What should Prince do when he edits old songs?

Hope y'all understand what I am trying to ask. When Prince edits curse words out of his older songs what sound do you think should replace the curse word? I really don't like the backwards "spin" that he usually uses. Couldn't he do something less intrusive? Of course I would rather hear the song unedited but I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon. Any thoughts?

If he edits the remasters, I won't be buying no matter how he goes about it. Fuck should stay fuck. Purps should put out 2 different versions if he feels compelled to butcher the classics. Parental Warning stickers should suffice if he wants certain ears to be steered in another direction.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I completely agree. But if he has to edit songs how would you prefer him to do it. That backwards stuff makes me dizzy!

I am a big fan of the backwards bits, they are so very easy to restore. Obviously, I would prefer no changes, but if they have to be edited, then the backwards trick wins every time for me.

I prefer the backwards flip to empty air. When our funk station here plays hip hop, half the song sounds like dead air.

Well if P has the masters he can just remove the words but not the music - for instance the bit on xtra lovable when he says "I'm going to have to rape you now" he could just be remove the "vocal layer" and the music/noises could continue. or he could just edit out that part completely and it wouldn't effect the song too much.

Same with Rebirth of the flesh - when he says "this ain't life muthafucker, this is real" he could just remove that line from the song retaining the music underneath. or he could just leave the "this is real" part?

I think it can definitely be done on a lot of his unreleased stuff and it wouldn't effect the songs too much - although it would be hard to do it to Days of Wild for instance! or songs which are negative in tone throughout or against his new views!

I also hope he allows Wonderful Ass to remain uncut!

we shall see (one day!)

He already did it with DOW at a concert. I don't remember which ones, but he did change the lyrics to suit his new found religion.

It wasn't too bad, but after listening to this song just the other night un-edited it's a major difference.

I'd prefer that he keep them just as they are and chock it up to, hey this was me back in the day. We all understand that he doesn't cuss anymore so, leave the music alone.

But I will agree with Dansa, if there's gonna be bleep althrough the song then that's just blasphemy.

Short answer: He should stop and reconsider his actions!

Long answer: I suggest he first enjoys an evening of curry and beer. Then, the following morning, samples a rich, resonant 'botty burp', slows the sample down and puts it through the same effect that creates the Darth Vader vocal effect on TRC....

Whilst this may not be pleasing to everyone's aesthetic sensibilities, I myself would pay good money to hear the resultant version of Sexy MF.... wink

I totally agree with squirrelgrease, too.

As for what he should do if he really *must* edit songs, what bugs me is when he tries to clean up a song by plugging in religious words in place of the offending word/s. And that's not because I have a problem with him being religious now or because I like cursing or swearing and think it "needs" to be in a song. I'm glad he's found what he was looking for and all; my issue is because when he does that it makes the song sound ridiculous because a blaringly religious word or reference doesn't realy fit in with tone or context of certain more racy songs. It throws the entire song off (for me) and wrecks it.

Like in Gett Off: "...21 scriptures in a one night stand..." rolleyes

I know there are other examples of this I just can't think of them right now.
