As an album it does go on a bit. Too many of the songs are just a repeated riff looped for way too long, the vocals providing the only variation. I hardly listen to it at all, but I appreciate its value as the album which "broke" him to many people.

1999 was intended as a party anthem album. It was the fucking soundtrack for every house party back then, and that shit still gets people off their asses. The songs were supposed to be long.

The editing on MTV made alot of y'all some ADD muthafukkas.

If 1999 was a compilation entitled "1999: The 12" Mixes" containing ridiculously long dance remixes of classic songs with sensible lengths, it would be great. I never thought I would tire of the groove in the 1999 title track, but at 6 minutes it totally wears out. "Mommy? Why are all these songs so damn long?"

(motherly voice) because they are. now shut your mouth and dance before i spank your butt! mad lol
