Jay-Z on why he named 'The Black Album'

in the Jan. 19 copy of People magazine, there is a short interview with Jay-Z. On titling his latest The Black Album:

"i heard that Prince had made an album called 'The Black Album.' it was super-artistic. so i was going to make this album my artistic one."

I know I can't be too objective about someone who has made millions of dollars making music. But has Jay-Z ever listened to Prince's Black Album? I don't think so. He wouldn't know it was super-artistic. It offends me that he can use the name because he has a huge fan base. However, the relation to Prince isn't even respected by his fan base. All they know is that Jay-Z named his album the "Black Album." Jay-Z doesn't even know why Prince made the Black Album. So why copy the name? I'm not putting down hip-hop but give Prince more respect than saying "I heard that Prince had made an Album..."

I'm also upset that Jay-Z is dating Beyonce. Makes me feel like some fish in the sea.

lol, to be fair jay z has namechecked prince a bunch of times. as for this comment, seems a little odd really. he drew up prince on his list of dream collaborations. and said having worked with MJ working with prince would wrap up his career. so why he wouldnt know of the black album is beyond me

I'd rather see Jay Z (or any other artist for that matter) give props to Prince than to diss him. Even if one person from hova's fanbase decided to check out Prince's music because of the name check, then that's positive!

As a musician, i find it interesting to see that Jay Z thinks u can just pump out an "artistic album" whenever u want. Any real musician knows that u can only make music that comes from ur own heart and soul, and if the listening public decide that it is an "artistic" album, they will do so. Prince didnt set out to make The Black Album to delibrately give it cult status. He simply made an album, and due to circumstances, it became the well sought after bootleg that it did.

I may be wrong, but I doubt that a guy like Jay Z has talent/musicianship to do something ´artistic´

You are not wrong. Jay Z is a talentless loser and I have always been puzzuled by his success. The guy has a annoying draging voice and no stage presence. Good buy and good riddence.

- Well, the Beatles released an ´White album´, so the idea is not completely original

Actually, in both cases, neither album was titled that. The "White Album" is actually just titled "The Beatles", while the fans took to calling it by its popular moniker. Prince's album has no title whatsoever. Again, it was the fans who chose to call it that.

The only other band I can think of with a "black" album is Metallica (and, again, that's not the actual title. Fans chose to call it that due to the black cover). Of course, there is the original "Black" album: Smell The Glove by Spinal Tap!

I don't get the scale of his success either, but his song 'Guns & Roses' with Lenny Kravitz, slams! Yeah, he completely jacked the song 'Arco Arena' from Cake, but I think the lyrics and chorus give it a little more kick.

Dont get me wrong .. I love Jay-Z album .. it reminds me of
Reasonable Doubt .. but someone need to explain to some of these artist .. know your history before you give props or elaborate .. If Jay new that the Black Album represented alot
of things that was going on in Prince's life @ the moment
1) the break up w/ the revolution
2) his break up w/ Susannah
3) the emurgence of rap in the main stream and his view that
hip hop was not music and that they were spoiling the art...
The song dead on it .. depicted just that .. telling rappers that this is not music to him at the time but stealing .. so it is ironic that jay would name the album after a body of work that was infact not infavor if his genre at that time

Jay Z wanted 2 reflect on his Black Album being his last album. Time will tell whether it will be his last. His "fade 2 black"... his curtain call. His artistic ability is judged by his fans, just like Prince's music is judged by Prince's fans. A Jay Z fan doesn't care about how much talented a guy like Prince is or visa versa. Jay Z does his thing 4 Hip Hop, and it's good that he can appreciate the music of others and maybe educate his fans about Prince. Music can't grow unless U embrace all of it...

Metallica did it first when they released an album in 1991 called ~The Black Album~.

See, here's where I must disagree. I think Hip-Hop is in a pretty sad state these days. Jay-Z is so cookie cutter its not even funny, as is much of Hip-Hop today. Those of us old enough to remember when Public Enemy hit the scene, or when Dre blew up, can't help but look at the current climate as pathetic. Everyone's just doing the same ol' thing these days, rappin about how much money they have, or how everyone's "hatin'" on them. Howzabout actually writing ABOUT something???
