Prince-references in Maceo Parker-concert

Maceo Parker made several Prince-references in his Berlin-concert last night. Not sure, whether this has been reported here, but Morris Hayes is Maceo's new keyboard player and did a very good job.

He was featured in several songs and during one solo, Maceo told him to play "some of the purple song" and he started playing the Purple Rain chords for a minute. Not many in the audience figured what he was playing, I'm afraid though.

Well, and in the "thank you"-part of the concert Maceo said "Give a big round of applause for Prince who is spreading love and harmony and ... [cant't remember the rest]. Prince is here tonight". Of course Prince's presence was just metaphorical (... although I looked out for him a couple of minutes, I have to admit... wink)

At the end of the concert, during "pass the peas" Maceo's son Corey Parker, who's an excellent rapper, rapped two or three verses of "Baby I'm a Star".

So it was quite a Prince'ly night in the Traenenpalast (location of ONA-afterparty last october).

yes, morris is in the band at least for the tour. at first I wouldn't believe my eyes. the concert was nice and a solo by morris was one of the evenings highlights.

although I enjoyed the concert very much, three and a half hours of music, I have to admit that I was amazed how much better princes band was last october in berlin. the difference was almost frightening although the musicians on stage were great.

I just saw Maceo in Paris tonight at the Elsyee Montmatre.
The show was incredible, definately elevated by the presence of Morris Hayes... although as usual the whole band was great, the horns fantastic punching their way through the parts, Skeet on bass is untouchable in my book I can't think of many from any band I rate higher...and Morris just fitted right in, seems now Maceo has people in the band from all the parts of his musical life/collaborations James Brown , George Clinton and now Prince, can't wait for the Brussels show next month...
I've seen Maceo many times , in Paris and Brussels and have to say this was one of the best... perhaps it's the mood of the moment, the French seem serious right now, less noisey more listening... when Maceo said his usual heartfelt "we love you and we are about peace and love" the crowd erupted but not in a frenzied kind of way it was as if it was a chance to lift their/ our voices in agreement.
I spoke to a couple of crew and band people who said the Berlin show was not great sound wise and that they had equipment problems so maybe this was part of the issue in berlin, of course Prince has state of the art stuff and that always makes his sound quality very good.
I find it strange sometimes that people want to compare Prince and Maceo's shows... they are different in so many respects, they are different artists... and Maceo is very much a touchable person who is like one of us, whereas Prince has always been that rather enigmatic persona who even with his soundchecks and music club still retains a distance from us the audience, but that is perhaps as it should be and as they say here in France Vive La Difference...!
I think diversity is a good thing...

Hi Dima,

I love diversity and I think it is a gift and our chance to survive on this planet.

I know how different Maceos and Princes personality and music are but since my last concert I attended was the Prince concert in October and the afterparty in the Tränenpalast it automatically happened. On last years celebration Maceos and Princes band played the opening act. There I did make the same observation. Princes set just felt more consistent.

Peace

Maceo referred to the prince fans who were in the Madrid concert. Morris Hayes was very nice to all of us. He's cool, he was one of the key entertainers on stage..

The band performed Babyknows and Corey rapped on Pretty Man lyrics.

It was great to see Greg in the band again.

The show was fantastic.

For all of you who'll be missing Morris Hayes you'll find a great keyboard player in Will Boulware. Morris Hayes was temporary playing in Maceo's band as Will B. was in New York recording his own music.

And quoting 7thposition Will B. sure plays happy. He's a very nice and polite man who's always available for a talk after the concerts.

I did miss him in Madrid last march though Morris Hayes was a nice surprise for all of us.
