Not one single person has mentioned if Beck has performed that song LIVE. I'm very interested.

You know, singing falsetto, that a sign that you have a braod vocal range, on Sea Cringe, he only sang in a monotone, colorless voice, what's up?

Flying, when you listen to a studio album do you judge it by how it sounds live? Sgt. Pepper's wouldn't make a good 'live show' with 12 minute solos ala Prince but does that in any reduce the fact it's a masterwork?
As far as 'Sea Cringe', well I think your clever little joke speaks for itself.
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

I watched Beck perform that song on some late night talk show (forget which one, MTV VMAs?), he definitely sang live, and he killed it.

"Beck sucks". So does Meshell Ndegeocello, Lenny Kravitz, the Chili Peppers, Ben Harper, Bowie, etc. Yeah, right. If it doesn't groove you, cool, but being so obstinately critical about someone who really has the goods, just illustrates how narrow-minded too many of the people at this site are. One of the more incredible things about Prince's music has always been his amazing eclecticism, so to read people dogging someone like Beck who brings that same approach to the table, seems ridiculous. I don't know if Prince has an opinion about Beck, but if he does, I doubt that its that Beck "sucks".

And Luther Vandross rarely sings in falsetto and no one's ever accused him of having a limited vocal range. Sorry, he's not Prince, so he must "suck" too.

- Great point...I never heard Sinatra and Tony Bennett singing in falsetto too, does it mean they are bad?...and I think that these ´how many instruments does Beck play´ argument is not valid. It´s not a competition.

- Sorry...I know that the Beatles were innovative, and I am aware of their role in the history of popular music. But they werent known as virtuoso musicians. I never heard Sgt Pepper live, but i doubt that it would sound perfect live.

You dodo's didn't get what I said...

It's not if they sing falsetto that it means they are bad, NO. You're twisting my words around, either you're...d...or you're effing with me.

What I am saying is, that in one song, he sings a few falsetto songs, so apparently he can, then on the next album I don't hear it anymore. But there must be an ability to hit mid notes, the notes in between, but yet, I heard was monotone voice on Sea. You'd think that maybe he'd sing like that again. I know, Sea Cringe, is a "mellow" album, blah, blah, blah. Sooo, either he can sing in two modes, very HIGH and very monotone...what gives?

And still a TV performance that you're not sure where or what he performed is not good enough...has anyone heard him sing like that LIVE, just like on 'Debra'? That's all I want to know. That's all.

And hey, again you mf are putting words in me sentences...NO, Bowie rocks, now he's a freagin' GENIUS, Lenny...enh, Harpers got props, Tony's amazing, Meshell's super, Chili's are me homeboys, so, if you consider me one of the narrow minded ones on this "site", whatever.

To me it seems like people need new heroes to validate the music that they consider their own generations music, but unfortunatley, things have ran rather thin, so the word "Genius" get's thrown around a bit.

- I never said that about you. I see you base your posts on arguments, and it´s nice. But I see that there are several ´fams´ here that get insulted when someone from the new generation is called ´great´, ´genius´ or whatever, like if Prince was the only genius of the century. There are always those questions: ´Ah, but does he play several instruments?´, etc etc.
Personally, I dont think Beck is such a genius and I dont like his other albums. But I think he is an authentic songwriter, who seems to take music seriously, which is something very hard to see in the pop music scene of today.

Okay, I can give Beckster at least that, he's trying TRYING, to be different, doing his own thing, at least he holds a guitar now, which is cool. He is outside of that POP element, and again that's good.

But not a genius. Not super performer, that dancing he does...popping and twitching is kind of silly. He has no charisma in a way...he lacks superstar qualities which come very very rarely.

And you know, I actually feel bad for the "new generation". They have NOTHING. NOTHING. No one to stand behind or really place on a pedestal for REAL talent. No brave creative artist that does so much so well...it's sad. I think when they mature and look back, all they will have is Eminem, 50 cent, J-lo, The Strokes (which are a great band but we'll have to wait and see) and Chingy. What's up with that? Sheesh.

So GENIUS get's tossed around until it falls on someone who's not...it just makes the "new generation" feel better. Fine.

- I think the word GENIUS is too strong. It shouldnt be apllied to everyone who is only talented. Some people dont even consider Prince a genius...it´s something that will be only confirmed 100 years from now. I agree that the new generation doesnt have almost nothing.I mean nothing that was complete, only some talented artists here and there: Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine is a very good/innovative guitar player, although I dont love RATM´s music. Radiohead is very creative, but technically weak. Lenny Kravitz is cool, plays well, but isn´t innovative. Beck is fine, authentic but not so innovative or virtuoso. Kurt Cobain was a revolutionary and amazing songwriter, but not a great guitar player like Jimi Hendrix was.And the list goes on...I honestly hope things change.
