Family Jamm Thoughts

Shelia E (and all others who organized) put on a GREAT show. Having flown in from NY hoping for the "unexpected" to happen (with all the possibilities one could wish for), I left with a smile on my face and warmharted from the love that poured from the stage. Shelia stole the show with every appearence she made.

Without mentioning the star performances, the message was clear throughout...there are abused children out there that are in need. The list of needs is too long but at the top of the list are people like Shelia and EVERYONE involved in that benefit who donated their time for nothing more than love. No one came out to promote a new album. They came for the cause... when was the last time that happened?

Selfishly, I came for the "unexpected" to happen. I return home tomorrow aware of how fortunate I have been. To be one of the lucky one's who was never a victim. This abuse is real. It's out there. It's always been out there. Last nights show is not going to end it (unfortunatly) but it will (and has) made a difference already. I'm not going to need Family Jamm II to occur for my next contribution to this problem. NY has enough of it's own victims for me to take the time to make a difference. Just like everyone who showed the love last night, I going to do what I can.

Thank you Shelia, and EVERYONE who lended a hand. xoxoxox

It's kinda sad that the original poster was inspired to mention the real problem more than the show yet all you lot care about is whether some washed up old has been with an ego problem turned up.

Most likely because we want news/details of a Prince-type event, not necessarily a PSA on how lucky one has been in life to not be abused. That has nothing to do with an actual news item on Prince's music. Ain't shit sad about it!

I was there on the first row section C seat 9. Before the gig we got to take pics with everyone and afterward. There was even an afterparty in the Forum Lounge were all the stars hung out and talked and autographed everything. Let's say Jill Jones (sang only Mia Bocca) is the tallest of all Prince's women. I am 5'6" and with my two inch heels, 5'8" and the twins heads were at nose along with Apples (sang only Take Me With You) and Lisa a little taller. Sheila, the height of the twins, Carmen came too my shoulder.

I begged the Wendy and Lisa to come back to Chicago and perform. They said there Park West show was the best. Speaking of Wendy and Lisa, Hey Derek! SH, come to Prince Night on the 28th because I had Wendy autograph my program to you and Lisa signed it as well.

By the way, High-Yellow, DID NOT SHOW UP! He was in L.A. and John Blackwell was in the audience. Can we say, Prince is in for some karma excitement. I just hope his too precious ass shows up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction. But, Wendy carried the show by singing all Prince's songs (I forgot the opening song, Pop Life, America, Raspberry Beret, Anotherlover, Purple Reign, Baby I'm A Star).

Patty LaBelle sang one song, Yo Mister. Chaka Khan sang one song, I Feel For You. And Madhouse peformed four songs, including six (Sheila E-drums, Eric Leeds-sax, Dr. Fink-Keys, and the house bass player)

Sheila E did perform The Glamourous Life, A Love Bizarre, Bell of St. Mark, 17 Days, and I forget the others.

But, my boy Raphy came from Paris and the four kids from Japan that Jerome pulled on the stage in the end to dance.

On a serious note, I thank God I did not have abusive parents, come from a dysfunctional home, or was abused by anyone. I consider myself one of the lucky ones.

Well, I have to go to the airport and return to Chi-town. Wednesday is a big day - The Return of the King! LOTR.

Great show!, Sheila caried the show well.
She is an incredible musician and a wonderfull person, she always kept spirits up, never letting the fact the Morris Day (which she impersonated for the Time.cute!) or Prince didnt show,EVERYBODY performed for free! It was good people getting togother for a worthy cause.

On another serious note, I was beat up pretty bad growing up and spent two years in foster homes for abuse...But it was Prince and the others of the Purple Sound that helped me make it through those tough times...His music really was my only escape. U know what's ironic? Everytime my dad found a Prince cassette hidden in my room he would tear it up and beat the crap out of me...I got to be a pro sneaking in2 the trash and splicing my tapes back 2gether..."Dirty Mind-Head, what the HELL is this?!!!" The years have softened the memories and I can laugh at it now but in all seriousness, it was his music that helped a boy survive with his sanity intact...

I was impressed w/The Family's performance. I wasn't expecting much after viewing the dvd of their only live appearance at 1st Ave. It was a musically satisfying set. River Run Dry, The Screams of Passion, Nothing Compare's 2 U, High Fashion, Mutiny. They were the bomb! Jerome was cool, he even strolled down to floor. Eric's sax was right on the money. That cat's sound gives you eargasms.

The madhouse set was pleasing, but short. They played Six, Ten, and Thirteen. Nevertheless I finally got to see them live. Like other's, I too hoped for the unexpected, but also left feeling uplifted.

