New York Times ONA Live Review PRINCE AND THE NEW POWER GENERATION: `ONE NITE ALONE LIVE!' (NPG Records, four CD's, $59.98
by BEN RATLIFF New York Times Prince's 2002 concerts were touted as no-nonsense musical affairs, without the choreography and erotic routines of his big-arena shows. It's a contrived selling point: it doesn't get much more musical than Prince dancing. But this set offers the pleasures of hearing the master stretching out, playing jazz guitar interludes, calling arrangements on the fly. He's a Jehovah's Witness now, so there are historical and biblical tangents and moralistic asides: during a luscious "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore," he purrs to an audience member, "Miss: I just want to say crack kills." Also included: a wilder after-hours live set, and a solo-piano and vocals disc, recently recorded in the studio.

It is SO SAD that those two line cutters who weren’t even NPGMC members got into the front row in Portland and on the ONA Live CDs FOUR TIMES!!! (Blue sparkle dress woman gets to say her name on “Family Name”, Prince changes it to “Outlaw”, you can hear Blue sparkle dress woman’s friend howling out during “How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore," Prince is annoyed by her too and says , "Miss: I just want to say crack kills!” Anyone who was up front at the Portland show will remember how things went down!. It's true that these reviews don't really seem like reviews at all. They've all been positive, but not nearly as indepth as Brendan's, as I've said before.
It is nice to see (or not see) a couple of things in these commentaries of ONA Live! One, no mention of record sales, past or present. Two, no comparision to Purple Rain. Maybe Prince's brilliance caught these reviewers off guard. They've tried so hard and for so long to box him into one or two categories or write him off altogether and clearly this box set shows, you just can't do it.
