"America" on "Fame"

Prince's song "America" was used on the TV talent show, "Fame" last night to accompany the group of contestant's dance routine in celebration of the 4th of July! (which I thought was slightly amusing since some of the lyrics are rather more sarcastic than patriotic!) It was fun to watch! smile

Actually, according to the Rolling Stone interview in 86, Prince did intend for the song to be patriotic, not sarcastic.

Well, that's what Prince said in the interview. I believe his exact words were that he intended it to be "straightforwardly patriotic". It was in the Rolling Stone interview from 1985 or 86. Still, Prince has changed his views considerably since then, so if he were to play it live now it would probably be with a heavy dose of sarcasm.

I beg to differ. Prince was really scared of the "Reds" and totally into fascist capitalist politics in the 1980's. Ronnie talk to Russia for example. He's afraid of "Leftist Guerillas" and so on. Jimmy doesn't pledge allegence and now he's living on a mushroom cloud [paraphrase]. Considering songs like "Partyup" this seems hypocritical on Princes part, but I think it was just lack of formal training in the realms of political science. He bought the line of the time. He reflects it pretty well actually. It's kind of a time peice.
