Prince and The NPG Music Club......New 9 track Downloadable album entitled, " XPECTATION."

[Thanks, tuztones, for sending in this update/mini-review--sorry the org was down when it first happened! -Ben]
At one minute after the strike of midnight on New Years Day, Prince and the NPG Music Club gave all of it's members a tremendous surprise! Yes, it was a 9 track downloadable album entitled, "XPECTATION," which was sent exclusively by e-mail!
WOW! I was so thrilled and shocked at the same time! When I went to check my e-mail, I found this little notice with no sub-headline attached from the NPG Music Club. I figured at first that it was that renewal notice that everyone was waiting for, so we could join the 2003 year, but wait it was the new release by Prince!
It is a 9 song jazz instumental album filled with amazing performances! It features, Candy Dulfer on Saxaphone, Mr. John Blackwell on the drums, Rhonda Smith on the bass, and introducing Violinist Vanessa Mae, and of course Prince on Keyboards and guitar.
The headline on the download page for this new release says
The NPG Music Club presents:
"XPECTATION"
New Directions In Music From PRINCE
There are no vocals on this new album! It is a complete 40+minute instrumental jazz release done Prince's way! It reminds me of something a group called, " Return To Forever, " would do, but as I said Jazz done Prince style! All of the songs start with the letter X!
Here are the compositions:
1) "Xhalation"
2) "Xcogitate"
3) "Xemplify"
4) "Xpectation"
5) "Xotica"
6) "Xogenous"
7) "Xpand"
8) "Xosphere"
9) "Xpedition"
The shocker to this release was that Prince just released his 3 disc set, " One Nite Alone...Live."
According to some other fan-based websites of Prince, many of it's members have not been satisfied with their 2002 club membership and decided to contact the Better Business...well you know who! Many of the members felt that it was not fair paying $100 and not getting their money's worth! There were even reports that a lot of the members would not renew for the new year because of the lack of music on the site! With this new release, Prince sure gave it's fans something in their collection that will be cherished for many many years to come!
It is not hard to see why Prince used John Blackwell for this project! His playing is flawless as so is every other accomplished musician on this album! There are a few songs in this package where Prince really shines with his guitar! I am not going to tell you where, but just take a full listen to this new masterpiece! Once again Prince shows pure genious and explores Jazz as he can! A+++!!!

(update:)
This is starting to look like a new beginning for the 2003 NPG Music Club Year and it's members have not even been notified of the renewal issue as of yet either! ( I am sure it will be coming!)
There is even an additional download that have been made available as of late Friday nite! The song, "Empty Room," has been made available only by e-mail so far to the club members! It is a live version from one of the souncheck's that Prince and the NPG did right before a show! I am told that it will only be available for a very limited time!

The album is excellent... the guitar parts are great but a little scarce. Could have done with more of the jazzy guitar solos and a bit less organ!

Empty Room is really good. As far as Xpectation goes, it's seems that there are enough X's in the world right now to last a life_time. Everything from X-mas to VinDesiel movies is about being "Xtreme" and it's getting a little Xtranious. I wish I could say that this album was Xelent like many of the people on here, but I found it Xtremely boring. Prince watched way too many XXX porno movies for his own good and the good of what he considers "Jazz". As far as I can tell "Madhouse 33" would have been a better title, and either way it is becoming more and more evident that Prince has lost any idea of what he does well, or even what "art", "good music", "talent", or "interesting" mean. It's starting to become Xtremely taXing if you aX me.

Is this true?

I've been checking NPGMC and all I see is the retail section up there now.

I am a club member (joined in December) but have not once been able to log in to their site (because they took it down within a half hour of me joining the club!).

The "album" is all instrumental. It's alright. The Empty Room live track is great. He gave that otherwise crappy little song some life by doing it live. I had a similar version that I downed off the Seduction 747 with video. I love that little video with Mayte in it looking so fine. And Prince looking so sad. "Love is strong, however long, but shoulda been 4ever..." Nice.

I love belonging to the NPGMC. Anyone complaining to the BBB should be ashamed. The club has provided everything it ever promised.

Long live the New Power Generation! That $100 is burning a hole in my pocket too, I'm ready to give it up for 2003. Happy New Year yall.

Well we will see, I for one will take a wait and see approach. To me Prince and NPGMC have played too many games in the past as well as sending cryptic responses to legit questions that I and other NPGMC members have posed. However if NPGMC has turned over a new leaf with the new year then count me in. As the old saying goes: "It takes many acts of kindness to make a friend, but it only takes one selfish act to loose them".
My DC Direct wishlist: 1) Bane, 2) Prof Zoom, 3) Superman Blue, 4) Kilowag, 5) Parasite

Thank God for downloads. You guys complaining about the downloads should get a faster connection. It's not THAT expensive. Waiting for cds that may or may not arrive is a pain in the ass. Year 1 of the NPGMC gave us nearly 15 hours of stuff, and the Ahdio Shows were awesome. I for one hope that if and when there is year 3, it'll be downloaded.

