I just bought ''emancipation". Anything worthwhile?

Hi folks,
I just bought "emancipation" for about $6. (I was warned, but for that price... cool )
Looking at the package at home, I realized it has the worst album-art ever. eek
I've started listening to the first tracks (not so great), and thinking about the 3 cd's I had to crawl through, I thought: 'hey let's ask other Prince fans what they think is worth listening to!'.

So, is there anything really worthwhile on 'emancipation'?

Please let me know, so I can check out the quality stuff , right away. smile

I just purchased it yesterday. I haven't listened to all 3 cds, but so far I am really digging "The Human Body" the most. I don't recall ever reading any post about it on the org, but it is off the hook. So different than anything I have heard from P. It's sorta of a techno/electronic type song. I have played it repeatedly. Even my 2 yr old was jamming yesterday when I played it in the car....dancing jig

"Sleep Around" and his cover of "La, La, La....Means I Love You" are also nice too me.

That's so true. The first song I listened to was Face Down because so many people on the org talked about how it is such a wonderful song. Well, needless to say, I was very disappointed. I didn't know that it was one of P's rap songs.. confused Same thing happened with Pussy Control, I thought the song was going to be the bomb and then I heard it and I was again dissappointed. I just can't take P when he raps, because he can't IMO.

I like 'The Human Body' but it's apparent that most folks on here don't like it, so it is a good idea to listen to it and decide for yourself.

True. When I was a kid I had weeks to start digging' my newly bought albums.
But now with two kids running around the house, there's not so much time for that. (in my case anyway)
ANd especially when I bought THIS album, I mean, 3 cd's!!!
I was just curious what the standout tracks were, according to other fans, without having to listen through it for hours and hours.
Call me lazy and/or impatient. biggrin

And, err, maybe I'm not so hungry anymore for new Prince stuff like I was back in the 80's. wink

Thanx again for the replies, although I was lookin for only a handfull of 'classics'. smile

I absolutely love Emancipation. All 3 hours of it! I don't know why so many folks dislike it. Sure it's bloated. But it's the album he was born to make. He said so himself. I think it should have been much more successful than it was.

My favourite tracks are:

White Mansion
In This Bed I Scram
Sex In The Summer
Joint 2 Joint
Sleep Around
The Love We Make

The trouble is, with this album (and this is just MY opinion) is that the standout tracks only standout when compared to the rest of this sub-par album. But if most of my faves on Emancipation were on any other album, they'd be the weak tracks!

Still, 6 bucks tho'... can't go wrong

And you're right - this one DOES have the worst art ever! razz

I think that would be NPS.

Although the design problem with Musicology puts it near the top. The damn book falls out everytime you pick it up.

Jeez, I concidder emancipation princes best album after pr and sott. The first disk rocks from the first note tot the last. And the rest of the set is awsome as well. Even though 3 disks is a bit to much to listen to one after another i can listen to any disk front to back any time.

Btw: I think the artwork is great, supports the theme of the music very well.

i can think of any other prince album where there is a constant level of songs thoughout. that doesnt mean they are great, it just means that none really stand out and none are terrible (in the horny pony league). they just all seem washed in some synthetic production and never really get close (like for example "international lover" does).

saying that i like disc 2 overall and welcome the newer style stuff on disc 3.

fav overall - holy river
skippest overall - my computer

i like the human body very much indeed.

but then i also like Mr Happy & face down etc. i'm definitely of the opinion that this could have been an astonishing single album. but there's too much filler on here. i could well do without pump like Jam of the Year.

Worthwhile? Yes. In fact, I'd call most of it worthwhile. But, as many people have already said, there's nothing even close to classic on it. I personally like the Bonnie Raitt cover best. For me the real problem is the Kirky J. drum beats. Sounded dated and soulless even for the mid-90s.

I remember LOVING Emanciption when it first came out. I mean, when you're a fan, getting 36 new Prince songs handed to you at one time is an orgasmic proposition. At that time, I remember liking a good deal of it, too.

Surprisingly, at least for me, I have found that the album hasn't aged very well. There aren't that many songs on the first disc that I like enough to grab it before any number of other Prince cds. The second disc, I agree, is thematically tight but doesn't excite me like it once did. I guess the songs I like the most are on the third disc, but there are some odd things on there..experiments in popular sounds of the day like techno and a few other non-Prince-ish sounds.

Still, I think any fam should own the set. It was recorded and releaed at an important time in Prince's life. And every now and then, I still find a lot of pleasure in remembering what life was like when it first hit the streets.

Personally, I like disc 3 the best, followed by 2 and then 1.

Emancipation is a set that u can't rush thru or force down your throat. Let it merrinate 4 a few listens. It'll grow on u even the 1st few songs that u don't like that well right now. I'm not saying that u r going 2b jumpin out ya seat but u will appreciate the diversity of the cd as a whole.

Ehh, Emancipation has its share of filler on the first and third discs, but this is still Prince at his last creative peak as an artist (imo).

Disc I

Jam of the Year
Somebody's Somebody
Betcha By Golly Wow
White Mansion
eye Can't Make U Love Me
In this Bed eye Scream

Disc II

All of it. This single disc is absolutely brilliant. Emale and Sex in the Summer are merely good, but the rest is either great or amazing. Some of the most romantic music I've ever heard.

Disc III

Face Down
La, La, La Means eye Love U
Style
My Computer
The Love We Make
Emancipation

For me, this was his last great album. I haven't seen him write songs as amazing as The Love We Make or Friend, Lover... since this era. Let this one slowly seep in.
