Prince, "One Nite Alone . . . Live" (NPG, three CDs, $50)

This hugely rewarding set captures the brilliance, indulgence and frustration of a Prince concert -- and the after-show. Luckily, you can listen to this stuff on your time, not on Prince's nocturnal schedule. "I'm not interested in what you know," he tells the audience, saying he won't play "Purple Rain" hits, "but what you're willing to learn." On disc one, he challenges with jazzy explorations from last year's "Rainbow Children" CD. Disc two starts with social commentary about surnames and then heads into familiar territory with "Raspberry Beret," "Do Me, Baby" and "Nothing Compares 2 U." The after-party is a superfunky jam. Along the way there's Princely philosophizing and pronouncements ("I'm talkin' about the theocratic order"). This is about musicianship and spirit of the highest order. -- Jon Bream, Star Tribune

I am going to pick the set up TODAY after work and I am going to wrap it up and put it under the x-mas tree for myself. It is going to be HARD not to tear it open my fellow fams, but it will definitely make for a guaranteed good X-mas.

Why there's no "I love u but don’t trust you" on this set is beyond me, did you guys here that performance on the Chicago ONA, that was smooth

Another thing, even though this is off the ONA subject, why didn’t Prince ever do anything with that song grand progression? Now that was a good song.