i must say i'm ready to join 4 another year! i admit, i only joined last year after it was confirmed he was coming 2 buffalo and it was by far the best money i spent last year. not only did i see the soundcheck, show and afterparty(which i thought was better than the aftershow included in the box set) in buffalo, but proceeded 2 toronto for more front row seats, a soundcheck, and another phenomenal, and at times unique, concert performance. i sang back-up at the soundcheck in buffalo just feet away from the man himself, and shook his hand afterward! then i get the ona acoustic cd, i guess most of this was downloadable the previous year, but it was new to me and i loved it! finally the box set, yes, i like many others thought we would receive something more along the lines of what was outlined in the tourbook, but the fact remains we would have spent money on this anyway, and to this date i have yet 2 see it in stores. at this point, i was satisfied with my membership, but really felt what others were saying about thier xperiences and was not sure i would b renewing, again, unless a confirmed show came my way again later in the year, or the possibility of going 2 the celebration(another perk from last year i had 2 pass on) inclined me 2 do so. it was 2 my gr8 surprise then, when i got the email new years eve, and then an albums worth of new music! a few days later, empty room, a song i've only been lucky enough hear on a crappy bootleg up 2 this point...AWESOME! and now i see 4 more downloads above??? i did not get these (yet) but hope the gifts keep coming...if they r buttering us up b4 sending out renewal notices, it's definitely working!

The downloads are nice, but I really think that the product is so lacking that I can't see myself joining next year. Maybe after Prince gets some therapy. It just feels really dead and over to me. Listening to the live album was like clowning. It was pathetic versions of songs I own better versions of (versions that don't include sermons about swearing words and dead blood). It was sad. It's probably me, but I used to love Prince because he was so positive. His energy seemed boundless and beautiful, his understanding seemed to be the same. He was like this little angel that would run around in flashy clothes, make beautiful songs, and tell us to "live 4 love" "love one another" "love God" "Love Life" "Lovesexy". This new Prince is angry and egotistical, he tells people how to behave and thinks he's being funny when he judges and talks down to his fans. Until 1989 there was never a bad song on a record and after that there were only a few. Now he can't even turn out more than 2 records in a year, one that's mediocre (at best) piano music; the other is structureless muzak/porno-jazz. I don't get it. I don't know what happened to this guy. It's like he went from being Paris to being Trenton, NJ. He went from loving life to loving himself and his opinion. He went from being meek and talented to being egotistical and unable to write. Where did it all go wrong?

Is the NPGMC worth your $$ next year? Maybe. Is it worth mine? No. I'll stalk up on Weather Report and Parliment. That's all I have to say about that.

I think it is you with the issues and not Prince. The live recording is great. I could do with a little less Rainbow Children material but, at some point he has to perform the new material. He just cannot keep doing the same show over and over again.
Please tell me where on the cd you hear these comments. "include sermons about swearing words and dead blood" I do not hear any sermons or comments about dead blood.

At the beginning of "JIR" he changes the lyrics to "four letter words will not be heard up on this stage tonight" which really detracts from the cool poetic aspect of the original line, and indicates a judgement of those who would not follow suit. (not to mention that it doesn't make sense because the sentance itself contains the words "four""will" and "this" which are all four letter words, but that's pointless...)

There's a part on Disc One where he says "Leave that blood alone! Don't you know dead blood kills interferons!" or something along those lines. Again, these things are not promotions of peace, they are judgements of those who don't believe the same way he does. I find that to be sad. It's only my oppinion.

Thanks for asking instead of telling me that I was wrong.

Not only is judgement of art subjective, but the opinion of one person does not pass the law about quality. What was the last non-Prince Jazz record you listened to? What is your definition of Masterpeice? of Fusion? of Jazz? Don't answer. Just think. Don't judge my opinion. If you like the record enjoy it, don't give an objective and expect acceptance.

It looks like Xenophobia has been morphed into Xpectation.

I assume he dumped Xenophobia from the album as it has been released on the box set.

I'm downloading right now so we'll see what it's like shortly.

I guess the "Copenhagen", "Osaka", etc. links went to different countries.
So far, looks like USA got nothing. Wonder if there are more surprises coming up...

As an NPG club member for 2 years I am also very unhappy with 2002. First of all I have yet to receive my "One Nite Alone" CD. I have sent 11 emails to NPG and they tell me that has nothing to do with them. They say I need to contact npg@gage.com. Well... npg@gage.com doesn't reply! Has anyone else had this problem? I'm also very annoyed that for $100 a year the NPG website has been down for as long as it has. I am a huge Prince fan, but where's the goods? Oh yes, just in time to renew our memberships he just happens emails us new songs to download. MMM perfect timing Anyone else agree?

I also have not received this e-mail with links to these new downloads, in fact I had to get the links from elsewhere. This annoys me, because whats the point of being a member if instead of receiving the info from the official site its coming from somewhere else. this is not the first time this has happened to me either.
I also never received my ONA piano cd, it was returned to them and then they said that it would be going out with the next cd, well I received the box set with the EXTRA ONA cd in it which if I remember was given to us to pass on to a friend but never received my first one. I contacted them to which their response was that I had received 4 cds as promised by the club, so whilst some members received an extra copy of ONA I didn't.
Apart from that yes I thought the box set was very good, and yes its nice to have received Xpectation and these new downloads, its just that overall if things are going to work they really have to make sure that every member is receiving everything available and that they are notified.I have been a member since day one and overall I am happy with the club, so yes I will be joining this year.
