'Shockadelica' is definitely the best one. Jesse broadened his sound a lot on this album. The first album is pretty good, but the fake horns start to get to me by the end. 'Every Shade Of Love' is the funkiest of the three, but it's a little one dimensional--maybe because he got rid of a lot of the supporting musicians when recording it.
Then there's 'Bare My Naked Soul' which is a pure rock album--no funk to be found on there.

Yeah gotta agree, Shockadelica contained his finest moments, although 'Every Shade Of Love' does have a few Minneapolis classics on there for sure ('I'm Just Wanting You' is the bomb!).
Steer clear of 'Bare My Naked Soul'. Soul-less with a capital S ! The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

I'd say "every shade of love".
Although I slightly prefer Shockadelica as a whole era thing, ESOL is better produced and more funky. For a start, it has "So Missunderstood", ESOL, and IM JUST WANTING YOU! And I didn't even get to the base line on love struck or the pop classic Stop look and listen! .

It really depends on your taste. The first one is pure mid 80's minneapolis sound. Can you help me may be his best song.
Shockadelica he moves more toward a pure funk sound Every shade of love he fuses the two previous albums plus he adds more guitar Bare my naked soul is my favorite. Its a straight forward rock album. Think Hendrix. I wish prince would do a straight forward rock album like this Jesse is "supposedly" working on an old school funk album

Thanks, Faris I say the revue. Baby, Baby, Baby...what's it going 2 b?

Jesse Johnson's Revue will always be my favorite...pure MPLS funk.
I dig that better than the Greatest Hits package. I...wanna b yo man baby...OH, OH, OH Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Jesses "Every shade" album definately! His vocals sound way better and clearer on this one! "Misunderstood" "Lovestruck" and "Baby Im the one" are classics!
I do like "I want my girl" (off his first album) alot though too and "Fool's paradise" which is a great B-side! Also the duet he did with Sly was off the hook ("Crazay") Anyone heard the 12" to "Baby let's kiss", that is slammin' for sure! Also "Jump for it" for the "White men can't jump" soundtrack is way cool too! Hey, Morris day solo was just as good in my opinion, hardly any love 4 him though so whats up with that!

I actually have this 12" on vinyl. It is good. It even has a "live" version of BLK, though I'm not sure if it's really live or not. But the best 12" song of all is "Drive Yo Cadillac" on the back of "Crazay" 12". On ESOL, what is wiht Jesse's "Get a Little satisfaction".... doesn't he become obsessed with that prhase?

You actually need to get the GH, it has some 12" versions and b-sides and a bonus track Vibe...then Shockadelica, JJ Revue, Every Shade of Love, Bare My Naked Soul (only if you are into funky rock...)

Jesse's solo stuff is alot better than Morris's. Morris's first album is pretty good, the second one is OK and Guaranteed is his new power soul.
Morris can rip it up on stage. No doubt thats his strength.

Drive Yo Cadillac is Jesse's finest moment IMO. I listen to it all the time. I actually bought the Crazay 12 inch when it came out back in 86 and when I discovered Drive Yo Cadillac on the B-side, I was blown away. Why it didn't make it on the Greatest Hits album I'll never understand. ~And even when I'm right, I'll be wrong...it's Automatic too.

I really like "Drive Yo Cadillac" also, but it can't be his finest moment because (if I remember correctly) there's no guitar solo! Jesse is known for his ax. His best song has to be one where he tears it up somewhat. When I think pure Jesse, I think maybe "Fool's Paradise."

Did Jesse write Drive Yo Cadillac or Prince? It sounds SOOOO prince like.
It is his best song though. Although it doesnt' make a lot of sense if you pay attention... is it his cadillac or his girls'???? The lyrics kidna change a lot. "sing it up y'all..... Good God...Unnh!"

I second that, if that's the one Charmin Michelle's on. That's my girrrrl.

Bare my Naked Soul - hands down! All of his albums are good but almost everyone else in the Mpls scene could have made those - Naked Soul is something that only Prince could have pulled off: a solid guitar virtuoso record in the tradition of Hendrix that will completely peel your cap back at the right volume! What we're all saying is that we can't agree which is Jesse's best and you should go buy all of his albums.

Jesse's first three albums were funky... Shockadelica being the most encompassing. The third disc was a nice grab bag of songs. The guitar parts were pretty awsome especially 'I'm Just Wanting You'. The first disc is awsome b/c it has 'Iwant My Girl' and 'Can You Help Me' on them, period!
BUT his most accomplished work is 'Bare My Naked Soul'. Let me simplify, if you like Lenny Kravitz and are impressed with serious guitar playing - this is it! It's stripped down, in a BIG way! I love this album. I have always wanted to know what Lenny or Prince thought of this album.

All of his earlier albums are cool. Shockadelica is good. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Or just get the 12" versions of She I cant resist, Baby Lets Kiss and Freeworld, and put them on a continual loop! .

If you can get them all, go for it. They're a little hard to find, with the exception of the greatest hits. My personal favorite, Shockadelica.

"I'm Just Wanting You" is a hit among everyone I know. Awesome song! Anyway, if you get just one album, get Jesse's Essential Collection -- it also has "Vibe" -- another great song not to be found on any album, plus some B-sides like "Free World"

Shockadelica is the bomb. .even by today's standards some of the percussion and dance grooves are fresh on the floor. I accidently left it on from the DJ's booth at a party in 90' and the floor was packed. Yep Yep Sly is on the 12" of Crazay...
