success of the film Purple Rain. even that new level of success, however, could not keep the group together. Morris obviously got tired of Prince's bullshit & headgames & whatever other little tactics he was throwing out.. so he was gone as soon as the noise from Purple Rain went down. then, Prince had the audacity (at least, presumably, in the eyes of Jesse) to propose Paul Peterson to front what was left of The Time at that point. obviously, Jesse wasn't having this either, so he split too. with all the major components of The Time now disbanded, Prince slapped together The Family - which actually put out a very good record themselves. but again, under the nearly suffocating chokehold of that littlepurple egomaniac, The Family managed to do, what - only 1 live show.

as surprising as it must have been for Jimmy & Terry to have been fired, they clearly did not look back, they doubtedly had few (if any) regrets about what went down. as most people know, Jimmy & Terry went on to be mega-huge producers & songwriters, working with everyone from Janet Jackson to Human League to Mariah Carey & countless others.
(WHAT - do you suppose - would be their rationale for re-joining The Time.. other than the "fun" of hanging with their "brothers"??? for the last 20 years or so (damn - has it been that long already??) they have been able to pick & choose their projects, with whom they would work.. & they've made more money than they can spend in their next 5 lifetimes.)

then with Jesse, after the all-too-brief "continuation" of The Time in 1990 (which coincided with that PITIFUL excuse of a film - & I use the word 'film' loosely - Grafitti Bridge,) he was apparently "voted out" of the group & last I heard, he still was not on the best of terms with the remaining members of the band (I wish this were not true..)

so, NO SHIT, littlepurpleman :
this present, watered-down version of "Morris Day & The Time" OUGHT to be his "favorite group" because they pose no threat to him on stage now! how EASY it is for littlepurpleman to say this now..

but let Jimmy, Terry & Jesse get back into the group..
let's see how much shit littlepurpleman would talk then.

as I've said here on the org more than once, I had the priviledge to see The Time on the Controversy & 1999 tours in '82 & '83, when they came through Richmond. back then, I was a HUGE Prince fan - I mean I ate, slept, drank & thought everything related to Prince, because back in the day-
when he used to cuss & eat meat & before he became a member of the Jehovah's Witness Protection Program-
Prince WAS the baddest dude out there. NOBODY could even DREAM of touching him, in terms of the music he made, his attitude & his direction.
as MUCH as I was into Prince back then, even I could see how people were saying "aw man.. The Time stole the show!" I couldn't really argue that, even though I always thought Prince put on an incredible show. yet afterwards, everybody was talking about how FUNKY - & FUNNY -
The Time was.

so any of you who very unfortunately never had the chance to see the ORIGINAL version of The Time..
there are no words that can describe what you missed.

so Prince ought to shut his shit-talking mouth up. if he loves The Time so much & they are really his "favorite group"..
then let him get Jimmy & Terry & Jesse back into the group..

then let THE TIME-
NOT "Morris Day & The Time"-
tour with him.

& NO, before anyone even tries to say it :
I am NOT "living in the past" ;
I am NOT "hatin' on prince" (hey.. he said he was going to be "number 1 at the bank".. & damn if he ain't done it! more power to him!)
I am NOT "holding a grudge" or anything like that.
(I have a good & full & relatively interesting life, & even if I didn't, there would still be no point in me wasting my time & energy "hatin' on" someone I've never met & only know through his music.)

it simply annoys me when he talks shit like this. EVERY nigga talks shit (goodness knows, I talk my own share!) but with littlepurpleman.. he gives the impression of really NOT HAVING A CLUE.
but, I suppose this is what happens when you to choose to spend your ENTIRE ADULT LIFE in a very small world that you have made for yourself & includes only recording in studios, playing concerts & being surrounded by docile "yesmen" & gawking fawning fans who can & will still follow you all over the country.

YEAH, prince : if he wants to impress me - & I KNOW HE DOESN'T - then let him (with all the "clout" he has) put

Morris, Jesse, Terry, Monte, Jimmy Jam, Jellybean & Jerome

on the same stage, at the same time, & let them play together.
EVEN BETTER, put them in a studio together.. & let them RECORD AN ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL.

yeah. we'll see who's a fan of who then..
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

Since there's a rumor going around that Showtime will air a live performance of the Musicology tour sometime in November, does anyone think Prince will have Wendy, The Time & Sheila E on that show, like he did for the Essence Music show? It'd be a GREAT opportunity, exposure wise, to do that.

WOW!! Mlt this is why I come to the board!!! Tell it like it IS!!!

I love Prince too but it is obvious how his ego has compromised things for him. Now I did see the "1999" and "Purple Rain" tours. I don't remember The Time doing a better show but the original Time is THE SHIT. You are right if he REALLY wants a reunion go get ALL of them Jesse, Terry, James, Morris and Monte (is that right?). Mlt you write the way the journalists SHOULD write about him.

I just don't appreciate him sharing the stage with Sheryl Crow or whoever that was at the Rave thing that was on cable but he can't work with Meshell Ndegeocello? He's too old to be so insecure. That's why his label failed not wanting to put anybody on that can hang with him.

I do like Lenny Kravitz but musically he can not stand up to Prince yet he's on the stage with him. And I don't care what others say seeing him with Beyonce was just gross for me. Maybe it's my age (33) but I dunno.

I wish he would reunite the Time hell I wouldn't mind a Vanity Six show if they don't look too beatdown.

Thanks for your post because his ego is the only issue I've ever had with him. He's a talented man a legend he should get over it and REALLY show the people what the philosophy of Musicology is all about and get the original TIME back together.

And another thing I agree with you on is that he is too isolated with all these yes-people. That's never good for anyone. I hope purpleman gets over it.

Thanks again for telling it like it is.

DAMMIT!

see? it's THIS type of bullshit by that little purple man that PISSES ME OFF.

I am NOT "living in the past" ;
