It's been such a long time ago that I don't actually remember anymore. If I had to guess it would be Let's Go Crazy, when I watched the Purple Rain movie on video for the first time. I do remember a friend coming over years before and mentioning someone named Prince and a song he sang called, I Wanna Be Your Lover, but I had never heard the song or of him until that time. I've never been a big radio listener.
I was quite cautious and suspicious of Prince and his music because of my strict religious background. It instilled in me a mentality that ALL "secular" pop/rock/funk/soul/r&b music was worldly and not of God. Prince's music was especially something to be avoided. I had to learn to appreciate Prince's music and his talents. It's been a long journey for me in personal freedom and understanding.
There's nothing to fear but fear itself.

DAMN!
My answer is almost the same as yours, Maria!

I remember hearing both "Soft & wet" & "I wanna be your lover" when I was a pre-teen, also thinking it was a woman singing!

Of course, I didn't get hooked until '80, when I heard him declare "Where I come from, we don't give a damn" on "Uptown," coming back from Va Beach in August of that year.. it was the 1st time I'd ever really heard anyone cuss on a record, & do it so difiantly..
then, after I totally got into "Dirty Mind" I went back & bought his 1st 2 albums & that's when I realized.. "hey! I know this.. song.. THIS is who sung..?????"

ahh.. those good old, meat-eating, multiple syllable cuss word days..!
smile
I'll see you tonight..
in ALL MY DREAMS..

I remember it clear as day, it was Delirious off 1999. My sister had taped it off the radio. Prince has had me open ever since!

Just as long as we're together at a roller rink. This memory came back to me while I was listening to the album after I bought it in '91. I heard the instrumental part of the song and could visualize shaking my hips to the beat of that song. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me, but that memory did surface when I heard this song again. I was 5 when that song came out.

I was 5 when I heard When Doves Cry on the radio. I didn't understand the song (I thought it was "When love dies" and something about animal and cheerios instead of "animals strike curious poses") but it started a life long love affair with Prince. While I don't remember the exact experience, it is something that has stuck with me for many years.

I was only three when Purple Rain came out, but I remember very vaguely hearing snippets of Little Red Corvette and When Doves Cry during the 80s. I didn't actually know who they were by until I was about 11. That was when I first heard "7" on the radio and it sucked me right in. Since that moment, my life has changed drastically, and thank God. Can't imagine where I would be 2day if I had never heard that song.

What is the first Prince Song you Ever Heard and you feeling about it at the time?

I remember when I was a little girl I heard 1999 and Little Red Corvette and really dug it! Soon After, I turned on the TV saw the video to When doves Cry and feel in LOVE with the man, the image and the music. I still feel that way today!

I think it was Tamborine. The lyrics were a bit shocking to a non-Prince fan.....but I did get hooked on him! "He grew on me"!! eek)

I have no I dea, the First album I owned was Batman. I traded w/ this dude for a Weird Al Tape, and he was exstatic with his Weird Al. I was like 12 or something and didn't get the full depth of the album but later in life, I c it as (sadly) one of the best decisions I ever made. Weird al is funny and all, but please...

I know I heard songs by Prince off the radio here and there, but I think I didn't really get it. I remember seeing the Purple Rain album cover and being interested (I was in like 3rd or 4th grade) but I didn't see the movie until just a few years ago. Don't ask me why. As for songs, I was probably more into Chaka's (well, Prince's) "I Feel For You" then Prince.

Then one day, my best friend gave me the "Sign O The Times" cassette for my birthday...
