There's a evry familiar bass and synth line in this song, like the one he used to play on the 1994 - 1995 live versions of Days of Wild....

lol

I like this too, it's catchy

I love the booming drum, specially the drum break with "black/white, straight/gay, christian/muslim"

let's remind ourselves now, this is an on-line B-side

as b-sides go, this works for me.

and as someone else mentioned, I actually prefer this (on my 3rd listen) to some of what's on Musicology...

hey, it was .77, I am TOTALLY satisfied smile

....edit....

i just gave this the first listen since hearing it at berlin last week, and i have no idea why i was comparing it to "let's work", but i still like it! it wouldn't be out of place as a lovesexy b-side or as a song on sheila e's 1987 album...it's got that funky, fusion-y vibe going on, and i gotta say it took me on a sense memory ride to 1987-88 for a while...it's a nice way to spend six minutes. smile

surprisingly, i like it. when i saw the title, i thought "for christ's sake, here we go again." hardcore political just isn't his strong suit. (Dear Mr. Man comes close to being great, but lyrically, it's too vague and doesn't stand up to more than surface scrutiny if you're expecting it to make sense; yes, some very clever turns of phrase, but hardly any of it actually makes sense).

however, if he HAS to do political songs, then this is the kind he excels at. the "can't we all just get along" type. trite and cliched, yes. but he's much better at those (say, Free, Race, etc.) than actually addressing specific issues (Avalanche, Radical Man, etc.).

plus, the backing track is pretty good. the music sounds as if Life O' The Party and Dear Mr. Man had a baby. and that's actually a good thing.

I'm in the UK and I haven't had any surcharges on my account yet.

It's quite funny just how cheap these downloads are.

If you're in two minds about downloading these things, please don't be.

I've had no problems whatsoever with my card since the launch of the Musicology Store.

I know this has been discussed in great detail on the npgmc forum here, but just quickly, can I download this with my (very old) mac and hear it with quicktime or do I need special software to convert it?

You can download but you probably need the latest update for your Mac.Somebody at NPGMC solved his problem by doing this:

You CAN download on the mac, if you have the latest version of Mac Os and the latest version of Windows Media Player (for Mac), however you cannot burn these files to cd or convert them to Mp3. I use my wifes PC laptop to download the files, then burn them to audio cd, then bring the cd into itunes on the mac and convert to MP3

I purchased and downloaded the song. I'm on a older Mac G4, with OS Panther and WMP version 9, it doesn't work. It says: "Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and try again" sad

WOW! I cant believe he left this off the album, this song is AMAZING.

Reminds me of several things musically.

Girl 6

The drum line sounds VERY SIMILAR to Van Gogh - down to the bongos (whatever you call em) an all. It's only my 1st listen, but that same drum beat from Van Gogh may be there comletely with just a bunch of stuff over it.

I am proud to pay my .77cents for this song. Thank you Prince.

When you first play it, make sure you are connected to the internet - it needs to search the internet and acquire the license. At the end of the first play, it should let you backup the license to your hard-drive.

Hope that helps!

Yeah I like this song a lot, reminds me of some older stuff, good beat and the do-do-do-do-do-do chorus is fuckin' sweet. To me, better than some songs on Musicology for sure.

"Life O the party" isnt the kind of song I can imagine has a lot of sex razz
I've got a horrible image in my head now.
Shall download the song later on ,if its as good as the other b-side "Magnificent" (which was finer than most of the stuff on Musicology ) I'll be happy.

1. Make sure Internet Explorer is set as your default browser. (You can do this in "preferences" in Safari.)
2. Make sure the name of the file you downloaded ends with .wma -- I always shorten the million-character-long filenames when I download them on my Mac.

At the end is a longish musical outro with that sampled horns sound he uses a lot recently. With such a great horn section I don't know why he doesn't let them do something live-sounding instead of cut up and edited.

Those are REAL horns throughout the whole song! Blended with a synthesizer, my friend.

Well real horns blended with a synthesizer = sampled horns in my book biggrin

A 'sample' is a sound or live instrument recorded and then triggered using equipment other than the original source, ie a computer or keyboard. I'm sure the horns were real when they were recorded, but they've been so cut-up and re-edited they don't sound flowing anymore which I think is a shame when the horn section is so good.

I remember hearing somewhere that James Brown used every instrument on his songs like they were a drum, you know, quick punchy bits, even the guitar, and Prince is using the horns in a similar way on his current crop of records.

no. they're not sampled horns.

i'll say it again - there are LIVE horns throughout. there is ALSO a synth playing, but not a synthesized horn. all the horns are REAL and i presume, played by candy. trust me, i'm a horn player. no samples. real. not triggered. not re-edited or cut-up. real.

Thank you, I will do the same. I tried the test file and it was all gibberish so I will purchase and download to a PC. (My Mac is 10 years old - updating it would mean buying a whole new shebang! LOL)

o-tay folks, i just so happened to tune into newpowerradio this morning...lo and behold, the new track was playin. my thoughts on it...bleh. i listened to it, no expectations in mind, and it just...just fell flat on its face. this new spin on politrix and anti-war stuff from the same cat who did "sott" and "partyup", which are the two stand-out ills of the world/anti-war anthems in my mind...it did nothin for me, save for stickin some "doo-doo-doo" stuff in my head. whoever said this sounds like a nps-era track, you're absolutely right...it reeks of the stuff.

and speakin of that hook, for those of you who have been bitchin that prince should come up with some song with a catchy hook or chorus, then your wish has pretty much been granted with this one. yay for you.

2 outta 5 stars on this one...at least ol' boy tried. neutral
