The Vanity 6 thread

I remember getting the Vanity 6 album as a Christmas present in late 1982.I was hooked immediately. The girls weren't the best singers, but their album is a classic. The lyrics are outrageous, the songs are fun,and the overall concept was original (three lingerie-wearing divas, bold and aggressive). What are your thoughts on Vanity 6?

It's a fun album, vocally it's crap, musically it's nice.
personally I prefer the Appolonia 6 album, which has even worse singeing, but some very nice music.

You gotta be kidding...lol...the Vanity 6 album is MILES ahead of that Apollonia 6 disaster.Neither Vanity or Apples could sing, but Vanity had more style and "coolness" than her rival, who sounded as if she was just filling a role.Besides that, the V6 album had better songs....the funky "Nasty Girl",the charming "Wet Dream",the electonic new wave tracks "Drive Me Wild" and "Make-Up",and the downright hilarious "If A Girl Answers(Don't Hang Up)".

Tell me why you prefer the A6 album.

ohoh. Both albums got a hit and something besides.
The hits are obvious, the fun thing about the Vanity album is If A Girl Answers, with Prince as the girlfriend; hilarious. Bit like Vibrator.
ANd the kewl thing about the Appolonia album is Ooh She She Wa Wa. "I got a shape like a bottle of co-co-coca-cola" is sublime, but what really is kewl is the beat and how it slows down mid-song. Awfully Wicked.
Almost Sticky Wicked.

The Vanity 6 album is definetly a must have if U're a fan of Prince. Like everyone says, she may not be the best singer in the world, but the music makes up 4 her lack of singing abilities.
"If a girl answers, don't hang up", in my opinion is actually a pretty cool, quirky track. I find myself sometimes just singing the chorus out loud 2 myself
"He's so dull", is a nice, bouncy, pop track. It definetly fits the time period of the 80's, I first heard the song in the Chevy Chase movie, "National Lampoons Vacation" and I immediately recognized Vanity's voice
"Nasty Girl", of course a typical Prince funk workout. Always will be a classic.
The rest of the album, I really didn't care 4 too much. Maybe I'll have 2 go back and listen 2 it again.

I like Vanity 6 especially "Drive Me Wild" very 80's cool new wave. Appolonia 6 has I think a classic jam- "A Million Miles, I Love You" It features Wendy and Lisa and Sheila E and has that classic Revolution sound. Listen to that bass, tambourine and there's a Sheila E drum solo in the middle. Anybody else like this one?

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the album (CD or vinyl). Warner has stopped the production of the CD! It is one of the few items that is still missing in my collection....

Vanity (aka, Denise K. Matthews) is supposed to have a book out this month (March, 2002) called "Blame It On Vanity". It's already listed on Amazon.com, but I can't find any reviews or anything on it yet. As much as I love Prince, I would love to hear her perspective of their relationship.

Vanity (aka Denise Matthews) hasn't released the book...cause she is still trying to find a publisher check out her site www.denisematthews.com there u will find pics and chapter 4 of her book on-line.

I liked Vanity 6...they were so cool and pioneers. I wished that Vanity was in Purple Rain cause she's a better actress than Apollonia IMO. She was also cool in The Last Dragon, Deadly Illusion (with Billy De Williams) and Da Vinci's War.

Are you referring to the ending of "He's So Dull",when we hear what sounds like a guy falling down the stairs? It sounds like he's saying "Glasses....I have glasses!".

I like it more because of its more mature musical ideas (I'm NOT talking about the lyrics, they're both horribly immature on both albums..).
There' some good playing, more organic sounding and there are some good jams.

Vanity is a lot of fun to listen to when you're in a sillyt mood, Appolonia I can listen to just to enjoy the music.

Actually, I burned both of them onto one CD and I usually listen to them both in a row anyway..

I see what you mean. The V6 album is,musically, more "cold and robotic",while the A6 album is more "organic".In fact,Side 2 of the A6 album is considered the "Acoustic Side",with Sheila E.,Wendy and Lisa playing on a few tracks.

I love the song "Blue Limousine".

I love both V6 and A6 albums....but the A6 album should've been called the "Brenda6" album, because she is featured on most of the tracks, like Blue Limousine (brilliant) A Million MIles I love U (even MORE brilliant) and Some Kind of Lover (incredibly brilliant)

ps: 3x2=6 is an incredible song that I've just discovered.

In the spring of 1983,Prince began working on a second Vanity 6 album. He recorded the tracks "Sex Shooter","Vibrator",and "G-Spot".There is another circulating track,an instrumental that was tentaively tilted "Wet Dream Cousin" because of its' resemblance to the first album's "Wet Dream".In addition,I've heard rumors about songs titled "The Moral Majority","I Need A Man",and a version of "Exta Lovable" with Vanity singing the lead vocals.

I like the Vanity 6 version of "Sex Shooter" much better than the released Apollonia 6 version.Vanity sounds much more convincing and this version sounds funkier.I love the ending, with Vanity instructing the whole state of New York(!) to "Count to 8,as soon as I get undressed,y'all clap your hands okay?" smile

GOTTA (L) Vanity 6 biggrin They were the first to incorporate alot of what "other" entertainers WORE, DID and acted liked like onstage. I wouldn't say they were great singers by anymeans. But who in the Prince Camp back in the day was. (With the exception of Jill, maybe) But Vanity definately had an edge on everybody back in the day.

I miss those days. (Yes...I like to dwell in the past, does that make me a bad person!!?) LOL
