Prince In LIFE magazine's "Rock N Roll at 50"

In LIFE there is a whole issue dedicated to Rock N Rol of the last 50 years. Topping the list is

1. Elvis
2. The Beatles (YEAH!!!)
3. Bob Dylan
4. James Brown
5. Rolling Stones
6. Madonna
7. Stevie Wonder...

....now right there we got a problem! Madonna before Stevie??

To top it all off, U got Madonna pictured on the front cover with a guitar (!) right next 2 Hendrix, the god of guitar!!!! What a travesty...

{{{Anyway, Prince was at 50. Here's the caption to the picture (circa "Parade").

"He was one of the reigning rockers of the 1980's, and an entirely inventive performer:exotic attire, narcissistic sexual writhing, trenchant singing, creative songwriting and a furious approach to his instruments. His music at its best was beautifully crafted, moving easily from pop to psychedelic to funk. Things began to get wobbly in the 90's, about the same time he changed his name to that of an unpronouncable symbol."}}}

I am SO tired of them slamming his 90's work, OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND.... This is supposed to be a tribute, not "Let's bash Prince every chance we get." Sure, the 80's was the era that was best suitable for his style...but I dont think MJ has been so great in the 90's either (He by the way, was at #9 after Chuck Berry).

Anyway, HURRAH FOR PRINCE!!!

Any list that places Madonna ahead of Stevie Wonder is fucked up

and I agree about Prince in the 90s comment. He had number 1 hits throughout the 90s and no one wants to recognize because they did not sell as many copies as Purple Rain.

Aren't they talking about who we saw so much of in the last 50 years? If so that would put Madonna ahead...

Madonaa is one of the biggest stars ever...

And maybe they put her picture there because her last two albums have been exellent and she has been rumored to be trying very, very hard to get good at playing guitar. Not to mention she still has a thriving career.

You don't like them to bash Prince, but Madonna's ok...

Just some thoughts smile

They should fire their music critic. Thats fuc*ing sad. They dont have a clue.Prince was basically making SOUNDS in the 80's., not MUSIC. Sounds SELL, and unfortunately these days MUSIC don't. Prince makes music now.He belongs in the top 10, if not top 5. What a joke!

bah.
Every magazine has to compile lists. They know this will alyways give them some sort of sales. To even argue with whoever chose the list, or the list itself is pointless. It can be nothing more than an opinion. It isn't the definitive *anything* for *anybody*. It is essentially meaningless.

Do people seriously look at this list as some sort of authority or 'guide' to what's 'good'? I hope not.

Casual entertainment at best, if you want to call it that.

I'm sorry, I ain't trying to hate on Madonna but there's a whole lot of folk that go before her -- especially Stevie Wonder. Come on, now.

Elvis and the Beatles are exactly where they should be on this list, but Prince and Bruce Springsteen should both be top ten. Madonna, on the other hand, shouldn't even be on the list. She doesn't do "rock and roll." I mean, I can see that this list extends to funk and some folk-rock, but the bubble gum dance-pop that Madonna did just has nothing to do with rock at all
