The horns in Let's Go Crazy didn't bother me so much. The keyboard part always sounded like synth horns to me, so I just get to hear the real thing in concert instead.

Hornz are fine - Hornz overkill aint. It's downright wrong. It's good 2 see the band has really jelled now and gotten tighter - 4 awhile there (around the time of the Asiatic tour last year especially) it seemed as if they were somewhat of a loose cannon within the unit, but they seem 2 have their shit 2gether now. But yeah - puhhleeeze - tame the damned horns on Let's Go Crazy a little at least 4 fuck's sake! [This message was edited Mon Jul 12 14:50:18 2004 by bananacologne]

The horns ruined the song. It is a hard rock jam not a jazz piece! Andy is a four letter word.

I'd say that the use of synths in place of horns is one of the key elements of Prince's "Minneapolis Sound." While I tend to like horns in general (Ever heard live horns being played over house records? It's musical ecstasy.), they seem out-of-place in pre-1985 Prince songs. Ironically, my favorite part of the Musicology tour show is the new arrangement of "D.M.S.R." with horns. Go figure. Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position. |

Anyone hear the Honolulu boot where Prince has the crowd chant "Horns"? Someone close to the mic (audience recording) yells something to the effect of "HORNS! WE PAID 75 FUCKING BUCKS... HORNS!"

Dude, P had a horn solo on the PR intro in 19friggin'85 or something already, when Eric Leeds first joined the band.

Eh,I don't really mind the horns in Lets Go Crazy. LGC isn't a hard rock piece anyway. It's just rock tinged pop (at least compared to bands like Nirvana and Metallica). Lets Go Crazy sounds good with horns because it IS a pop song. BLEEP BLEEP!

They can get their crusty asses off the stage for all I care. Too many fuckin horns. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

this horn debate is now reaching stages of ridiculousness.
1. No-one (not even the legendary Maceo) is going to play more or less than Prince wants, so it's clearly what Prince wants not a question of playing to get paid. 2. Like hectim said, horns have been there since the 80's and Eric, nothing new there. 3. Vainandy and others seems to suggest that horns have no place outside jazz... excuse me but: Ray Charles had one of the best horn sections ever, and James Brown really allowed for the rythmic use of horns in a way no one had done before and that was funk... and George Clinton in his various incarnations (one of which was after all the first Black Rock act) used some of those same horn legends (Maceo, Fred Wesley) with similar fantastic effect. Wake up everyone: Musicology is the name of the album and the tour, this is about musicianship, maybe he is trying to wake some ears up!!! Sometimes I wonder with these posts if he will ever succeed!
