If anyone honestly thinks that NEWS is some sort of "risky" jazz that just might not suit someone's taste, they need to listen to more jazz! lol What bullshit...NEWS is tiresome.

Exactly. What really gets me angry are the people that imply that if you don't like NEWS you must not be a musician, or just don't "get it", or don't appriciate "real music", etc.

Right on the money... thumbs up!

Personally i love NEWS, its bold, interesting and at least continued a newish direction for him whilst he's in his funk / jazz phase. At the end of the day its just music, Prince does annoy me with.

- I like the album too, but it´s not bold (only East gets close). In this jazz-fusion field, Miles Davis made a much more bold and innovative album called ´Bitches Brew´ more than 30 years ago...

Okay News Isn't My favorite and Yes I'm still waiting every year for a new album... Like he used to do.

But NEWS Definately is a work of art and worth the Grammy Nomination, Lets see Mariah CArey come out with a LInstrumental Albu, OH wait she cant, Cause she has no Musical Talent but a Voice, or what about, Madonna, Oh yeah with out the hot producers, she's who? See just because Prince is a Musical Genius, It puts him under so much scrutiny. How bout the Person who wrote that Artical show us there musical side... ?/ Well It's probably because there are none... Prince is creating Music and is Growing as an artist... He's not 20 anymore... Gosh It's not like that Writer of that article wrote anything worth reading other then thier own personal views... But u know what the say Opinions are Like AzzHoles and Everybodys Got one.!!

Peace And love

King sausage, you keep saying that the CD is unessential. Unessential to who? All the people that like it purchased it and all that didn't like did'nt buy. It's not a mass quality release. Definately not intended for those people that don't like that kind of music. Is that fair to say? Would you at least admit that if you played the CD along with other jazz CD's and didn't say that prince was the writter of the songs that people would look at the CD alittle bit differently? And as far as p rince being washed up, In the last 12 months he released 4 CD's and last time I checked he sold out Japan, Australia, and now Hawaii. Bottom line is that I don't think that the CD is unessential at all, I just don't think that it will appeal to the masse s just like jazz or blues doesn't appeal to the masses. That doesn't make it unessential.

No, I believe the word I used was "inessential." lol

That's not the point. I don't doubt that there are very very few artists out there who are "more talented" than Prince. But that gives Prince EVEN LESS of an excuse to release such terribly inessential tripe as NEWS. And even less credibility to his cultish fans who try to delude themselves that NEWS is important to the world at large.

Kingsausage, I don't think that you are understanding what I'm saying. I understand that you don't like the Cd,or you don't put it at the top of your favorite prince CD list. It is not my favorite prince release nor is it my most disliked I'm just trying to say that for a professional writer to say that this CD is the least essential album of 2003 is crazy in my mind. You would have to at least admit that it is in the top 2 or 3 CD in the same musical catagory that was released this year. Yes I understand that a lot of people don't like jazz or fussion, and I understand that it doesn't have the deep prince lyrics, or the heavy prince guitar, but when you break it down to the bare bones and listen to the music can you still tell me that this album deserves to be put in this least essential list. I respect your opinion as we all have different opionions on different prince projects.Graffiti Bridge I personally hated all but 3 songs on that CD,There are alot of people out there that wuold disagree with but I just didn't feel that CD. Good for me that the 3 songs that I did like were kickass, but I didn't feel the CD as a whole.

Didn't last for long though seeing as how bitter and negative your next sentence was. I also noticed how you didn't answer my first question and had nothing else to say concerning my other comments.

Also, just out of curiousity... are you the same guy who wrote the article for the Onion? I think you're one of those people who had nothing but negative things to say about NEWS when it was released. And now that NEWS has been given credibility by its Grammny Nomination, you had to search the web to find something... anything to back up your non-eseential, totally irrelvant and meaningless point. You throw down a challenge, then when someone answers the challenge you come back with nothing but bitterness. You need a hug or something?

If you read the explanation on The Onion's site about what makes an album INESSENTIAL rather than BAD, you'll see that many people on this thread are being uncharacteristically dimwitted. The point isn't that it's necessarily a bad album, although I think it is shit.

The point is that it's totally, and laughably, inessential to the general public. Which is the truth! Especially for an artist as big as he once was, and as talented as he still is. NEWS is a joke.

It took me FOREVER to find the CD in stores. The public doesn't care.

---
It took you Forever to find it in the store because it is not on a major record label. You keep expecting to find Prince's independent output at the front of the record store
and loads of radio airplay. That is not going to happen.

You have got to have your head up your ass to keep going on and on about this. You and the Onion don't like news. Well guess what this is Prince Org not King

Excuse me one more COMMENT...

