The Gold Experience

So I have had this in my CD player for about the last 2 weeks - and I think I really like it. But I have gotten the idea from some of the posts out here that it is not a liked album. What are the problem areas? I love P-Control, I Hate U, Shhhhh - So what is it that ya'll don't like and why.
Maybe if you took off that chastity belt you could breath a little mo betta.

I could be wrong in what I was gleening from the posts. I have to hear Pcontrol on my way to work each day - and I Hate U - I would think someone would have done a cover of that song - it is great. 319 - Now - very good sound on this album!!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

I think most Prince fans like The Gold Experience. I *LOVE* it. Probably my third or fourth favorite Prince CD EVER -- and I like almost every single one of 'em! guitar

It's always reminded me of an updated version of Purple Rain. But my ex-girlfriend, who's still a friend, hates the CD. So maybe you're right about a lot of people thinking it's weak (although I don't know how they could think that). My friend said she doesn't think it has the melodies and rhythms of Prince's best work.

I always point to Dolphin. She always holds up her nose and turns away.

Oh well. To each their own, and everythin'.

Luv & Peace,

I was never a great fan of Dolphin at first but now really enjoy. I love the live versions he was doing during the ONA tour and think the lyrics are excellent. IMHO I always think that the song is about his fight with Warners, i.e. "If I came back as a Dolphin would you listen to me then..." etc

- Well, I absolutely love that album. It´s one of my all time ones. I think it was his last great album before TRC (not counting The Vault, because it was a collection of songs). I absolutely love the band work. The songs and arrangements are great and I still get excited when I listen to the end of Billy Jack Bitch and I hate U, not to mention the great guitar/drums of ´Shhh´. In the funk part, the NPG proved they could do really hard funk on ´Now´ and ´P Control´.
I don´t know if it´s just me, but I still think 94/95 were magical years, despite the name change.

I like the album but don't love it...definitely could have been a hit if marketed better. I think the title track is an underrated gem and defintely should have been the first single. P Control is one of the man's best attempts at semi-rap; Billy Jack Bitch was a great comeback record to that witch CJ; Now is a great song for "raising the roof"; Dolphin was a great pop song musically but I never dug it lyrically; hell, Endorphinemachine and 319 were pretty great too. And who can forget Shy which I never really understood but sang along with pretty enthusiastically anyway.

I pretty much like all the fast songs but I am not a big fan of the ballads. Shhh is just alright and I really never liked I Hate U. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World is definitive Prince but seemed kinda shoehorned on the album so I don't really consider it an album track in the truest sense.

i have to disagree...

i've never really got into this album. I adore I Hate U and some others too, but overall its just somehow too... everything... i just doesnt move or touch me like many other albums. I dig most of his 90's albums more, 'though i usually skip the 90's stuff... prefer 80's and 00.

I agree with most of the posters, and think it's his last great album until TRC, and possibly Musicology (though I'll probably cattch hell for that). I also agree with others that Dolphin should've been left off the record - I can't listen to that trite, cheesy tune. When the Musicology reviews started coming out and people were comparing certain songs to Dolphin (i.e. Cinammon Girl, Million Days), I was dreading the album. Sure enough, those are two of the weakest tracks on the new album.

Well...not by me. I think Prince made a comeback creativaly with "The Gold Ex.". I was waiting for a album like that since he got lost with D&P.

It's my fourth favourite Prince album of all time. It's just not quite able to reach that ungodly level of amazing purple magic that Purple Rain, SOTT, and 1999 are at.

Great-amazing songs on TGE

Gold (5/5)
Endorphinmachine (4.5/5)
Shhh (4.5/5)
P Control (4.5/5)
Dolphin (4.5/5)
319 (4.5/5)

Good-great songs on TGE

Now (4/5)
I Hate U (4/5)
Shy (3.5/5)
The Most Beautiful Girl (album version is too noisy sounding) (3.5/5)
Billy Jack Bitch (3.5/5)
We March (3/5)

Average-bad songs on TGE

NONE!

I also stand by my opinion that TGE has great production because its slickly produced sound gives it this musically rich effect that goes perfectly with the album and helps it stand out.

Almost entirely agree, but I'd move up "Now" (a phenomenal party anthem), "I Hate U", but move down "Dolphin" and "Most Beautiful Girl" into the average/bad song category. "Most Beautiful" is one of - if not the - worst singles he's ever released. And I just can't get into Dolphin.

Probably his most underrated album by the mainstream, although fans seem to appreciate it. Seems like it was a victim of the bad break-up with WB.

definitely his best album of the 90's, and IMHO his last truly great commercial album.
I'd say it's only fault is that it's a little overproduced in places, but all the songs are great
(and I love Dolphin). It's just a shame that the album coincided with his major fall out with WB,
otherwise I'm sure it would've been his biggest hit album since Purple Rain and would've spawned
more hit singles than is considered decent in polite society.

I LOVE IT WHEN STIMPY RESPONDS!!!

'The Gold Experience' is definately one of the greatest records from Prince/prince
inmyhumbleandoftenoverlookedopinion

it goes to every "city" he's tried, up to that point, and still retains the essence of everything that the fans(hardcore or casual) want or ever wanted.
it goes even further with "Shy" and regresses with "319"

If y'all will,

A PERFECT "prince" ALBUM!!!

however,

That's the first song i ever heard of from 'TGE'

The video was played on MTV Europe, but no single available.

Very frustrating!!!

To this day,I still think "Dolphin" is the defining track from 'The Gold Experience'

Like (Y'all know the respective records!):
"Dinner With Delores"
"Letitgo"

Hmm.

Coulda been another, dare i say it...

(gasp)

THIS is the Gold Experience that I love:

NPG Operator (0:10)
Days Of Wild (3:47)
NPG Operator (0:18)
The Most Beautiful Girl In The World (4:25)

Ripopgodazippa (4:39)

Shy (5:04)
Billy Jack Bitch (5:32)
Eye Hate U (5:54)
NPG Operator (0:45)
Gold (7:23)

biggrin

The released configuration doesn't appeal as much to me. Dolphin and Endorphinmachine are Come tracks in my mind - and I quite dislike the version of Endorphinmachine that was released. Love Dolphin, though. biggrin

Tracks like We March and Shhh doesn't really appeal to me, and although I think P. Control is a funky tune, the lyrics doesn't really appeal to me. neutral

Anxiety

The segues get on my nerves, and there's something about the flow of the album that turns me off just a little bit...not really crazy about "We March", and even though I like "Shy", it just doesn't FIT in that album for me, for some reason...there's so much that I love about this album in bits and pieces, but as a whole, I dunno, it's far from my favorite album...but it's definitely indispensible.

Prince practically threw it at people back in '94, what with the Beautiful Experience TV movie, the tape he sent to a radio station and such. What, I should've just ducked and let it pass me by? Prince wanted his fans to have it - and for free. biggrin

The songs on The Gold Experience and Come were pretty interchangeable. Most of them were
recorded around the same time (often in the same sessions). In the end though, the 'solo'
Prince tracks ended up on Come and the 'full band' tracks ended up on The Gold Experience.
There were many early versions of both albums where tracks freely swapped between albums.
Personally, I'd love to have seen one of the early ideas for these tracks followed through, and
that was for a sprawling double or triple album entitled 'The Dawn' to released instead.
