tavis smiley is one of the world's worst interviewers. he tries so desperately to sound intellectual and, to me, it always comes off like that in living color skit...you know the one, with damon wayans in jail using multi-syllable words. and he always puts his racial spin on things. i know, i know, that's his schtick...but it is so annoying.

but, you know i'll be tuning in to see p getting some press!

that sounds funny. i need to read a transcript or hear him interviewing prince now... if anyone has an old excerpt that would be handy!

Well, I'm just happy the man is doing an interview. Tavis Smiley isn't all that bad, no matter how exaggerated he may be. He does tons of work for African American youth. The last conference he did for Black youth, was extremely successful. He had speakers such as Cornel West, Toni Morrison, and other prominent black leaders talk to and answer questions. It was great because it showed the black youth of America that there's more in their future besides, being in a jail, a rapper, or ball player. With Prince's current state of mind, I'm not surprised, and pleased he chose Tavis' show. At least we'll hear some indepth Q&A, and not shallow ones like; "who does your make-up?"

Prince is making some public appearances, we don't have to bootleg to catch a glimpse of him this week. Let's enjoy it.

have to disagree with you here. i think he has a broad knowledge of many things. i can't wait to watch this interview because he is probably one of the few people who will have the facts straight about his dispute with warner brothers, he will ask questions about the music and not about hype, and will facilitate an intellectual conversation. unlike that goofball jay leno.

i have heard tavis do interviews about entertainment, politics, iraq war, universities, etc. he knows his shit.

Maybe you did not see the last interview Tavis did with Prince on BET. Came off pretty good.

eye missed that. What was that 1 about?

Best I can remember, it was Nov. 98. He started by apologizing to the fans in L.A. due to the last minute cancellation of his concert at the forum. I think he had injured his knee. I wish I could remember much else, but Prince definitly talked about his npg web site (pre-npgmusicclub, of course) and how he can make more money selling music directly etc.
I remember Tavis nodding in agreement when Price mentioned that the internet was exploding as the new money-making indsutry, and that African-Americans were "getting left behind again".

Well, that's it. The show should be interesting.
Peace

You can only put a racial spin on something if racism did not exist!!! You could always watch BET if you want to look at living color like skits (LOL)

now, don't get it twisted. i didn't say it doesn't exist. i'm saying that tavis brings up color in everything and makes non-race related issues into race issues. its his style of reporting. i have listened to the tom joyner morning show for years and i've seen tavis's interviews a bunch of times. i think he tries way too hard to be 'down'. its like he over compensates because he knows he's very wealthy. he was once talking about some convention he went to in LA (he was talking about it on the joyner morning show) and he kept mentioning how only very wealthy people were there and how he needed to keep it real. oh, it was sickening how he was trying to remind people that he's 'down'. every other phrase began with "well, you know how we do..." or "you know, as a brother..." or "being of the darker persuasion..." and it was so played out. there are appropriate times for that style of conversation, believe me i don't doubt that. i just think when you manage to bring it into every conversation you have it gets very boring.

-----
I guess we have to agree to disagree on this one. Tavis just talks like a lot of African-Americans that I know. He is intelligent and I am sure he ask Prince some great questions.
Oh keep in mind that Tavis was a polical science major and tried to run for office in L.A. before he got into the media. So he came to a carreer in media a little late.

Ok, this is goofy.

I'm at the studio tonight, right?
We don't keep a TV around here for several reasons. Being productive is the main reason.

Anywho...
There's this old black and white set upstairs in storage. I bring it down tonight thinking surely I'll be able to get PBS.

NOT!
well not really.
It comes in on the UHF channel under two channels.
One gets audio only
The other gets Video only.

WTF?

The sony computer has a TV tuner but is set to recieve input through cable which we don't have here.

Maybe I can wire the antenna from the B/W set through an adaptor to the computer??

always so much work to be a fan!

ok, this is getting down right comical.

I just took an extension cord and ran the TV outside to the driveway. If I was anywhere else but south florida, that would be pretty nuts this time of year.

No. It's still nuts to be watching PBS in the driveway in a "not so good" neighborhood at midnight!

Now I'm questioning my fan level to obsessive!

mkegrn2, I was pissed at first also, I turned on the PBS station and Harry was on and then I remembered that with the Satelite I can go to different cities,I watched it on the Boston station. I must say that this is the best interview that I have ever seen Prince do as far as answering the questions in a way that we could all understand where he was coming from. He said many things that were right on. And the song at the end with Wendy was great. They kicked some serious ass.
