Eleventh Philadelphia report

When I heard this was going to be a greatest hits tour, I honestly didn't expect to go see him. But, by way of a friend I got hold of two front row balcony box seats which were great. Philly's Academy of Music has three or four tiers and we were seated in the first and close to center. Amazing! It was nice to see every expression of Prince's face being that he was in a great mood all night. This was my forth Prince show and by far the best. Seeing Uptown live was almost as great as seeing him do 17Days at the Tower in 1997. (By the way, how come that show isn't listed in the archives? It was the Emancipation Celebration during the first week of January '97)

[Editor's note: If someone would send me (matt@prince.org) the date of the concert and any details they can provide, I'll add it. Thanks! - MWC]

Najee was actually a great addition in my opinion. And I think any true musician would think the same. One highlight for me which I havn't heard mentioned yet is when during the Come On encore he exited stage right, ran around behind the riser with a red towel behind his back imitating superman while running around to stage left! It was clear he was trying to get Geneva to see him but she was too busy shaking her thang. I didn't go to the after party at Brave New World but I work with a guy that did. He told me he stood a few feet away from Prince as he chilled in a chair next to Geneva and a Handicapped person. I assume this is the person he flew up from the Make a Wish Foundation. Also hanging around Prince was the girl it two pigtails and shredded bell bottoms that shook her ass on stage at the concert. The one he slapped his bass to as she had her back to him. Apparently she left the club with several of Prince's security people. Speculate as much as you want about what may of happened later that night. My friend also said that although Geneva and Prince were talking in the club it didn't seem to him like they had a romance going. He also said that Geneva is beautiful close up. Anyway, of course most of us would of loved to hear the entire Rave album live but last Saturday, as I heard all of the jams that I was into as I grew up, it made for a very sentimental experience.

Prince's career has been a series of peaks and valleys, and even when he's not being innovative, he knows how to make a crowd feel like they have seen a performance full of funky jams, great musicianship, honesty, humor, sex, love, a god. What else do we need or can ask for from a man and his band.
