Thanks for the responses. Any comments on the CD from anyone? Right now, it looks like I can get a new one cheaper on ebay. Before I buy, I wanted to get opinions about the CD from folks.

I love it! But you have to love The Rainbow Children if you wanna love this. Still, I think it's a great album. It was recorded from soundboard, so the only thing you hear from the audience is what comes through the mics onstage. That's a little weird for a live album, but the music is great. He does this comic thing on 'Adore' ("Don't smash up the ride... U smashed up the ride... where is it? Out on the driveway, c'mon let me C it. Oh no!") LOL

Any other opinions? I'm not one of the people that like TRC, so now I'm not so sure about this purchase. Thanks all.

I loved Rainbow Children but am personally bored to tears by this box set. I honestly haven't listened to it since the month I received it. Of course, the packaging is all pretty and it looks very nice in my Prince shelves so, for that reason I'm happy to own it.

I loved Rainbow Children but am personally bored to tears by this box set. I honestly haven't listened to it since the month I received it. Count me in for both loving TRC (despite it's awkwardness, like Jodie Foster in the original Freaky Friday) and being bored to muffuggin' tears by the ONA box set. So....lifeless, I don't know, and the ultra-cheesified crass commercialism tacked onto the end of a supposedly spiritual AnnaStesia, well.....it made me seriously doubt Prince's convictions, and it turned me off of one of my favorite Prince songs of all time. So yeah, I don't like it. In fact, the 2-disc "concert" part was stolen out of my car last winter with some other things and I just realized it a few months ago when I wanted to listen to Family Name. "Yes, I had slaves too!" - I do love that song, and I think if someone other than Prince chose the tracklisting and performances to use, it could have been a legendary set. As it is, it was the most disappointing thing he dropped since the last 3-disc set, Crystal Ball....which at the time of course was the most disappointing thing since the last 3-disc set before that, Emancipation. Okay, so there are 2 solid trends in Prince's release scheme: announced 7-cd sets are inevitably bullshit used to get you to put up money in the hopes that it will actually come out this time, and 3-disc sets tend to be disappointing.....and the weird thing is, all 3 of those sets could have been AMAZING, but... No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

I also am bored to tears by this album. Its funny cuz I loved the ONA shows (I saw 2 in LA) and was very excited for the set to come out yet I find it awful on CD. The aftershow part is bad too except for "Joy In Repitition" The only part of ONA LIVE I ever listen to is the solo piano section which contains a beautiful version of "Adore""Nothing Compares 2 U" and "The beautiful Ones" I skip everything else...

I have the box set...what I'm missing is the single disc made available on the website...
What's on that? What's that like? Keith/Kacey

I don't mind this box set. I think it was a nice effort. I don't think it's the "definitive" live Prince recording, though. I've heard many live boots that have more spirit and "you are there" vibe than this box set offers. There's something very restrained and self-conscious about these discs, like Prince didn't know when to put down the paintbrush and he gummed up a perfectly good painting that he should have quit working on many strokes ago. If that makes sense.
And a couple of standout jams aside, the "It Ain't Over" aftershow disc blows a chunk or two. I can't bear to listen to that Musiq crap thing they have included in that disc.

Musiq's contribution is pure crap with extra-dark crap topping, but the rest of the aftershow disc is cool -- I love the extended jams, and the jazzy take on "TBODP" is cool. The box set is called 'One Nite Alone ... Live!'.
It comprises three CDs, the first two titled 'One Nite Alone Live!' and the third called 'One Nite Alone ... The Aftershow: Ain't Over'. For those people who received it as part of the NPGMC 2003 subscription, it also included the album, 'One Nite Alone', a largely solo recording of mostly Prince piano compositions, some of which had previously been released as downloads as part of the previous year's NPGMC subscription. Retail and NPGMC store versions of the box set do not include this latter album. Club Memnbers from 2003 who joined earlier in the year had already received a copy of the album separately, so these people ended up with two copies of the album. . I agree that it's far from definitive. It's not even the most definitive ONA recording. This is the problem when artists themselves choose material for such a project. They tend to be too involved in the process too prissy about which version of which tune from which show should feature. That's why people go to the bootlegs where you get one complete show it flows better and (for me) you get a much better sense of what it was like to be there. The artist is often the worst person to compile a project like ONA live or indeed Crystal Ball. Just look at the mess that was The Beatles Anthology project where they pointlessly spliced together different takes of the same song. This is one of the main reasons why bootlegs still thrive IMO. if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron
