Bass Player reader reactions to Prince interview This is how Bass Player readers responded to the Prince article.
(http://www.prince.org/news/display.html?1674) (http://www.prince.org/news/display.html?1853) *While The Artist is indeed a musical genius, it does not extend to his bass playing. The term "genius" means inventive, and The Artist's playing is extremely derivative-by his own admission. And he gave your Senior Editor a runaround I felt embarrassed to read about.* *I tried really hard to find something informative in the Prince interview. I learned nothing about playing technique, music theory, equipment, or recording. In fact, I learned nothing except how a pampered pop star hates being quoted out of context. The article wasn't even particularly entertaining. Was it really worth a cover story?* *The Artist interview was very different from the usual gear-centric article--and for that reason I was pleased with it. The Artist is a unique figure in music, and standard story would not have done him justice. I'm always pleased when the writing in a specialty publication reaches a new or different level, going beyond the obvious topics such as "What strings do you use?" or "How fast is that fastball?" Mr. Coryat did a fine job in this regard, and I commend him.* *I've always appreciated Bass Player's ability to cover more than just one side of bass playing. This issue was no exception--a very informative look at what Jeff Berlin is doing at Players School, and a cover story on a flake! It was a good interview, and it shows Prince (or whatever) in his true light: someone who wears women's underwear onstage and doesn't like being tape-recorded. This isn't genius--it's silliness with a lot of money. I'll stick to listening to and being taught by Jeff, whom I suspect does not wear women's underwear when he plays.* *Thanks for the article on The Artist. I now know to stay as far away as possible from any and all of his musical efforts.* *That article had to be the strangest BP interview since Gene Simmons. Thanks for an interesting read.* *What will we get next? "Sheryl Crow---Unsung Bass Legend"?* | |
