Help! Make a Prince mixtape for a rock-listening non-fan...

So I'm at the gym with a buddy of mine today...I have to say for the setup that I'm 30 and he's 20 because age DOES matter here...

and he's asking me how the Chicago show was and I'm telling him, and THEN...while in the middle of a rep with 200 pounds on the bench press, he has the nerve to say, "I don't think I know any Prince songs. I don't think I've ever heard him. Or maybe I have and I just don't know it."

I rack the bar and sit up as quickly as possible. "When Doves Cry? Purple Rain?," I say. Nothing. Blank face.

"AW, DAMN IT!" I yell in the crowded weight room. "I will be over by the end of the day tomorrow with a burned disc for you to get you going. And you're coming with me to the rescheduled Chicago show...my treat."

SOOOO...here's what I need from you. Given that my friend likes ROCK MUSIC, what Prince songs would you pick for a compilation to totally blow this guy away and get him into Prince? The songs don't need to be all a certain tempo, but I'm thinking that a majority of them should feature guitar. And their can be a few of the more r&b only-leaning tracks, but more should be rock.

Help me come up with a list. What would you put on the disc? If there are too many good suggestions, I'll do 2 dics for him. (He NEEDS 2 anyway, right? HA HA).

For starters...

Let's Go Crazy
The Ride
Purple Rain
? of U

I'm surprised you both included The Ride. It's allright but it's standard to below average blues when you look at real blues artists.

Seriously I would stick with the Hits. Just give him a copy of The Very Best of Prince. There is a reason that the hits were hits.

I feel passion from this song. It has very strong feelings in it. I think that even if you don´t know the lyrics, you can feel what it´s about, which is a rarity in today´s music industry. Not many songs played nowadays seem to have any feeling in them - in the music, not just lyrics...

These are some great suggestions...

I had already added "7" and "Controversy" to my list...

I appreciate the suggestion about just buying him "The Very Best of Prince," but I truly believe that the way to get someone to appreciate Prince (as anyone should biggrin ), given his vast catalogue, is to create a tailor-made collection like I'm doing based on the kinds of things the person already likes. Like I'm not going to put "P Control" on there just because I like it...

As for "The Ride," it might be relatively "standard blues" (it's in no way "below average" in my opinion), but I think what turns someone new on to Prince is their discovery that, damn, this guy can do a lot of different styles. To that end, even the inclusion of something like "Chaos and Disorder," a mediocre song to a hardcore fan, might be better for inclusion than, say, "Adore." Sounds like SHEER BLASPHEMY, I know! eek But again, you let THEM go...man this is COOL. Now I want the whole albums! It's just getting the guy's toes wet!

By the way, stupid me for forgetting "Shhh" -- especially after the Chicago show last week. Damn!

Keep the suggestions coming! I really appreciate it! (One caveat...I am just going to include "Gett Off" because it's always been a favorite. It has nothing to do with what he listens to, but it hints at some of his other works. Ha ha!)

Thanks for all of the suggestions...

I'll post a disc list when I'm done putting it together. I'll probably do it tomorrow morning (Thurs) so if you think I'm really missing something, please let me know. I do think it should span his whole career, with the emphasis on the rock stuff.

Cheers!

I made my brother 8 Prince CDs and that was some of the rock. Now when you get ready for the funk, just let me know. I made him a mix tape with some of the baddest funk jams of the same tempo and beat mixed (overlapped) the songs. It is kicking!

You've gotten some good suggestions. I would add either The Truth or
Don't Play Me, just to hear some acoustic guitar.

Some of my ROCK Prince:
Peach
Interactive
Chaos & Disorder
Bambi
When You Were Mine
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
Endorphine Machine
I'm Yours
Let's Go Crazy
Darling Nikki

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Prince is meant to confound. You know, always keep yo guessing. So choose songs back-to-back that make him go "wow--I wasn't expecting that."

Songs (In order)

1. Endorphanmachine
2. I like it there
3. Dolphin
4. Papa
5. So Far, So Pleased
7. I could never take the Place of Your Man
8. Medley ( Do U Lie? / When 2 R in Love / If I was Ur Girlfriend)

It's got just enough ROck in it to make it rocky, but it will definately confound him

I'd include Just My Imagination, from the Small Club Boot.

The Morning Papers.

Dolphin is a must

There's Others Here With Us

Witness
