Is 1999 A Masterwork Or What? I just reviewed this album on www.amazon.com and I gave it 5 stars straight up. It's such a long album, but the whole album clocks at about 70 minutes. It has the classics: 1999, Little Red Corvette, D.M.S.R, and Delirious. I really think that this along with Sign O The Times and Purple Rain is one of the definitive statements of the 80's. 1999 is a masterwork that has Prince playing every synthesizer, drum, bass, & guitar you can think of. What do you think of it. Post your opinions. Check me out and add me on:

1999 is what established Prince as a star in the US. It paved the way for his global success.
The album, of course, is genius. Any album where an artist takes his time and let the songs BREATHE is to be congratulated.

Honestly? No. It's WAY too long. Every track on 1999 feels like an extra-long 12" mix. Do we really need eight minutes of DMSR?

And DMSR & Automatic should be LONGER!!!! Why is the length of a song relevant to whether or not one likes the song? The length of those two songs is like extra icing on the cake. It just enhances something that is already good. 1999 is a five star album in my book. The weak points are Free and Delirious, but because all the other songs are exceptionally good, it pretty much cancels out the mediocrity of those two songs. 1999 turned me out... I think it's a real shame that How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore was a b side. That's a 5 song. It should've replaced International Lover as the album closer.

I've already posted why 1999 is so great at least a couple of times in this forum in the past (so I won't repeat it any time soon), and I steadfastly refuse to be swayed that SOTT is superior to it. Don't give a rat's ass what anybody says. I also think the people who complain about the length of the songs on 1999 are a bunch of ninny pop fans whose attention spans rarely allow for anything outside of 3 or 4 minutes of traditional song structure.
That is all. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

you need ALL of DMSR homes.. that track is the BOMB as well as the whole album 1999 which in my opinion was the best Prince album ever. That was the prelude to Purple Rain but..... 1999 was the groundbreaker. The flow and chemistry of every song is Gold. P was and still is.. Amazing

That is all. Snob! Some lengthy songs are fine, Joint 2 Joint, Come, Sleep Around, Lady Cab Driver and Crystal Ball spring to mind. But a song has gotta go somewhere to keep my interest. The problem with some of the tracks on 1999 is that they're too repetitious. But hey, there's joy in that sometimes.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. Though I think that was the point of the record. You couldn't possibly remix them or make them longer. It was meant for the DJ's. To me Dirty Mind was a masterpiece...or the beginning of conceptual albums that would come forth. 1999 was the first album that gelled with this concept..IMO. Christian Zombie Vampires

1999- Little Red Corvette - Delirious - Let's Pretend We're Married- D.M.S.R.- 1/2 Automatic- Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)- Free- Lady Cab Driver- All The Critics Love U In New York- International Lover- Overall rating- Definitely a masterwork. My third favourite Prince album ever behind Sign 'O' the Times and Purple Rain. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I actually think that Dirty Mind-era and album was the sign of things to come fo Prince. You know, if you look at the pictures of him in this era, he had the boots, the pants, the hair, and the rock and funk. But Dirty Mind is a masterpiece... A concept if you say, the beginning. He was finally in form. Check me out and add me on:

Yes, it's a Masterwork!
No, it wasn't his first! This boy is BAD! Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

That is all. I like the way you think. Purple Rain wasn't as satisfying because of the shortened songs. Like Gooey said, songs should be allowed to breathe. Prince, or somebody in his camp, knew that he had to shorten the songs and keep the album at a minimum length to hold the attentions of teens and casual music listeners. 1999 is THE masterwork in Prince's catalogue and International Lover is perfect where it is. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore wouldn't be a good album closer and really isn't progressive enough to fit on this album. It has a different feel

1999 was intended as a party anthem album. It was the fucking soundtrack for every house party back then, and that shit still gets people off their asses. The songs were supposed to be long.
The editing on MTV made alot of y'all some ADD muthafukkas. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

yes. we. DO. If 1999 was a compilation entitled "1999: The 12" Mixes" containing ridiculously long dance remixes of classic songs with sensible lengths, it would be great. I never thought I would tire of the groove in the 1999 title track, but at 6 minutes it totally wears out. "Mommy? Why are all these songs so damn long?"