The Family was very very impressive, Wendy came to see from the first row her sister on stage, it was a very magic moment.
Apolonia sounded great and pulled a nice one.
CK and PL did a 1 song appearance too (no surprise there).
Sheila E was VERY impressive and clearly made fun of Morris for not showwing up by saying "sorry gota go, i gota make $ so i cant be here" or something like that. But her impersonation was fun and a highlight of the show.
The Revolution showed why P sounded so good during their time with him, and how great P's songs are. Wendy was in control!
The audience was great! the finale was great too! the artists all thanked the fans and the auction winners. They were very approachable. It was a unique opportunity.
There must have been at least 5 people filming with camcorders (if you're one of them please send me an org note!)
Sheila did pull something big that night.
One more thing Prince and his charities were in the program as sponsors and donnors. So even if he did not show up, he did contribute thru his talent and his money - some of us just wish he would also have given 15mn...

I wish I'd have been there...

Can't believe anybody really thought Prince would show up though. Unless it's his idea and his band under his control, with his name (or symbol) in the biggest letters, preferably with Larry Graham nearby, there's no way he'll do anything.
Besides, I'm sure he doesn;t need to remind people of a time when he was innovative and inspired and had a band with personality. Afterall, when you just put out "NEWS" and before that "The Rainbow Children" it must be pretty embarassing to show people how good you USED to be and just what you've sunk to nowdays. Oh well...maybe one day he'll come back to making decent music that is truly original inspired by deep thought instead meandering instrumentals or anti-semetic nonsense and crap out of the Jehovah's Witness handbook or Larry Graham's mouth.

I'm just posting in the moment right now and will probably be over it in the morning. But I have lost even more for Prince finding out he didn't show. I'm not as disappointed even with Morris because he made it clear money was his priority and he may not have as much as some of us would like to think he has. Not to mention he lives in Atlanta. But to KNOW Prince was actually in town and didn't make a appearance is shameful and he SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF!!! I have been aware that Prince is not a perfect specimen and have taken note of how many people leave his camp bitterly, but to not even make a presence especially since he was actually in town, is just a new low. Shame on you Prince. pissed

By far one of the best Prince nights of my life. And Prince wasn't even there and I didn't even give a damn. Wendy kicked ass fronting the Revolution. God I love Wendy and Lisa.

Jill Jones rocked as the opener...

Sheila kicked ass, as always...

By far the most impressive and most memorable performance was The Family...oh my god I was in fucking heaven. Susannah and St.Paul were quite amazing considering it was their second performance ever...Susannah looked great with her short, bleached blond hair.

Too many cool things to go into right now...I'm sure you all will get a full review...

The thing that made quite the impression was of course the cause which to be honest I really didn't even know was about child abuse. Sheila talked about having been a victim of child abuse and how music had been her refuge. The connection I made was--even though I was not a victim of child abuse--music was my escape. And I can clearly see how, in the words of Sheila, music is a perfect form of therapy.

I clearly intend on looking more into the LilAngelBunny foundation and just helping out in general with the crisis of child abuse...

Much Love to all the fans I met..RDHULL, Brian, NewPowerSoul, David from London, and many others...

As I said on another thread somewhere:

Prince is a fucking self-absorbed, little human Pez dispenser, pixie-assed fuck for not showing. It was a benefit for abused kids you little dwarf fuck!!! I hope the bible study with Larry was worth it. What happened? Did you get into a lengthy discussion about how women should be subserviant and lose all track of time?

Get over yourself. Dick.

Many colors mixed together brings about a color. The musicians that helped form the sound as we know it maybe just as much a part of it than the color, as he would like us to see it. The only color he wants to create now is green and its not music! Its your new baby bib! or you new doggy shirt! They have probs at NPG creating cds..but you do not see posts like: "Sorry we have problems with production of the new NPG bracelets, Until we can fix the problems we are putting the bracelets on hold!" What a joke this whole NPGMC! I can't believe Prince would not show up to help the cause. I suppose praying to Jehovah brings one more satisfaction. Or maybe the color green comes into the equation?

ADDITION.. (addition to review part) Yes, I feel for the good of the lil bunny foundations message, but no one else is posting highlights.. Sorry

The first song The Revolution played was "Mountains". It was just simply awesome (Eric played with the Revolution, hell, he played with most of them. I think Eric might have been held back on Pop Life as he has played it with Prince a bunch on recent gigs. The other non mentioned Sheila bit was "Holly Rock!" Way too funky for those who never heard her do this live before...She also kicked in Alphabet Street and turned the Cat rap in to the rap she does on
"Beautiful Night".. (Real frikin' fast, better than on Small Club...

Ok, highlights...
Everytime Sheila was on stage.. She was in rare form...
Sheila plays Morris Day as only Jellybean and Jerome showed.
Look, she came out in the pimp suit, painted on mustache, and doorag on her head. Did the steps with Jerome..2 Funky..

Jill... OMG..She is more beautiful then ever (did I mention Sheila, who stated she is looking for a husband. I'm signing up.), and Carmen(married recently, who blushed when everyone kept telling her to get on the mike and chanted the words to Go Go Dancer. She gave props to the old Glam Slam LA Folks who took in those gigs...), and ...
ok back to Jill...
She totally kicked on Mia Bocca. She should have done more tunes. That girl needs some attention!!! I would have sold my soul to hear her do Trip And A Half!. Very talented...

