Another report on Paisley Park show Another fine show at Paisley last night. Larry along with the Artist, Jerry & Cynthia, Morris, Estelle, a new singer named Kip, Kirk, Mike Scott, and occasionally Tina Graham took the stage in 2 the AM hour for a funked up set that was mostly about Larry and GCS...at least until the end. Larry played (in no particular order):
[pre:0deadbeef0] We've been waiting (somethin with the words "get down" in it...hmm...THAT narrows it down) ["Jungle Boogie"? - MWC] Free Thank You Just B My Lady Hair I Wanna Take You Higher Groove On Everyday People Eye'magettin The Jam Dance To The Music One In A Million You [/pre:0deadbeef0] Larry was energetic and having fun during his set. The Artist, presumably just being respectful to Larry, mostly played the back during his set. Except for an impassioned final verse on "Hair" and a too-short, funkier-than-dookie keyboard solo towards the end of, "The Jam", he stuck with just being an accompanist to Larry. The audience was into it and everyone was having fun. The Artist's set was much shorter but was well worth the wait. He started to shine as the loop for, "Love...Thy Will Be Done" started. Although, he never started THAT song. He favored "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child", instead. The vocals were extremely soulful and the guitar was fantastic. He tested out a new song, next. It was title track to his next cd, "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic". The audience had fun singing the chorus as he laid down the verses in his trademark falsetto. A complete version of, "Purple Rain" followed this and the guitar just kept getting better. I kept thinking he was going to cut the song short and just go into the guitar solo but I was pleasantly surprised with the FULL thing. It was the first time I'd seen him do it ALL and I wasn't disappointed. The guitar solos were AMAZING in it. However, that was just the tip of the iceberg. He closed the set with a beautiful instrumental jam that featured his guitar to the fore, throughout. The guitar was like that I've never heard from him. If I had to describe it, I would say it was like having "Just My Imagination" flashbacks from the '88 Trojan Horse gig! It was too divine and Santana was definitely in the house! I believe at the end of it he credited Larry Graham as the writer. I don't know what it was but I'd LOVE to own it! On that note, the DJ kicked in with the new master and it was time to dance. It was a fun night, although I wish the Artist would have done a full set. And what's up with the TOO DIM stagelights!?!?!?!? We wanna SEE somebody! It's funny how he can make up for it all with six strings and a piece of wood, though. | |
