Prince talks to Tavis This Thursday, late night on PBS
(Feb. 17, 2004) *Prince is usually a reclusive individual. But every once in a while he emerges from his normal haunts a graces the public with a performance and interview or two.
Last time he stepped out was at the Grammys and now he's stepping out again as a guest on the PBS talker "The Tavis Smiley Show." He'll be in the house this Thursday, February 19.

Recorded in Los Angeles last Thursday, Prince gave his perspectives on his longevity, on the state of the music business, on the provocative content in music, on the public’s perception of him and on his spiritual evolution.

The 18 minute segment opened with a solo instrumental performance and concluded with Prince singing a new composition.

“Anytime you have to rely on raciness alone, you’ll get the audience you deserve, ” Prince told Tavis. “Cursing was cool when nobody was dong it, just a couple of people. If everyone wears the same clothes, then it ain’t cool. You’re trying to be different. One can’t be different in being racy today. It’s not interesting anymore. Sexiness was in the mind, in your imagination.”

look at Tavis...he trips me out the way he does his hand to his mouth like that, lookin all intense

interesting - since it said "solo instrumental", Wendy must be performing the new track with him.

sounds like yet another weak interview.

one thing about prince being previosuly against giving interviews - i see why now. it was in his interests, cos he hardly has anything interesting to say to journalists, well not on TV anywya.

tavis smiley is one of the world's worst interviewers. he tries so desperately to sound intellectual and, to me, it always comes off like that in living color skit...you know the one, with damon wayans in jail using multi-syllable words. and he always puts his racial spin on things. i know, i know, that's his schtick...but it is so annoying.

but, you know i'll be tuning in to see p getting some press!

The show airs on CH21. WLIW at midnight in NYC! WNET is not airing Travis that night!

But seriously, Tavis is an excellent journalist who fills a much-needed void on the airwaves, especially breakin' down some real issues, including racism, and often welcoming guests that get short shrift elsewhere. I'm glad he's there.

now, don't get it twisted. i didn't say it doesn't exist. i'm saying that tavis brings up color in everything and makes non-race related issues into race issues. its his style of reporting. i have listened to the tom joyner morning show for years and i've seen tavis's interviews a bunch of times. i think he tries way too hard to be 'down'. its like he over compensates because he knows he's very wealthy. he was once talking about some convention he went to in LA (he was talking about it on the joyner morning show) and he kept mentioning how only very wealthy people were there and how he needed to keep it real. oh, it was sickening how he was trying to remind people that he's 'down'. every other phrase began with "well, you know how we do..." or "you know, as a brother..." or "being of the darker persuasion..." and it was so played out. there are appropriate times for that style of conversation, believe me i don't doubt that. i just think when you manage to bring it into every conversation you have it gets very boring.
