Sorry, just don't agree. Greatest Romance is just really listless, and the lyrics are so impersonal, they're just not interesting at all.
Hot Wit U is yet another embarrassing foray into hip hop
So Far So Pleased should've been great but, again, it comes off sort of listless and rushed.
Man 'O' War and Tangerine are pretty good, and I Love U's a stone cold classic, but that doesn't add up to much of a great album. And you did name the better ones!

It's not terrible but it's Prince "paint by numbers". It is way too safe and calculated...the focus is so much on Santana like comeback that Prince never lets go on any of the songs. It beats the living hell out of his 2000 releases before Musicology because it at least SOUNDS like Prince.

Maybe I am somewhat negatively affected in my opinion by the absolutely terrible marketing of this record. It was completely designed to be a crossover smash and then abandoned; even the songs that could have been hits ("So Far So Pleased especially) never got the chance. It was just as much Prince's fault as it was Aristas.

Artistically weak and commercially stillborn.
All good things they say never last...

I haven't got this album anymore, I sold it. Maybe I'll repurchase it so I can listen again and give my verdict on this thread. Then again, maybe not!

i think "rave" was the last time i tried to listen to a prince album a lot in an attempt to like it. i haven't listened to it in years...though "rave IN2" is a vast improvement, and if that had been the official release, i'd have nothing but praise for it. even though the songs are more or less the same, they're two different albums to me - "UN2" bad, "IN2" very, very good.

nod

My favorite song is Pretty Man. Essential and classic...deemed into obscurity by being a hidden track. Hell, I didn't even know it was there until someone pointed it out. That's probably because I didn't like the album too much...sorta had to listen to it and try and like it. Rave INto is much better...Undisputed, Rave, and Hot wit you are actually listenable. Beautiful strange is great...and Romance gets a bit better and longer.

Why oh why was Pretty Man never released? Great song! Definitely evokes the spirit of James Brown. Only to be "redone" as The Work...and then Musicology.

There are some great songs ("So Far, So Pleased," "I Love U..."), but it just runs too long and tries way too hard to be a commercial hit.

i love the colors of rave- white, silver and blue. prince's guitar and that droning drum machine on the title track - that doesn't sound like anything i've ever heard before; so far so pleased - a great car song, probably written on another planet (where it was a huge hit); undisputed - what's with that bottom? is he for real?
rave IS vastly underrated: it's such a cool collection of great tunes. period. (that's all i've ever wanted from a prince record).
so why is it dissed so much? because it failed commercially, people tend to form their views of in retrospect, i.e., they start by asking "why did this album fail commercially"? the funny thing is, most will say "rave sucks" and then list the two or three or four/five/six...songs that are the exception. by the time several posts are made, you will have covered just about every song on the album.
rave sucks. except for these 12 songs which are brilliant!

The differences...

Rave is extended and 4x4 dance beat. It starts off kinda hokey but gets a lot better as it progresses.

Hot wit you - Nasty Girl remix. Definitely different and quite errie. Very good. Mixes Nasty girl with the song lyrically. Only time I have hear P sing Nasty girl.

Undisputed - Way better. Better rapping too. Why you gettin my back when you frontin'

Romance - Longer.

Beautiful Strange - New track. Slow, lots of guitar. Great song. Replaced Strange But true

Man O'war is remixed too, but I am not familiar with the differences as I haven't listened to it that much.

Pretty Man is Extended...after the hang up of the phone the song goes on for a bit.

Other that that the rest is the same. The packaging is different too. Regular case but there's a booklet with pictures and lyrics as opposed to the fold out thing and the hard to read text.

Overall a much better package. Makes me mad that I got the original. I think you can still get it int he online store for a decent price. Don't get it off of ebay..folks are wanting 50 bucks for it or something...

It's not essential to get this, but if you like Rave...or better yet if you want to like Rave, get hte remixed version.

I am curious to hear "In 2" but it seems too much like a scam to me.
It's practically the same record isn't it?

I really like Silly Game. I hardly noticed it at first. It's a perfect little song. I love the bridge. I found myself singing it, and i couldn't even remember which album it was on.
That's how little an impression Rave made on me.
I'm not saying it's horrible, it was horribly misnamed, though. Most of the songs are depressing and unexciting.
My brother made a good point. he said it's truly sad when the best song on a Prince record was written by sheryl crow!

It's generally the same *SONGS*, but it's SO not the same record.

Listen to someone else's copy if you have to. It's good stuff.

I agree with the thread topic, this is a great CD.

Actually one of his last to impress me. The Rainbow Children was pretty good, but the religious overtones took it's toll. The music is great and it's a good album, but I like Rave better.

Musicology is good, but some tracks just don't do it for me. "Call My Name" is ok, but He's done better ballads.

Through and through, Rave is awesome. My only complaint is the weak cover of "Everyday Is A Winding Road," but I didn't like the song when Sheryl Crow sang it, so I skip that track.

Rave is actually my favorite Prince album of the 90's, tied with Emancipation. It's just a tight, focused collection of tunes.

The Greatest Romance, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic, Tangerine, I Love U, all are among my favorite Prince songs.

thanks for the info! i already have beautiful strange, which i think is one of his best songs of that period...why on earth did he leave it off the original. All the gushing on this thread makes me think I need to give it another shot tho...it has been YEARS since I put it on.

Glad to see more support for the album; I've always thought that it was one of his more "forgotten" works of his career.

It's totally underrated. I think the problem is that what's bad on it stands out as REALLY bad. Probably taints the feel of the album altogether for a lot.

A cover of Every Day...?! C'mon Prince, that's more embarassing than the opening of Grafitti Bridge.

Hot Wit U? Plastic & forced. Not sexy at all.

Baby Knows, Rave, and So Far... just irritate me too for some reason.

But damn, the great songs here are addictive. I play Wherever U Go... all the time, it always makes me feel better. It's just so happy. I Love U But... is the most heartbreaking P song I've ever heard, just phenomenal. Strange But True is quirky sounding and brilliant, Sun, Moon etc. is a great night song to relax to, Man 'O' War is a nice r&b song to compliment the album, and even Greatest Romance, Silly Game and Tangerine are good songs to listen to.

Flawed, but a really good album. 3.5/5
