Anotherloverholenyohead / Girls And Boys This 7" is 18 years old today.
I wasn't a fan at the time - did either song get played on the radio much? Did you think it was a good single choice? Was Girls And Boys a good b-side choice? I love this little package of Anotherlover.../G&B, but I think G&B should have been a single in its own right. What other tracks from that era could have been a b-side for this single? I would go for Others Here With Us or Old Friends 4 Sale to really show P's versatility.

Girls and Boys was a single and hit in the UK. I remember it being played a lot on the radio at the time.

Anotherlover... was a top 20 R&B hit in the states so it did receive some airplay. The b-side, Girls & Boys was released as a single afterward overseas. I think that was a good choice. I love Girls & Boys, but I think it had a much too European sound to be a hit in the U.S.

Anotherloverholenyohead
Consistently one of my all-time favorite Prince songs. This is one track that I can never wear out, no matter how many times I've played it on repeat over the years. If you don't understand face-to-face, baby, I'll tell you down on my knees, yeah, yeah!! It's hard to get more classic-Prince than those two lines right there. The sentiment, the delivery, the background vocals, the merciless funk... Kills me every time. Happy birthday to a perfect moment in Princetory. The Normal Whores Club

I feel the exact same way about this song...sophisticated and pleading...never,never tire of this one.

They got the singles messed up with Parade.
There was a helluvah 1,2 punch in Kiss, Girls & Boys - I LOVE, love, love Mountains, but it didn't work as single #2 at all. I would've done: 1. Kiss 2. Girls & Boys 3. Mountains 4. Anotherloverholenyohead

Both AnotherLover and G&B are awesome.
Anoherlover has such a distinctive sound.....I was reading DMSR last night and it said something about a Roland Guitar Synth being used on them. And the Linn sounds really different on Another lover. I was listening to a rehearsal yesterday too where it sounds like Prince is teaching the band to play it..... he asks Eric to write the horn part....."like he did for Honest Man"..... and he's correcting Brownmark on the bass during a key change. It's interesting cuz he's telling BM which string and fret to play..... I dont know if he's being sarcastic or really teaching him which note it is, which is kinda surprising. On another note, I berieve Susannah co-wrote AnotherLover.... I know all the BG vocals are all here which is nice. And the phrase "I need x like I need a hole in my head" is a common Yiddish expression and I would bet Susannah influenced that title or at least exposed P to that expression (since she's Jewish). Just a thought.

Life Can Be So Nice is and will always be my favorite. Even tho it's on the backend of Girls and Boys, it's such a fantastic song on it's own, from the opening notes to the crescendo ending with all the singing going in twelve different directions... until they all yell "SHIT!" (which ain't "shit" actually, but that's what I always sang!!)
Anotherlover is also a killer song. Girls and Boys - i didn't dig that until I heard the SOTT live show bootleg, (umm, on the radio). And THEN I liked it. And of course, i got MY COVER of Life Can be So Nice. will I ever shut up about it? hell naw!! The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

They both got played in the Philadelphia market often...and I loved every minute of it. I would have loved to have heard Mountains played more but Urban Radio probably didn't think it was funky enough. I will do today what you won't, so tomorrow I can do what you can't.

Anotherlover is a better single choice than both Mountains (enjoyable but predictable unlike most P songs) and Girls & Boys. I love Life Can Be So Nice, but it too is certainly not a good choice as a single. In fact it would be a crime to break up any of the first songs through Venus de Milo into singles. Kiss and Anotherlover are the only great options to release as singles. Mountains is a nice song but it isn't good enough to attract anyone outside of the Purple kingdom's attention.
I originally bought the Parade album after searching for anotherloverholenyohead. I loved that song from the get.

Anotherlover is in my top 10 Prince songs. It sounded so dayum cool blasting threw the Alpines that my old boyfriend had in his Olds 98. Both of us in riding gansta lean with sunglasses on. (just like in the scene from Fresh Prince "summertime" video). Talk about old school funk! Mountains will always be my favorite from the PARADE album, but I ain't mad at these songs. Girls & Boys was the best song to release as a single for the Urban radio stations, since it's funk heavy and didn't cross over well for Pop 40. I like both songs. Jeux Sans Frontiers
