Just as a side note though, do u know if (or if u could ask) Per Nilsen will do a follow up to DMSR '88 - 2k3? HELLO? Did you not just read Mr. Hahn's statement? He not only said Per was an invauable source and advice for the book, but the picks up where DMSR left off. Please read before you post.

How do u think Prince feels about this? Does he support it? GENIUS question. Has Prince EVER supported ANY book written about him? Um...let me help you. NO.

Well, I've seen few comments directly attacking Alex Hahn, and most of them have been about his explanation of his title, and not the book itself, which of course we will have to read. Let's just say that I have as many reasons to feel apprehensive about his conclusions as you would if Prince announced an album called One Jam Man... Personally, I would have loved a biography that has nothing to do with Uptown, Per and company. Just so we get a POV outside of that illustrious group.

- I dont think Rainbow Children was THAT masterpiece, specially if you compare it to SOTT. BUT it was great musically, with some real great arrangements. Remember that Prince gave us 5 years of Kirky J and shitty plastic beats, so listening to TRC was a breath of fresh air. Of course I am waiting for his next album. I always dreamed that Prince incorporated more jazz into his music, because jazz is a style so rich that opens new possibilities. I admit I am afraid that he starts recording ´smooth jazz´ albums, like Sting does. Let´s wait and see. I think the man is talented enough to bring us some surprises.

But unlike Sting, there's a very significant "biographical context" for Prince renewed interest in jazz. That doesn't make his jazzy eccursions worthy on this single basis, but at least the author can view them as something more than simple borrowing from a man who has run out of ideas. [This message was edited Thu Jan 16 5:34:15 PST 2003 by Aerogram] - yeah, Aero...what i tried to mean is...that I loved when he incorporated jazz into his music, like he did on ´Come - album version´ or the end of ´Billy Jack Bitch´ (one of the best Prince things ever IMO - courtesy of Michael B Nelson of Hornheadz and P). But I must confess I was a little worried when I heard some pieces of the ONA tour. Some extended jazzy jams and ballads with acoustic bass are nice, but they were played in a standard way, like guys like Sting do. I am glad Prince didnt lose his edge, specially when I listened to some wonderful renditions of ´WHole lotta love´, ´Joy in repetition´ etc. Jazz is a wonderful style of music. I think every musician should learn how to play it, because it´s so complex. I hope he keeps on incorporating more elements into his music.

And he seems to be fair and bases his book on in-depth interviews on non-biased help from the great Per Nilson. But we shit down his throat because he doesn't think the lousy Rainbow Chitlin album is some masterpiece. We all know that disk is cocktail jazz bullshit that doesn't compare to the brilliance of SOTT or Lovesexy. Hahn is just honest to admit it. And his critique of Princes self-righteousness is right on as well. Prince and his shitty JW beliefs have made Prince into a raving lunatic. (Remember the "Satans Claws" poem?) Hahn is right to critisize someone who used to talk about freedom and liberal thought. Also his dumb views about not cursing and his desire to not play risque songs from his past, show just how much of a stick in the mud he has become.
Hahn, I am with you man. I will buy a hundred copies of your book, pass them around to other disgruntled Prince fams and he will beat Prince down with them. Yea, his live album is great, but endless jamming on stage is really out. The man is turning into the Las Vegas lounge singer, as of late. Just as Pete Townsend or Michael Jackson deserve criticism, Prince deserves it as well; as long as it is fair and from good sources. this aint CJ folks; Hahn seems to be a fan, so let's give him some love and support. He sure respects you more than Prince does. And did I mention Prince is greedy? Dansa, you hush. --- "Yea, his live album is great, but endless jamming on stage is really out. The man is turning into the Las Vegas lounge singer, as of late. " Do you think about what you are going to type before you type it. I do not go to Prince concerts to hear the songs performed the exact way they sound on the record. The more jamming the better. If anything one of the things that is wrong with performers is that the use tapes and try to re-create some video on stage. That is fine if you are the Backstreet Boys but, for a kickass performer like Prince that would be insane. Mr. Hahn knew the type of reaction he was going to get when decided to title the book. We will all wait see what the book is like but, the title gives it that National Enquier feel.

The fact of the matter is that we live in a world where attention spans have been conditioned to be smaller than MJs last albulm sales. The author in question seems to come from a reasonable standpoint, but clearly either through his own, or his publishers need/desire to sell books about an artist who is no longer "commercially" successful, he has been obliged to confront in his choice off titles. Any fans of Prince's work should relax in the knowledge they enjoy his work and do not need others to comfirm their tastes, unless of course they do, in which case they should a) find another artist to be passsionate about or b) chill and have more confidence in their own opinions. If you like the music and the man, do not be afraid of negative points of view, and do not be surprised at critical comments! At the end of the day, I don’t consider myself a disgruntled fan. I’m simply someone who thinks a lot about Prince and the fascinating musical and personal journey he’s been on for the past several decades.
Past several decades??? We all love Prince, but come on, let's try and get the time-line at least somewhat correct. mark d.a.

Wonder if Prince has had any say so in the making of this book? You can bet your sweet that this will not be ignored if he hasn't been consulted instead of insulted. True, Prince is and will be ahead of his time, but... is there nothing sacred like some privacey in a persons life. Yeah, we all have skeletons in the closet and then we move on. I know, it -should be about the Music- but when you have so many wannnaBe flying around every corner, what can a like Prince do but continue and try to be happy with Mani.
