Prince awaits tour opener in ... Saginaw?
Friday, March 1, 2002

{{{The record industry may have lost interest in Prince, who can't buy radio play and doesn't have a major-label deal anymore. But his fans sure haven't.}}}

The enigmatic soulman launches his new "One Nite Alone With Prince" tour tonight at Saginaw's Heritage Theatre, in a show that all but sold out the morning tickets became available.

Fans from as far away as France and England will be in Saginaw for the concert, according to Clyde Lee, who works for Saginaw promoter Snap Productions, which booked tonight's concert. "They bought the first 60 to 70 tickets," he said, sounding a little befuddled.

But that should tell you something about the devotion of Prince's fans. The hard-core fan simply can't get enough of him and his innovative mix of rock, funk, R&B, soul, blues and jazz. Too prolific for his old record company, Warner Bros., Prince has weathered the major-label storm by forming his own NPG Music Club, an online fan club through which he releases new songs, such as last December's "She Loves Me 4 Me," and albums, including the recent "Rainbow Children" CD. A recent posting on the site promises four more releases this year, the second for the music club.

"One Nite" will be a departure from recent tours, including last year's brief "A Celebration" tour, which opened in Detroit last June and highlighted his plethora of hits, and the previous "Hit and Run" tour, extended jam sessions that in less than a year saw Prince fill Detroit's State Theatre, Pine Knob Music Theatre (now DTE Energy Music Theatre) and The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Expect a jazzier feel to this show, which will include songs from the new album and a five-piece band that includes James Brown sax legend Maceo Parker. "Catering to a sexy, mature audience, the jazz-tinged show will feature selections that Prince has never before performed ... as well as classic hits he hasn't played in years," promises a recent press release.

Though he rarely gives interviews, it's obvious from the few public comments he's made, the content of his Web site and the bitter, prolonged battle he waged with Warner Bros. for artistic freedom that Prince is not happy with radio and the record industry that have shunned him and other artists like him. That same press release (which, no doubt, he approved and maybe even wrote) promises "no bungee cords, pyrothechnics or backup dancers."

it's actually ; "My naked body on the floor, is all u realy need 2 know, whatever u do just don't say no, come on baby let's go go..." and Prince wrote it for Nona Hendryx (ex-wife of the late Jimi), back in 1988 or 1989 i think. U can find it on her latest "Best Of... Transformation" cd. Don't know which version is on here though. You can easily find Prince's version on the net. It's different than nonoa's version, but i prefer her version more. She's got that hot summereve vibe in there, with greazy horns and sexy drums...
info about the "Best Of Album..." by Nona Hendryx, look here ;