SingMia
was in a symphony for over 12 years... and wrote her first orchestra at age 8... in case U know the GENERAL PUBLIC... is called "idiots"... thanks... for the note..BUT... I know music... GODBLISS YA.
*o)

Big fucking deal. I don't care who SingMia is. At all. She could be the Queen of Siam for all I care. You may think that the GENERAL PUBLIC is "idiots" and that you "know music," whatever the fuck that means, but the fact of the matter is that the public at large does not give a shit about NEWS, thus making it horrible inessential. Tell SingMia she can sing about that...

---
It took you Forever to find it in the store because it is not on a major record label. You keep expecting to find Prince's independent output at the front of the record store
with loads of radio airplay and promotion. That is not going to happen. In addtion, who goes to the record store anymore. I found NEWS on Amazon.Com with no problem.

You have got to have your head up your ass to keep going on and on about this. You and the Onion don't like NEWS.
Big Fucking Deal !!!. Prince has probaly started on the next project and will pick up his Grammy and life will go. Why don't you move on with your life and stop ranting about a record that you believe to be unimportant.

By the way most of the record buying public is stupid. Look at the Top Ten CD's on Billboard.

- Well, TRC is a very good album. Specially after the ´Kirky J years´ we were needing something with more musicianship. It was a breath of fresh air. Prince´s playing was very good, Blackwell did a kick ass job, there were funky numbers like ´Family Name/Everlasting Now´ and 80s retro songs like ´Everywhere´and ´1+1+1=3´...what do you want more? Ok, it could be innovative, but this is something I am not expecting of Prince right now.

Out of curiosity, how many times have the main contributors to this thread listened to News .I'm not gonna make any criticism of News itself as I've only listened to it once .Maybe I'll listen to it again in the future and love it,maybe I won't,we'll see , but it didnt make a huuge impression on me from what I heard , though it did tickle me into listening to Madhouse "16" again ,which I enjoyed more.

Yeah, it reminded me of that record too, and the drum solo in the beginning of "East" reminded me of a drum solo that Sheila E did at an aftershow on the Lovesexy tour (Small Club, 1. track).

NEWS does nothing for me, but if some people dig it then... let'em dig it and screw the fact that it doesn't appeal to a mainstream audience.

EWSFLASH, "Dude." I don't give a fuck if you like it. Or if you don't. The fucking point is that NEWS i s inessential to the music world in 2003. Can you not grasp that? Prince is a washed-up cultish has been who releases small-time, low-budget, impossible-to-find shit releases to an ever-dwindling horde of semi-retarded yes men fanatics. Try arguing that N EWS is essential. That's what this is about. So far, none of you muppets can address that point. Just keep on bleating...get back in your flock...

ni[/quote]
See this is why I don't believe that NEWS is innessential. It has been nominated for a Grammy and has gotten some very good reviews (as well as bad but you can say that about anything can't you) I take it that you don't like this album and that is the beauty of music is that what hits my ears as beautiful might hit yours ears as bull shit! I don't see the need to start a holy war over it. Now me personally I love NEWS I think it is the most brilliant thing released this year by far and I feel it is very good. See when Prince starts a trend it does not mean someone before hasn't done it before it just that someone hasn't done it in a while (you know like fashion trends) a major artist releasing an instrumental album is a big deal. Ask yourself who else in music with Prince's stature (yes he still has stature if he completely fell off you would never hear his name spoken and there would be no need for this web site this discussion) would or could release an instrumental Seal no, Sting possibly but he won't, Lenny Kravitz it I doubt it. Of his contemporaries Prince is still the leader in my opinion.
Now for me I never did connect to TRC. I never faulted the album for this it had some good stuff and I recognized the quality but I just never connected. NEWS on the other hand was damn near a religeous experience for me. I think its influence and essentiality (I think I just coined a phrase) is very underestimated by you and several others on this site because it was nominated by an establishment (the Grammy's) that has ignored him for sometime and this is before the name change. So I think in time you will see NEWS is much bigger in terms of commerce and artistic influence than you are willing and or able to see now. That may or may not change your opinion of the CD you might like it you might still think that it sucks but I think time is on my side on this issue. Also I caution you to remember the Prince 2-3 years rule. Sometimes and I am sure you have experienced this with Prince a song or songs that you hate today you will love 2 or 3 years down the road you know its true.

Yeah, I'm really trying to understand his point too. With no where else to go with this argument, the argument to the naysayers becomes "WELL...THEN ALL THE MUSIC IN THE WORLD IS LAME!!!" So childish...

Have you considered that all six of those albums may be lame? There are hundreds of pop/rock/rap albums and the odds are that some of those will be good, but there is a fair chance that all 6 instrumentals might be pretty ordinary.

And why does the fact that this album is nominated and may win a grammy have to do with this album being good? Since when are the Grammys an indicator of good music? Ever heard of Milli Vanilli? Jeesh...rolleyes
