Prince in need of cash says misinformed Honolulu critic

A hit-heavy show possible when Prince plays Hawai'i
By Derek Paiva
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

Prince has said he's retiring some big hits from live shows.

Can U spare some cash 4 Prince?

After annoying concert audiences for years with truncated live versions of his most famous hits, the enigmatic 2004 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee appears to have had a change of heart ... or finances.

Prince shows in October in Hong Kong and Australia featured set lists heavy on full-length hits from his most popular albums; in particular, the "Purple Rain" soundtrack.

Prince fan sites have since been abuzz with rumors that the hit-driven concerts (including his Tuesday concert on O'ahu and Dec. 19 show on Maui) are primers for a larger worldwide tour in 2004. The artist's promise of retiring the songs from live performance in the near future has also fueled talk that Prince is looking to quickly feather his retirement nest egg with the guaranteed cash generated by a "greatest hits" tour.

Still, don't look 4 me if U get the live entirety of "Crystal Ball" instead.

A journalist (as opposed to an internet poster) has a responsibility to post the facts. Unless you know of a financial difficulty, why would You mention it. I think after last years tour, that Prince is probably in pretty decent shape.

Either YOU are a journalist or a complete candid soul nod

Do you REALLY believe everything a journalist says?

Do you believe in lawyers as well?

Wake up..At least you'll be happy in your fantasy world.

No offense intended

I see this journalist do nothing more than suggesting he might be in need of cash. There is no hard statement made that Prince is broke.
I agree with your comment that he is probably in pretty decent financial shape, considering tickets generally costed 100-150$.

No Doubt this guy is an idiot who probably believes Prince has not made a dime since Purple Rain.

Even on a bad year Prince is capable of generating up to $10Mil. May not be Bill Gates territory but it sure would be nice by me. His net worth including property, cash, and publishing should be over $100mil. Publishing and Paisley Park alone should be worth about $40 mill.

Prince has mde more since he TOOK OVER his Career! He even said with Emancipation & Crystal Ball (alone) he made more then his whole career under Warner Brothers!

*He made $23+ Million off those 2 projects

*Include all the single disks if they sell 100,000 copies he makes about $2 Million (more or less)

* Rave Album he made $9 Million

** Plus all his tours,merch & NPGMC

The guy is making some nice coin!!!

NOW how he spends it..who knows?? But doing a "Greatest Hits" Tour (full version) songs.. The dude is going to make more money!

This "journalist" is not misinformed...he is just an idiot. This guy certainly failed any logic class he ever took.

As far as how much money Prince made before and after WB, it is extremely unlikely that he made more money post-WB than before. Big deal if you get a larger % of album sales if no one is buying them.

It is absurd to say that Prince made $23 million from Emancipation and Crystal Ball...I'd say it was maybe 1/10th of that...maybe a bit more, but no way $23 million!

Are you sure about these figures? I would reckon he sold about 100.000 copies of Crystal Ball worldwide, for probably a profit of 30$ each - makes 3 Mill to me... how did he get the other 20 mill.?? Rave album 9 million - you gotta be joking...
Agreed he makes money on the tours...
The club - well, how many members are there? 10.000? Times 100 $ makes 1 Mill...

certainly not bad...

When Prince was on Tavis Smiley's show (when it was on BET), Prince himself said he made more on Crystal Ball with 80,000 orders on line (that's not counting what was sold at Record Stores). He said he made more money on Crystal Ball than he did on Purple Rain. It is completely feesible. He charged $50 for Crystal Ball and he had no middle man on the 80,000 ordered on line. So he brought in $4,000,000 gross on that album.

A music critic in Honolulu, (thats a joke). Hawaii is so out of touch with music that most people are not even aware that Prince is still making music, It seems that when ever someone goes against the system, those that are in the system feel that it is their duty to help the rebellious one attain less success and will twist and add things to try to make it harder for the individual, This wanna be critic should report on things that he is aware of, like Hawaiian music, jawaiian music and reggae music. (The music in the Islands). The comments about his finances are not warranted, How could he know, The added comments is just a way to cause doubt and try to make the casual fan stay home. (it doesn't have to be true, just cause a little damage, MJackson's latest accusation)And as always we have those here debating about his finacial status, just plain ignorance. I guess everyone wants to be a critic, if you are going to be a critic then at least stick to the music and please let the music speak for itself, Besides success is not achieved by how much money one makes. Success is defined by the individual's definition of succes and obviously Prince's definition of success is not what the system says other wise he would not have left it.
How you gonna get my back when you fronting.

If Prince ever went broke and live performances wasn't paying him enough, all he has to do is release his vault songs.

I agree that those numbers are a joke. Also, I doubt he made $30 average profit on Crystal Ball. It only sold for about $30 in the story and the retailers probably only pay $15 each for them or somewhere around there. Maybe he made a good profit on the $50 initial Internet sales, but there weren't that many and he still had to pay to manufacture them and ship them out, etc.

I remember him saying that he made more from Emancipation than Purple Rain. That is hard to beleive, but I guess it's possible. However, he certainly made lots more in the Purple Rain era with all the buttons, posters, hats, shirts, etc, etc. that Warner Bros. probably licensed for him.

In one sense, I'm glad that he doesn't sell many records any longer, because he certainly has bills to pay, and to pay them I figure he's got to tour! So as long as he needs the money, we'll be getting to see him live. I'm not saying he doesn't like to perform live, but the need for $$$ probably gets him motivated to launch a tour sometimes.

Yeah, he's "capable" of generating $10 million but only if he toured constantly. He sure isn't doing it by record sales/royalties. So unless he has a great stock portfolio, he sure isn't making close to $10mil a year if he doesn't tour. Of course he may have other investment that we don't know about, but I doubt they could be that great.

virtually every dollar of every sale goes back to NPG records which in essence is Prince himself...the need for huge sales is no longer relevant to him as every CD he makes reaps huge profits right back to Paisley Park...this is why he is not driven by the need to produce commercial hits & can continue to follow the music as a form of art (NEWS for example) as still earn a more than decent living...I would be very surprised if he did not earn at least $10M just from royalties from past releases without even touring...but then again he tours most years...the Greatest Hits Tour is really Prince trying to draw a line in the sand to say to fans "this is it guys" after this dont even mention Purple Rain..coz it's not where i'm at...ofcourse he is going to make alot of money during next year with this tour...but he needs it to concentrate on the art of his future or present projects...I wish these reporters would just get off his back about his motives.
