"3 Chains O' Gold" and "Bohemian Rhapsody"

Many times, I hear people saying "3 Chains O' Gold" was a stupid version of the classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. I like both! wink
Which rock-opera do u prefer?

Bohemian Rhapsody. That song always makes me think of the scene in Wayne's World when they're headbang.

i am afraid 3 chains o gold sucks.

i love that album, but this is embarrassing - by far and away my least favourite song on the album. lyrically it's gobsmackingly bad. "i've got 3 chains o' gold, and they will shine forever. they are the nucleus of my soul; melt down no, they will never." ill

and musically it's okay, but it's not in the same league as Bohemian Rhapsody.

best forgotten, for me.

Two of the worst songs of all time. "I would do anything for love" with meatloaf is also in that cathegory.
I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

I think its great too! It definitely goes through a lot of changes, but its pretty tight the way Prince does it. The song is based on Moonbeam Levels BTW smile

I said this on a similar thread not-too-long-ago;

...my belief is that Prince was just chillin' at poolside, listening to the radio...when Bohemian Rhapsody came on, and he was like; "Hey! I can do THAT!" So he ran into his studio and in about 15 minutes he produced 3 Chains O' Gold.

But unfortunately, they did NOT shine forever!

You really prefer Arrogance and The Max to 3 Chains 'O' Gold?

First of all I admit (like Quake) that I like the song. But you can almost see Prince doing this back in the day. hrmph

I don´t know, i love both songs,

THe two songs shoul be mixed.
The Intro and verses should be from Bohemian, then it should come the slow flute part of 3 chaisn o gold, the mama mia part of Bohemia shoudl go away it is chessy, then it would be the time of the rock part of bohemia with the final solo of let´s go crazy. lol

I like "Three Chains O Gold" boxed

Especially the slower part that goes "We both do nothing and call it love...is this love?"

Yes,it's silly, pretentious and over-the-top,but that's what makes it so great lol

I think 3 chains is only a fraction worse than arrogance, chilling by the pool? more like getting heat stroke, he would have to be ill to write such CRAP

eek

i think to compare it to bohemian rhapsody is an insult sorry neutral

The songs are very different in many ways, but it seems obvious that 3 Chains must be based on Bohemian R.
Structurally they are very similar, and B.H. was popular the year before 3 Chains.
B.H. is a classic. I hated 3 Chains when I first heard it, but it's grown on me, as most Prince songs do.
Still, it can't compare. Queen's masterpiece vs. one of Prince's more obscure songs.

One of the worst moments in Prince music IMO are the lines:
"Give back the chains! If U dont U'll die! Nothing should come between U & I!"

I still don't know what the chains are (other than the nucleus of his soul).

I actually think the song structure is more similar to "A Day In The Life" by The Beatles.

"Woke up, fell out of bed, dragged a comb across my head"

"This morning I wanted a cup of coffee but I didn't have any cream"

I just think of "A Day In Life" before I think of "Bohemian Rhapsody" when it comes to "3 Chains O' Gold".

My favorite Prince rock opera? "The Marrying Kind/If I Was The Man In Ur Life".
"She made me glad to be a man"

Maybe Bohemian Rhapsody was based on A Day in the Life.
All the songs have that multi tempo style. Like several songs in one.
But that middle part "This morning I wanted a cup of coffee..." is straight outta "I see a little silhouette of a man..."
The Beatles don't have that operatic stuff in it like the other two songs.
But I definitely hear what you mean.
And all the songs are really different, despite the similarities.

Yes, the flow of inspiration for this may lead to Queen or the Beatles; and

No, this is not a bad song at all, its raw and wild, and I will admit that his guitar work on this is a little less inspired but iverall its a great track. Give it the right place and time(i.e. an aftershow) and I'm sure P would turn this into something as legendary as 'Day O' Wild'.