The Family performed like they wanted to be signed to the Paisley Park Label...again! Mutiny was probably the funkiest gig of the night... (true?)...

Patty picked up the lyric sheet mid way through "Yo Mister", and said she didn't know the lyrics then or now...
But, she kicked it off in a utmost funky style that sounded like the recording!!!

Chaka was cool with I feel for you.. We can all say we saw a lot of Chaka in that dress!! (LAWD!)

Madhouse was primo funky (minus Levi and Prince)..
Although, I believe Matt did play some on 10 and 13 on the record...
I was not really hooked about this gig initially (what was I thinking?), but when Levi and Eric signed up, I was there.
Seeing Eric last year at the Vegas gig and at BB Kings Blues Club was the Highlight of Prince gigs I've been waiting for. I THINK LEVI IS THE ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED MUSICIANS THAT PRINCE HAS PLAYED WITH...Did I state that loud enough...I'm too tired to go into it, but ask if you want...I would have liked to see that initial Madhouse Quartet together, but oh well. (It was still funky!)...

Last notes..
When Wendy kicked the first couple cords of Purple Rain on the guitar, it floored everyone! Eric took the end guitar solo part on the sax.. Beautiful...

Wait, I forgot, One more thing!. ALAN LEEDS INTRODUCED THE REVOLUTION!... Not with me?.. Ok. Check it, Alan, Eric's Brother, used to be the Road Manager for James Brown, and on a good day, He was the President Of Paisley Park Records.. Dig?... Pretty cool for Alan to show..

Everyone always trips on the associated artists. (Me too!) This was definitely a first.. Sheila says she would like to do this every week. Wendy said she would do it every year if it comes to be.

Don't miss the next one Prince.. Chicken Head! (my brotha..)
That would be a shame. I hope John Blackwell took some video so you can check it out. I doubt you'd miss it again.

On the one.

On the less indulgent note, I'd like to state that all the members of the NPG Music Club should bear down and follow suite to keep with this charity ongoing.. Not just 'cause we want some true gigs, but, because It is a worth while cause that should be recognized. It really impressed me that no one left their seats while the folks representing the charity told their stories.... It was a beautiful night.

I arrived late, at @ 8:30. As I walked around the entire friggin Forum trying to find the entrance, I could hear the Family playing "Screams of Passion", so me and my friend sprinted the rest of the way and got in before they finished the song. I must agree with those earlier statements...VERY impressed with the Family. If you ask me, they were the best performance of the night...and Susannah can sure shake that ASS!!!

The Revolution's set was great, but I had to shake my head through "Purple Rain". I dunno...it just didn't seem right. I kept waiting for Prince to surprise everyone and come out for the guitar solo, even though Wendy had already said he wasn't there, then Eric played the guitar solo on the sax. I don't think I've ever heard it played that way...pretty interesting.

Remember Wendy's comments? "There's still a lot of love up here...We're gonna keep reuniting till we can't reunite anymore...If we sing loud enough maybe Prince's ears will start burning..."

COME ON, PRINCE!!! 2004 could be the most awesome year!

Last nights Family Jamm was an amazing night.
And believe it or not I was glad Prince did not show up.

The night started a little slow. Jill Jones sang Mia Bocca. She was a little rusty. But that might not be fair. It is always hard going first.

Then Appollonia sang Take me with U. I was close enough to her to tell you that she did NOT lip sync. She looked good. And sounded good too.

Then Madhouse played. Minus Prince. Shelia, Dr. Fink and Eric were great. The bass player who played Prince's part was also good. But I didn't catch his name.

Then a miracle happened. Even though I like The Family Cd. I've always thought of them as The Time (lite) I was wrong. St. Paul was on fire. It was easy to see why Prince thought he could handle his own band.

Chaka Kahn had fun with I Feel 4 U.
And Miss Patti La Belle did her one Prince hit Yo Mister. She had to use a lyric sheet.
But she told the audience that it was okay cause she had to use a lyric sheet when she recorded it.

Shelia had a blast during her set. Holly Rock was my favorite. Her drumming was sharp. And the band was tight. She kept stopping them on a dime.

Later a mini version of the Time played with Shelia dressed as Morris. And yes I believe Jesse Johnson was there. Carmen introduced him.

But the highlight was The Revolution. The Grammy award winning Alan Leeds did the intro. Wendy led the band. And they sang mostly songs from Around the World in a day Cd. Every song sounded great and I noticed people around me getting misty eyed. Wendy sent a lot of love out to Prince. She asked us to sing til his ears burned. And I hope he heard us.

Then another miracle happened. They played Purple Rain. I was nervous about this. How were they going to do the guitar solo. And how about the screaming at the end. Wendy is great but she can not scream like Mr. Prince. Well I didn't need to worry. Eric Leeds did the guitar solo on sax. It was the best thing I've ever heard him play. And the screaming? Miss Patti walked back out on stage and raised the roof.

The concert was 3 hours but it went by in a flash. I thank Shelia. And now I'm trying to think of a way I can help her foundation.
