Sorry to bust your bubble ComptrBlu, but I didn't take my cue from Prince on this. This is old news to some of us but it's still in need of telling to set the record as straight as possible. So I'm glad Prince told/is telling truth on the matter of Lincoln.
The song is based on a direct quote from Lincoln, himself.

September 1858-"I will say then, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races; that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people. . . . And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race." -- Yes, that is a direct quote from Abe himself. Sound familiar? This is not "Prince B.S.''. He turned Lincoln's own words into a song. And he flashed on the screen during the concert tour.

Doesn't sound like the "hero'' he is so strongly made out to be in our history books and classrooms. The truth is much uglier than that.

I might as well judge Prince by the shittiest song he's ever done and debate with you guys that Prince sux because of it. Oh the outrage that would create here. But it's OK if Prince makes blanket statements about people.

That's the best comparison you could come up with? Man that's lame.

Let's try this again shall we?

I don't question what Lincoln said..yes he did say that. But to sum up the man's feelings based on that one quote ignores anything else he may have said on the subject. Which either implies Prince (and everyone else who wants to point to that quote) doesn't KNOW what else Lincoln said on the subject..or doesn't care. In Prince's case I figure he doesn't know any better. He read a book (and we know which book because he mentions the book in the concert program); and decided he had to write a song about it. I might as well judge Prince by the shittiest song he's ever done and debate with you guys that Prince sux because of it. Oh the outrage that would create here. But it's OK if Prince makes blanket statements about people.

Anyway sorry I even brought this subject up took this topic down this road. No point arguing against Prince here. Back to the music. Even if I do think he should be playing something else that nite. Of course this is the same guy who, when he showed up on Letterman, decided to play "Dolphin"!!! Ugghh

Sorry you don't feel we can discuss this, CmputrBlu. I think we have an honest disagreement. No need to blame "Princemania'' for it. As I said, many, including myself, have come upon this information and this viewpoint long before The Purple One put it to song.
The point is not only that Lincoln said some conflicting things about race, but that it's taught to us that he was practically a saintly man when it came to race.
When the prevailing teaching on the man is flawed, then you must focus on what's not being said in order to set the record straight - hence a song about Lincoln's racism taken directly from his quotes (which you won't find in many school history books).
No matter how you slice it or what happened, he viewed whites as superior. That's what is lost in Abe-worship that is an insult to blacks if ignored.
And, OMG, I can't believe you dissed the Letterman appearance where he did Dolphin! Oh, I'll have to leave that one alone for now. smile
Lastly, this discussion thread is really on "The Everlasting Now'' so I'll end it on that note -- Prince will tear that up, too!

Peace

As for my soul not getting it..well what my soul doesn't "get" is what he believes in. Which at the end of the day is no more the truth then what other religions in the world believe in. One can be spiritual without ramming ones specific beliefs down people's throats. There's a big difference from preaching that God is love (the old Prince) and God is what the JWs believe in (the new Prince)

yes... the new message is just ever so slightly more complex, isn't it? enough to foil most fans, not to mention people in general. "God is love" is probably about as far as their spiritual comprehension can go... right?!?

too bad this is a free country.

1) You assume that everyone who hears it will be recording it to videotape...

2) You assume that everyone who hears it will have the means to transfer the audio from the tape into digital form...

3) You assume that everyone who hears it will have a CD burner...

4) You assume that everyone who hears it and wants it won't want to hear even more stuff like it...

5) You assume that everyone who hears it won't want a crisp, clean, perfect version of it, produced and mastered to perfection...

Considering the popularity of Napster & its many imitators, these are all safe assumptions!

Yeah, but it's been shown that those who use Napster and it's many imitators are more likely to buy CDs, not less...

...they are also more likely to have edit statements...

Well, I admit I was disappointed with his performance of ´The Work´ on last Leno. On the other hand, ´Ballad of DP´ was amazing. I still dont know why The Work sounded so bland compared even to the studio version(s).
´Everlasting Now´ is a very funky track on TRC. I know many people here dont like it much because of the ´religious´ lyrics, but musically speaking, it´s one of Prince´s funkiest tunes ever. Maybe the lyrics could prevent some potential fans to become fans, and it would be a shame. Maybe another song would be better in this regard. But I honestly hope he doesnt perform ´Take me with U / Raspberry´ or ´Purple Rain´ there. smile

I agree with you completely. And you know, it's not really about getting more fans so much as it may bring back some old diehard fans who may have given up on him after Emancipation and haven't heard anything he's done since '96. Leno would be a perfect way to spotlight the best of what he's done lately...but IMO, the Everlasting Now is just a bit too religious and definitely not his best song of late. 1+1+1is3 would have been a perfect song for Leno. Oh well.

I think the attitude of 2freaky4church1 is a bit worrying! A bit obsessive! You can't really believe that much in Prince as a live performer! You haven't even seen the performance yet!

I just wish it could be similar to his last visit to the Tonight Show. Man was that a good one. {sigh} I'll just keep my fingers crossed and pray that it gets funky up in there!
