I've had this collection for a loooong time and only in the past two years has it shown signs of deterioration, which is why I didn't take it back sooner. It was just fine for a long time. And by deterioration, I don't mean scratches, I mean, parts of the CD are now CLEAR...there are spots of clearness all over all three CDs where pieces of the silver part of the CD have seemingly rotted away. I have no idea how this has happened except that I know that CDs DO deteriorate over time, particularly the earlier-made CDs which were of cheaper material I believe. So I guess I am alone with this problem so far...hmm... As for how I rate the set? 5 stars, definitely. You couldn't find a better collection, which is why I'm gonna have to buy another one at some point. . [This message was edited Sun Jul 4 1:41:28 2004 by mrdespues] You can't get rid of those spots. They go through the recording. This can also happen by scratching the top of the CD too. You won't even be able to take those and sell them. You'll probably have to buy a new set. Christian Zombie Vampires

But I used Brasso to let it restore, I mean no machine even this Brasso will get the scratches or spots out.... I understand Check me out and add me on:

This collection's great. I'd say just buy a new one. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

The following article on "cd rot" was posted on the Rolling Stone web-site about a week ago.

What I would like to know is can we sue the record labels? If you have older cd's you will notice a write up basically saying how great cd's are. Somewhere in all of that they say the cd will provide a LIFETIME of listening enjoyment. In my opinion 10, 15 or 20 years is not a lifetime. Do any of you guys have any lawyer friends? Maybe a class action lawsuit is in order? Unfortunately I am sure there is some legal loophole that they could slip out of. But for what we pay for cd's they damn sure should last a lifetime.

I have over 4,000 CDs, many from the mid '80's, and hve never experienced this problem. My Hits set is fine. If the metalic film substrate (which is entirely encased in plastic resin) deteriorates over time, then the manufacturer should replace it no matter how many years it's been. Early CDs actually stated as part of the packaging that the Compact Disc should last a lifetime if properly cared for. Of course, this claim is no longer used on CDs.
I've had CD "frost" on a few discs (mostly European) even brand new ones. This will clean up with amonia-free glass cleaner, with no adverse effects. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I've never had any trouble with any of my discs either, including ones that were manufactured in the mid-eightees. I do have a friend who owns a copy of SOTT that has suffered significant "rotting", but the disc still plays sixteen years later. [This message was edited Sun Jul 4 19:38:28 2004 by flipwilson]

Hmmm, thanks for all your informed comments, everyone.
Looks like I'm gonna have to either get a new set or be happy with the one I'm making! Fortunately the tracks unavailable any where else except The Hits/The B-Sides are still accessible on my discs, but the edits of tracks like Dirty Mind, et al are not....which doesn't bother me too much as I prefer the album versions anyway. Anyway, thanks for your advice, folks!

Here's how 2 see if u have a older or newer cd:
Take the cd with 1 hand between ur fingers and start binding it. If it shatters in2 a million pieces, it's a older cd. If it only binds n half without breaking, well then, it's a newer one. Either way, ur equally screwed!
