Run DMC DJ Jam Master Jay Killed

Just read on Yahoo! news that Jam Master Jay was shot and killed in NYC last night... excerpt follows...

By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Jam Master Jay, part of the pioneering rap trio Run DMC, was shot and killed at a New York City recording studio Wednesday, the group's publicist said.

Publicist Tracy Miller confirmed the death of the 37-year-old disc jockey, whose real name was Jason Mizell.

He was shot once in the head and was dead at the scene, said Detective Robert Price, a police spokesman. He said the shooter remained at large and police had no information on a motive.

A second man, identified by police as 25-year-old Urieco Rincon, was shot in the leg and was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital. The hospital did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Run DMC is widely credited with helping bring hip-hop into music's mainstream, including the group's smash collaboration with Aerosmith (news - web sites) on the 1980s standard "Walk This Way."

"We always knew rap was for everyone," Mizell said in a 2001 interview with MTV. "Anyone could rap over all kinds of music."

"It wasn't the soulful R&B of the '70s and '80s," he said of the group's early work. "So we didn't want to be like the soft R&B. We wanted to go hardcore, so we put the rock-and-roll on our rap."

Mizell served as the group's disc jockey, providing background for singers Joseph Simmons, better known as DJ Run, and Darryl McDaniels, better known as DMC.

Before rap was about living the "thug life," beating up your bitches & smoking the bowl, these guys were about fun & innovative beats...

Gee, I wonder what Farrakhan has to say about this.

I show a little humanity for the people who haven been killed in Bali or in Moscow.
I do not burst into tears for every rap d.j. that has been shot since DJ Scott LaRock.

But don't get me wrong. I liked Run DMC, in particularly their early stuff.

i would just like 2 state 4 the record that Jam Master Jay was part of the reason that i am a DJ because when i first heard the album "Raising Hell" the whole rap music thing (music period really) made sense. so i would just like 2 say that if it weren't 4 Jay that i probobally wouldn't be a disc jockey 2day!!!as 4 the person that said it was off topic stfu & flipped off & 4 Jay & his fans heart tombstone R.I.P.Jason Mizell(a.k.a JAM MASTER JAY (1965-2002))

Jam Master Jay was that rarest of beasts. A DJ that was as important as the MCs. Run DMC were effectively a 3 man act and it will be interesting to see how the group can perform without Jay rocking the turntables.

A very sad day indeed.

As a very young teen growing up when Rap Music started to blow up, this news hit me as hard as any death would when it's SENSELESS!
Run-DMC, Sugar Hill Gang, GrandMaster & the Furious Five blew our minds and the industry with their clever rhymes and fresh ass musical cuts/scratches! I know some of you may say "all they did was use other music" or "just how difficult is it to sample music"...well these brothers back then gave us a sound that was New and Creative as hell...there was basically your crate of records, (if you were lucky) a basic drum machine, pen & paper, and skills flowing thru your finger tips!!

I'm not going to knock the rappers of today...but I will say this...They owe the groups mentioned above and a whole bunch of other "old school" rappers (a term I dislike a lot, I prefer "Founding Fathers") just OODLES of Gratitude!!! If it wasn't for them they wouldn't be where they are. This "is" a tragedy for his Family, The Group, and the Hip-Hop community...sad

And yes I shedded tears because even if I didn't know Jay personally, this man "IS" a part of my past!! Hearing a RunDMC record brings me such joyful memories like swearing I was a B-Girl hanging out with all the best breakdancers at school!!! Running down to the Wiz buying the 12" version of "King Of Rock" ... then running home to blast it on the stereo with my brothers leather blazer on and a brush as the mike!!! omg What!! You better fucking recognize!!! I still have my black/green/red RunDMC poster!!!

We better wake up to "ALL" the violence that is going on here in the states and all over the world! Everyone is really loosing their minds and taking innocent people out for their own personal agendas. I had a dream thet every person in the world carried guns and just took the law into their own hands. Tired of their children, family and friends getting snuffed out, abuse, raped of just being in the wrong place at the wrong time...As a single parent, this dream had me in a cold sweat!

I'm not rambling here folks...I'm just sharing what stirs inside my head when another killing of a person just seems to be sensless! Mans inhumanity 2 Man (GOD HELP US 4 we know not what we do)...and to the person who did it "DID IT MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON INSIDE???"

What goes around comes around...beleive that!

Hey, funkystuff.
I don't think Ben, one of the founders of prince.org, needed you to tell him this story was off topic. He seems like a pretty intelligent fellow.
It's a news story and clearly many Prince fans are saddened by Jay's murder.
And showing humanity doesn't mean bursting into tears. It CAN mean using some common sense.

Very sad indeed ! Very sad as well that over this horrible occasion orgers start to fight with each other.
But,whoever did make that insensitive remark earlier has a point. Some people here are just terribly moved and shocked and OMG... bucuz Jam Master Jay was famous.Wo cares about Bali or Moscow ( where are these places anyway?) when there are more important issues, like what Prince had for breakfast?
Cheers.

I've been wondering what, if anything, JMJ was involved in that (possibly) led to this horrific killing. Maybe it was just a random killing, but to me it sounds like it was a "hit", the way it was done execution-style while he was in a studio and "hits" ain't done for no reason, who knows. . . . this is just a shame regardless of the circumstances, fans that grew up on RUN DMC like myself are experiencing a terrible loss . . . . . . .RIP

This is truly sad. I grew up listening to their music and it wasn't until watching these shows on the history of hip-hop that I realized how much I liked Run-DMC. They made rap music that wasn't threatening, we could all have a good time listening to it. My prayers are with Jam Master Jay's family, Run and DMC and his friends. God Bless.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
